Cantrips?
I have a wayfarer and wanderer. Both seem to have no actual abilities, but their skills seem to mention abilities/cantrips. How do you get those? These two characters feel utterly useless relatively to the rest of my party.

Cantrips are abilities any mage class can use. Fighters have similar abilities. They come in the form of single use scrolls like "Mage Spell: Smoke Cloud" or "Fighter Skill: Heavy Blow." You can trade for the scrolls or make them after researching scribing and making a printing bench.

like torann said the can learn spells from scrolls that every mage can learn. the special about them is they can improve them into mighty spells for example the wanderer can learn the spell rain from a scroll and if you put enough points into cantrips power the rain becomes a storm and the thunders focuses on enemies or the smokeclouds spell blinds enemies. points into cantrips versatility can make that the spell magelight fires ligthning at nearby enemies every few seconds and emp becomes a chance to apply sabotage on mechs while the temprature orbs apply buffs to nearby pawns

Maybe the wayfarer/wanderer could start with a random cantrip so they have something straight away rather then having to wait to get your magic items
