Incapable of Violent alternatives
My Arcane Mage is incapable of being violent. So... I thought maybe instead of a magic missile, why not polymorph the raider? That's harmless, isn't it?

Sure, but then you'd be an Enchanter and not an Arcane mage.
There are plenty of ways to make a non-violent mage useful, even the mage types, like fire mage, that seem to focus on destruction.
