FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (CAN'T FIND RECIPE?)
CAN'T SEE THE RECIPE?
If you cannot find the recipe you have simply not enabled the mod correctly.
Probably not your fault, as the menus can be a bit confusing:

Multiplayer:
When hosting through the main menu you need to activate the mods on the main-menu 'Mods' menu first. After that you will see the settings/options when going through the 'Host' menu. When editing server settings you should see two different tabs/options - workshop and mods. Workshop controls downloaded content, Mods selects which of the mods are activated.*

Dedicated Server:
The above answer for Multiplayer also applies. You will need to add the workshopID and modID to the cache/server/<servername>.ini file.

*This is relevant to content which has multiple sub-mods within as some can't be enabled at the same time -- the skill recovery journal only has the one option but even so you have to enable it under both tabs.

Single-Player:
For on-going/existing games you have to, on the Load menu option, before hitting Play, select More. There you can actually add mods to your existing save. Otherwise, enabling it on the main menu Mods list will activate it for new games.

Note for Sandbox Recipe:
In some cases host-services may not save changes to sandbox options, you may need to delete the sandbox file and later change the settings for it to stick. Also, there's a known issue of the sandbox recipe breaking on "=" (equal signs), the default recipe asks for 3 leather strips. If your recipe doesn't look the default value try removing the `=3`. Please let me know your setup details so that bug can be resolved.

Note for Non-English Players: The recipe names are also translated into a few different languages. As such the recipe may be listed in your language.

Do I need to start a new game?
No, you just need to craft a journal to get started.

Is it safe to remove this mod mid-play?
Yes. However, removing it will delete the journals held and any progress stored in them; Players will have to re-craft them if you re-enable the journal.

Where do I find the journals?
You craft them. The recipe can be found under "bind journal" or under your native language's translation. If you don't see the recipe check `CAN'T SEE THE RECIPE?` question and answer above.

How do I use the journal?
You will see the option to "transcribe journal" when you have a writing tool and bound journal (that is unclaimed or one you've written in before.) Trying to transcribe or read another person's journal in MP will not work (outside of Split-Screen-CO-OP).

Transcribe One/All? Just ignore it, it's a jank-bug from the fact "transcribe" is a recipe that results in an item used in it - it's effectively the same action.

How does it work?
The journals save skill's respective XP - ignoring profession/trait starting levels. There is also a sandbox option to lower return percentage (default is 100%). As well as options for types of XP saved, based on skill category, TV shows. By default, TV XP and some categories are disabled.

The XP in the journal keeps changing between characters?
XP stored in the journal reflects the current character reading it. You will notices changes to the displayed XP if you take characters with different starting traits or professions (including fast/slow learner). The XP in the journal is flat, and it should not be possible to create more through recreating characters.

Warning:
Journals have to be manually updated using a pen or pencil. You can check the tool-tip for XP and recipes. Careful if you die holding your journal as it may be difficult to retrieve it from your moving corpse or it could be stolen/destroyed by other players.

Are these journals one time use?
Not by default. You are expected to keep using the same journal and updating it over time. Unless you toggle the one-time use, which makes it so XP is depleted and will require crafting a new journal.

Are recipes saved?
Yes, except for profession/trait gained (just like skill levels).

Hi @chuckleberry Finn,
Fantastic mod—thanks! We've been using it for over 10 months and love it. We made some adjustments on our server to ensure players get 100% of their skills back from journals. While most skills revert to 100% after setting sandbox options to 100, aiming and reloading only return at 50% unless we select Sniper and Shooter traits. Skills like carpentry, cooking, and axe return at levels 9 and 10, but aiming and reloading remain at 5 and 6.

I’m sorry if this is a repeated question but I could not find a solution to the problem,
any help would be greatly appreciated!

What do I do if I accidentally used an old version of the mod on new build, transcribed the skills but then couldnt read and reinstalled new version of mod it says its unsafe to use that. Is the new-crafted journal will be fine or is it now "sewed" in the game save? I also read the old one and it gained me a bit more xp than I had.

Hi, my friend and I are having problems reading each other's journals, because it keeps saying "Doesn't feel right to read someone else's journal.". How do we disable this?

That's an intended feature.

Only by playing split screen from the same account ;3

So if I'm grasping this right, taking different professions and traits would affect what the journal gives but reading skill books before reading the journal would mean nothing.

Am I parsing that correctly?

The goal is that the XP stored in the journal is equal to that of a 0 skill 0 traits (0/0) character. This means that the XP shouldn't be exploitable. So yes, skill books shouldn't cause an issue or stack. Ideally.

yup, just tested it; one death, rerolled character, read books. Second death (that dirty backbiting ♥♥♥♥♥) same character again, no books, same final levels. So yeah, no need to bookworm it.

Good to know.
