I prefer to go with the Vampires because it feels stronger to me. (You also get a much cooler Rosa)
You should rush the war with the Arcturian Order as quickly as possible and then end it as quickly as possible, if they get volunteers you're done for.
After taking the Order down, you have 2 choices:
You can wait years and years to research technologies to catch up with the world and increase your army along the way with monthly population(Society of Bones is better for this)
or
You can declare war on your neighbours as quickly as possible(ignore the focuses on the right side of the focus tree) and get the focuses to ''catch up'' with technology. If you do it just right you can be producing Assault Rifles while your enemies are still on Machine Pistols. Also, if you choose the aggressive path which is much more fun you should be extra aggressive and attack provinces with more population so you can convert them to ponypower.
Other tips: be sure to never have a stockpile of weapons, you must spam out units like there is no tomorrow
Don't waste crystals on ''create weapons'' too early (for example on swords and spears)
Be sure to use ''create weapons'' as much as possible after taking down the order if you're going to play aggressive
Most of the time converting the living is a better pick than create weapons, since you can get equipment from the enemy and converting gives you back your crystals and creating weapons destroys some of the crystals in Magehold
The game pretty much becomes a slug fest after you take out Watertowns, the Free North, Arrowpeaks and Farbrook. From these places you should be able to get enough units to push your way through to big population centers like the Herzland, from there it's all over for Gryffonia
P.S. Make sure to garrison The End and Magehold if going to war with the world, if they take either of those you can get into some big trouble (you need Magehold to convert the living) but if they land next to those ports you can take out entire units and get a lot of equipment which is very strong
