Explanation of new CV solar panels
Explanation on the new solar panels for capital vessels:
The old solar panels were removed from capital vessels and replaced with the new ones because solar panels on CVs were causing save errors resulting in parts of ships being deleted on servers.
  • The solar power code was never intended by the developers to be used on Capital Vessels and after investigations and reports it was determined CV solar panels was a cause of this save error.
  • This was a very serious problem that caused headaches for both players and server admins.
  • Solar power was also just buggy in general on capital vessels, often requiring a reload of the playfield to calculate the proper power values.
  • Old solar panels and solar capacitors can no longer be placed on capital vessels.
  • A new set of small and large CV solar panels have been added.
  • You will need to update your blueprints by removing solar capacitors and replacing the old solar panels with the new ones.
  • The new CV solar panels function differently. They no longer produce power based on sunlight and no longer require a solar capacitor.
  • They REDUCE your ship's ENERGY CONSUMPTION by the amount listed on the tooltip. They will NOT show up as an increase in power generation nor will they show up under the solar power statistics.
  • You will still need at least 1 generator, 1 fuel tank, and some fuel.
  • You may place up to 24 small CV panels and an additional 24 large CV panels.
  • If your ship's total energy consumption is 0 or negative, you will effectively not use any fuel.
  • These are being added because being able to power a small capital vessel without using fuel is an important quality of life feature, especially for servers where your fuel is always being used. This opens up a more nomadic play style for those who want it while on a server, whereas before it was just frustrating to deal with.

I know this isn't an ideal solution, and certainly less realistic. But it's far better because it doesn't risk deleting parts of people's ships. You can no longer park and "save up" a massive amount of power, but the trade off is the new panels are always on, providing a decrease in energy consumption.
The alternative would have just been to remove CV solar panels with nothing to replace it with. We really had no choice in this, as bugs that delete ships are something we want to avoid in the scenario.
Please don't leave comments like "the old system was better." The "old system" was deleting people's ships, so it wasn't better.
No, there is nothing we can do to fix solar power so it works realistically on capital vessels.
No, we will not be changing it back unless and until it is properly coded to work on capital vessels.

I wonder if this will impact my dreams of having a promethium generator recharge a battery bank of some kind, such as used by what is currently the orange deco "capacitor" block. I want a WW2 (actually WW1, too) submarine in space with engines and batteries!

Thanks for the explanation Ravien much appreciated ;)

Yeah not having a power generation confused me but understand them now. Great work I never had problems with the others but from the sounds of it a lot of others did and these should hopefully solve all those issues

Thanks for the explanation! I have to wonder how though how you found it was attached to the CV solar stuff... and not that I doubt it was the cause, just the difficulty I have getting from "ships disappearing" to "Base solar panels/capacitors".

Nice work to you guys and everyone who helped to figure out the source of the problem!

Thanks for the explanation! I didn't know it was causing that much (or such severe) issues.

Here is hoping Eleon will make it a vanilla feature some day.

Server admins started noticing the places that were deleted were where the solar panels were. :D

The new Solarpanels ar a great edition and way better than the old buggy solution - so i am pretty happy about that. All thumbs up!

Yeah thanks and I appreciate you doing the work for us to at least have something, to me thats better than not having it at all

Did anyone read about new designs of anti-solar panels that can absorb only 25% of full power during night time in real life? I don't know if they tested them or not. If they work, that will beat sci-fi when devs wish they should have done that long ago because it is only sci-fi that stands for science fiction (fiction means not real or didn't happen in real life). Devs worry about realistic too much.

@Topazfinder,yes i was reading about those the sun side produces power during the day and the dark side during the night something like 30% more efficient than current solar panels.

Good explanation, this answers a lot of questions I had. One thing I wondered about though, why can't the capacitors not be used with the current system? Say that the solar panels always give a "free" charge that goes into capacitors, that we can use as batteries? Is it a balancing thing to prevent unlimited free power?

This was super helpful, thank you!

So I know this thread hasn't been responded to for a month. But I'm curious about the same question Venomspawn had. Or more specifically...

Does the capacitor also bug out CV saves, or is it only the solar panels? And.. in either event, is there any chance the current solar panels could be fed into some sort of capacitor system (or workaround) in the future? Mostly asking out of curiosity. Current solars are fine and helpful in their current "energy draw reduction" state. Some kind of capacitor would just be QoL for those 1200+-3600+ power spikes that still eat fuel no matter what (assuming you can fit 24-48 solars).

Hi Ravien,

I really enjoy Reforged Eden but the Server I am currently on does not have it (yet). We want to finish the current scenario first. But we all, including Admin, are wanting solar panels for CVs. The new solar panels describes in this post will be just the right thing.

Is there a chance that we can get your solar panels as a stand-alone mod ?
Don't know how much work it is but I am sure we are not the only server wanting this... :-)

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this,

Greetings
Tam

Unfortunately Empyrion does not really support any stand alone modifications.
What you'd need to do is learn how to make a custom scenario and edit the .ecf config files. You're free to copy the CV solar panels into your own config though I can't really help you do this.
