The empty space in the Western part of the map is more questionable. The easy answer would be "planned content" that never came to fruition. If I had to guess it might have been the Asian-style Zann/Jin continent that the Zann fled from. The lore of the Zann is that they invaded Perisno because they were expelled from the Western continent by the Jin dynasty (The companion Shi Jin mentions this as part of his backstory.)
That's my best theory for the Western continents and it makes some sense considering the Aroulo are a strange Native American-style faction that seem unrelated to the elves despite being close to them on the map. It might just be that the map doesn't scale well, and maybe the devs canned the idea since it would make the Zann invasion stranger from a map standpoint.
Hakkon didn't want to settle too close to elven forests, RoTf people also tried to move away from the rest of the world by settling in the far end of their forest.
Islands are simply uninhabited, no-one needs those useless forests with their "tundras and taigas and bears, oh my!". Aroulo still have plenty of room on their own and other factions have more important things to do in their life than try and populate far-off islands.
The north-west of Tolrania is Lymbardian land and so is that castle (disputed territory, it currently belongs to Tolrania but the family that owns it has ties & agreement with Lymbard).
I think Lymbard would make a nice minor kingdom to act as a challenger to the Tolrania like the Geldar is to Elintor and would make a nice buffer zone between the Zann and Tolrania because in my experience Tolrania gets destroyed Every. Single. Game. Its hard enough to be surrounded on all sides getting their asses kicked then the Zann comes in like "Imma end this mans whole career" and Tolrania never makes it past day 200.
I just wanted to step in with that e.e I always found it odd with lots of empty space, maybe they should add the feature where you can build castles to the game. Falcon makes sense tho because their whole objective is to isolate themselves so they go off into the mountains with large forests to hide but Hakkon takes their land anyway ;)
Any thoughts on the Lymbard idea?
I think the County of Lymbard was made that way because I think they basically exist as lore filler as well as another step up from Bandits and Wandering Criminals to farm. As you can see Volheere raiders and Saccar raiders were the most easiest to farm early to mid game as they yield a lot of equipment and aurums when sold, but then we have the Lymbardians who drop even more expensive gear and sell for decent aurums. And then we have the Klymorians who are abundant in 50+ parties and their equipment is super good and sell for alot alongside when captured and sold. Dont mention the amount of exp they drop. These minor factions add as farms for players who want to level up themselves and their parties. A nice option would be as time goes on they could possibly form their own kingdom as with the Venetor Empire questline which I will not spoil on what happens. The Lymbards and Klymorians could have their own questlines that yield special rewards and or events. But as of right now they are good late game farm and are useful for distracting the Zann when they start consolidating
