Magical suicide?
I noticed downed enemy magical pawns would often cast something and then... die due to the lack of brain. Literaly. As in organ.

Is this by design?

I think think you're talking about Death Retaliation. It's a mage's "last hope" attack. You can adjust it in the settings.
