Hard to get many defensive turret slots.
I would guess that this is intentional in order to make using torpedoes more viable.

But from what I can tell there is no defensive turret controller in game. And outside of certain class modules upgrades or station defence modules, there doesn't seem to be any way to get defensive turret slots.

Meaning that to be able to use defensive turrets you need to use arbitrary turret subsystems, which are not only very expensive power wise. But are also disabled by a fair few class upgrades.

Again I am guessing that this is intended, but I wanted to check that I am not missing something. Especially considering that point defence lasers cost 2 slots each and point defence flak is 3 slots. And with class modules typically giving around 5 to 8 that means you would only be able to fit about 3 flak guns or 4 lasers with machine guns being 1 per slot.

Yes - that's exactly the intent. For a gameplay focued on fleets and roles this was critical.
We can create universal ships, but it's harder and specialized roles will always work better in their field.

Also correct, that setup should be enough to counter most torpedos and fighters by itself.
Which means, a dedicated Defender role can protect whole fleet, a Scout has a chance to survive, and other roles can sacrifice slots & energy for additional defense.

Ok good to know that my thought was correct. I just wanted to check just in case. In general I am guessing that flak is the best when you have low amounts of guns due to the longer range and AOE? Or would it be better to use the 1 slot machine guns for big ships?
