[WOTC] Covert Infiltration

Ambush missions and supply extractions got worse
In Covert Infiltration, ambush maps are WAY too large. They are also incredibly repetitive and a slogfest. There is no tactical decisionmaking and takes away from the fun part of the mod, which is the new geoscape and the event chains. Missions were tense at first having to navigate with a severely understrength squad but they got old fast.

It's not like ambush missions are particularly hard, just stealth through with civilian disguises or overwatch crawl since the only enemies you encounter (at least til midgame, since that's where I am at) are troopers. The biggest issue I have is that they are just flat out boring. Not only does the percentage seem to lie ("trivial" = 100%) but I avoid covert actions that feature them just because I do not enjoy these 15 minute ad breaks in my gameplay.

Finally, some missions types feel like a waste of electricity. Reinforcements should not drop every turn during supply crate extractions, this is a death sentence combined with crates disappearing every 1-2 turns, often 10-15 units between each other requiring a full dash. There's no tactical depth to this mission type, the only correct move is just to extract immediately. This leads to very unsatisfying gameplay. Alloy scarcity should not be balanced around obtaining 1 crate per supply extraction, this just wastes the entire setup of the mission.

Both these mission types culminate in repetitive gameplay, as both mission types have the one game plan, which is dodge around units with stealth, then the mission ends. Once I finish this campaign I doubt I will revisit CI again, despite the interesting geoscape changes, unless significant changes are made to these two mission types.

I can second everything stated above, I skipped every single raid or supply mission, because of the above mentioned design, and I fell so far behind.

I LOVE the idea of this mod, but the requirement of using Prototype Armory, and the difficulty in getting supplies has really put me off from it.

i like CI alot ,i dont mind the ambushes to much but i really dislike the crate missions tbh as well.
Im not sure it can be done but maybe make is so reinforcements come later on in the mission or when you got a certain number of crates?
as it is i really try to avoid extract missions whenever possible and been buying alloys of black market

Don't like the ambush missions very much, especially as agents are wounded afterwards even if the mission is flawless. Also it forces me to create Stealth Rangers, as those are best suited for these missions (apart from Reapers).
No problems with the supply raids though, I always bring a Reaper or Ranger and usually get at least half of the crates (unless a Chosen or a Mocx squad drops by). But yes, reinforcements could appear somewhat less often, but then perhaps somewhat stronger?

I am playing without "prototype armory" mod. Not necessary. Just wanted to inform you.

I don't think you're expected to get all of the crates most of the time. They actually increased the reward for that mission somewhat to compensate. I do still occasionally get all of them, but usually not. There are some maps where it's impossible unless someone has a grappling hook since the crates can be on a roof with no ladder.

I did tweak that mission slightly for my game though, restoring the original behavior where advent and the lost will just fight each other and completely ignore you until you break concealment. The counter to the first reinforcements also doesn't start til you break concealment with that change. So I can get myself into a more reasonable position to be at least close to in range of most or all of the crates before I break cover. Without that change the reinforcement counter starts as soon as the advent pods see either you OR the Lost which means you're usually only in range of the crates on one of the far edges of the map when the reinforcements start dropping in.

That said, I dislike the crate mission as well. I definitely prefer the raid the convoy mission. The crate missions without the lost I don't mind as much since I know the layout of that map and just have to clear out the starting advent plus reinforcements and maybe a chosen. A lot of times you can cheese that map by having your Reaper 1 shot 1 pod by himself with remote start while the rest of your team takes out a second pod on the same turn. So you can grab about 5-10 crates before the first reinforcements drop.

In the XComMissions.ini this last line is commented out normally. Just remove the semicolon in front of it and that will change it back to the vanilla behavior.

Interesting... Thanks for the info.

I guess this discussion never got traction with the mod team since its over a year old and no changes have been made. It's disappointing, because the ambush and crate missions are poorly designed as the other folks said. I will try messing with the ini files. I'd like to see the ambush missions be at least be a random mix of the new and the old mission type. The standard crate missions pretty bad too, but these are even worse.

So I would love to hear other people's input, as this mod seems to be popular, but I personally love the new ambush and supply raid missions. However, I also really like the concealment mechanics and enjoy playing with them and use classes that tend to favor those playstyles. CI, as a whole, aims to force you to feel more like a guerrilla operation, scavenging for leads and such, and along with Diverse Aliens By Force Level, some AI and additional enemy mods, it really feels like I'm frequently heavily outnumbered and hilariously outgunned. Stealth is my main go to and having units that can re-conceal at will is basically a must (as a side note, I also use Rusty's Smoke Grants Concealment mod and likely many more mods to improve my sneak utilities). So for me, this has been a wonderful overall experience but I know the concealment mechanics are probably not everyone's favorite part of XCOM 2.

I agree with everyone who has spoken. The mission to gather supplies in the city, which often drops out at the beginning of the game due to the reinforcements arriving every turn, is completely impossible, especially on the legendary difficulty level. How can I make reinforcements appear at least after 1-2 turns?
Anakameron Dec 28, 2022 @ 7:08pm
Simple True Concealment *might* if the reinforcements are tied to breaking concealment.
Uncomment this line in XComMission.ini if you're using yellow alert and turn off AI to AI activations in that mod.

Otherwise, just stealth as many as possible with a Reaper, idk, I really enjoy that gameplay but I understand why many people who picked up this game wouldn't want to play the tactical missions as stealth missions.
M0NSTER Mar 11, 2023 @ 6:41am
Would be nice if the reinforcements are at least capped in the supply crate missions. Getting pods dropped every turn makes it near impossible in the later force levels

Echo everything said above. Infinite reinforcements is just a bad mechanic full stop - particularly when combined with any other mod that makes the game even marginally more difficult, as the effect just snowballs - but combine it with it being every turn and the timer starting immediately when Lost are around just makes the mission just plain un-fun. Pity.

+1 to all of that,I'm legit so tired of the ambushes

Ambushes are such a slog, cut the gameplay,Its on long maps, enemies are everywhere and use that dumb AI that just **speed** toward you even in concealment, like straight up run to you
At least in the abandoned city I could go in the buildings to help with sneaking/advantage,now its just going snail pace cause one dash could lead to 2 dudes just getting crit killed.

And since the enemy even in concealment is coded to go toward you,it's just dumb cause you are supposed to go fast to avoid them, but dashing remove your chances of survival if they spot you on your turn, since they get to reposition AND then get their turn.

Also I swear,I wanna see those % on the chances
Cause minor feel like a 80%,like damn dude I can have 10 in a row in minor chance, and easily 8 out of 10 is a damn ambush
And like near the end you can be powered armor + plasma, and the ambush chance is still like, moderate to major, its just plain annoying to get.

At least make more missions have a chance to cancel ambush risk with a soldier instead of wounded.

Like yeah tell me I suck or whatev, but the moment I get an ambush,I just open console and tatc,I don't have the will or time to waste on this one boring mission.

And trust me,I play that game a lot,I have 400h,been playing with CI on since like the 50h cap,and its ton of fun,but I don't like to just idle, move slowly until objective reached, the supply mission is the middle between boring and okay, reinforcements is what make it boring, without it I'd like it a lot more.
