Tips for adopting the Deserter Lifestyle?

I want to do a run based around building myself a mountain lair (With the Stoneborn) but when the quest finally shows up, it's so early that if I take in the deserter I get shredded by hussars. Is there any advice for how I can improve my chances of survival early-game while joining La Resistance?
