Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (1:1 realistic populated map) - NEW VERSION OUT!

Description
A rural region in central Czechoslovakia known for gentle rolling hills, countless streams and rivers and picturesque villages. Centered around Jihlava river, this predominantly agricultural countryside offers vast opportunities for expansion, despite the hilly landscape making careful planning a neccessity for large projects. Underdevelopped and poor, Bohemian-Moravian Highlands eagerly await coming industrialization.

1. What this map is?

Bohemian-Moravian Highlands is a map that aims to provide a prepopulated map that pushes the boundaries of authenticity by recreating an existing region in Czechoslovakia in 1:1 scale and as faithfully as possible. The goal is not only to model an authentic terrain but also to offer existing infrastructure reflecting the state of things in 1960 and provide settlements that don't serve as a mere decorations, but can be integrated into your WRSR experience. You are not taming a wilderness but rather developping a region that, while rather poor, has been settled for centuries.

Hence, the map can described by these features:
  • 1:1 scale - the map covers a region of 21x21 km;
  • Vanilla approach - the map contains no modded buildings (but see "Advised mods" section!);
  • Realistic topography and terrain - imported heightmap and careful adjustments offer an authentic experience of small rivers, hills and valleys and countless forests of the highlands;
  • Recreating the 1960s - based on military maps from 1958-1963, this map offers an accurate recreation of early 1960s conditions in the region as regards infrastructure, settlements, industry and transportation;
  • Existing infrastructure - existing for centuries, the region has its own road and railway infrastructure, there is also electricity and water installed in certain places. While sufficient for the start, this infrastructure is anything but robust. Hence, most expansions will also require reinforcing the existing infrastructure.
  • Starting location - while the map can be played as any other blank map, the town of Okříšky is specifically set up to serve as a starting town that provides for all the needs of its citizens and offers working and supplied construction offices to speed up the early game and reinforce the feeling of entering an existing world.

For some insight and introduction of the map, I made two showcase videos in which I talk about its real counterpart as well as about the mapbuilding and the region's history; all in order to bring the map a little closer to you:

2. Prepopulated map going beyond
Don't be afraid of the map, it is there for you; not vice versa. If you wish so, feel free to ignore any existing infrastructure and industry and focus on your own game.

The map is meant to be played as a prepopulated map. To achieve believability, the map not only provides villages but also crucial infrastructure in a form of shops and bus stations, so each village can be turned into a source of workforce without much effort. This should in turn discourage building one megacity as it is simply more economic to work with what you already have. The map should - like in reality - lead towards wide builds, not tall builds.

Hence, apart from villages, there is also road and railway network, basic electricity infrastructure and - in case of bigger cities - fresh and water infrastructure included. To facilitate easier start and easier expansion, basic resources are provided in warehouses throughout the map.

3. Advised mods

While the map does not use mods, I strongly advise you to use Better Trees Mod. It makes trees smaller. Not only will forests look much more realistic, but vegetation is used on the map to simulate fences in villages. Not using the mod will make bushes and trees too large and it won't look great :(

Also, vanilla heating plants are not suitable for dispersed villages. Look for small modded heating plants.

4. Instructions and tips for your first start

Firstly, to make start less overwhelming, there is a video that gives tips and tricks for your first start:

Should you skip the video, there is a couple of very basic starting instructions:
  • There is a map of all the existing infrastructure and industry in the Steam Workshop page of the map, it should make finding things much easier (will be updated);
  • Starting city is called Okříšky and it is roughly in the middle of the map, where the two railway lines meet. Třebíč, Brtnice, Opatov and Stařeč are also viable starting points;
  • Poplar trees are used to designate water at altitudes other than 0m. Small rivers and streams are made with rockpainting tool and lined with poplar trees.
  • Certain small rivers and streams have sewage piping going to a proper "0 altitude" river under them to simulate how much of waste water was disposed back then. This makes it easier to get rid of waste water in areas further away from the main "0 altitude" river.
  • Fires set to frequent may result in a lot of buildings being destroyed before you even get to their respective part of the map;
  • Strating with building decay switched off will make things easier;
  • Upon starting the map, letting the map run for 1,5 months on fast forward is advised. This will make people who spawn in residential building other than village and old city houses leave/die and you won't be bombarded by alert messages. Ideally, you should wait until your active population count reaches 0;
  • All buildings are closed at the start. This includes shops, industry, water treatment plants, technical offices etc., but also residential buildings. This means that while people will spawn in residential buildings other than village and old city houses, in subsequent gameplay new people will not move into these buildings until you allow them.
  • Water for Okříšky is provided through Heraltice Water Treatment Plant. Heraltice are a village to the west of Okříšky.
  • Heating is provided only for Okříšky, Třebíč and Brtnice. Dispersed villages make using vanilla heating difficult. Mods (check robs074's heating plants) are advised.
  • To the west of Okříšky is a landfill. Launch vehicles from there when you activate the cities - they take care of Heraltice + Nová Ves' garbage.
  • In warehouses and in some buildings, some resources are provided at the start. This should make activating certain buildings easier at the start and speed the start up. Village shops have food in them.
  • In railway stations at Okříšky, Stařeč and Třebíč, you can unload oil, aggregates and cargo by sending a train to respective unloading stations and issuing "wait until unloaded" order. Trucks can then take the resources.
  • Some vehicles are provided. There are vehicles at depots, technical offices, etc. Railway depot at Okříšky contains several small cargo trains. Okříšky, Třebíč (the bus depot) and Brtnice have depots with trucks with pre-set routes. If you decide to start playing, launch them all. Decorative traffic (trains and personal cars) doesn't have any purpose apart from looking good.

The map may be a little more demanding on hardware than base-game maps as the number of assets (especially trees) is somewhat higher.

If you encounter any issues, please leave a comment. I'll try to fix it. It is, after all, my first (and last) created map.

v. 1.3 (13/11/2024) - hotfix + quickfix + Brtnice/Opatov fix + Třebíč rework. See changelog.

Enjoy!

No, not really. I go in the mod direction primarily due to Central Europe Village packs by Quieklebendig. I will also use the Tiny heating plant by robs07 to solve heating for small villages and Trafostation - Electric Substation & Switch by Bref because vanilla switches absolutely don't fit the aesthetics of rural countryside. Apart from that, I don't really intend to use anything else. Readability of the map is still the primary concern. That being said, with the amount of work I have right now, I will definitely not get to it earlier than October :(

I hope it won't be modded too much, I personally like the use of only vanilla buildings.

Heaps of notices about things wrong in the towns.

Yes, definitely! I am planning to release a version reflecting late 1940s (I would do 30s but I just don't have the maps from that era). I am working on it at the moment. I will add some desperately needed mods and replace the modernist buildings with the old ones from the DLC. I plan to make it as a definitive version of the map. Not really sure when it will be done, though.

Are there any plans for an early start version?

Is there a unpopuleted version of the map (roads, rail can stay) ?

Hey, I plan to make a reworked separate 1930s version of the map using both workshop mods as well as new assets from the DLC sometime in the future. I will also look into updating it to make it compatible with the new DLC in its current form, provided it will then not become dependant on having the DLC as I still want to keep this pure vanilla. I haven't had a look at the DLC yet, so no idea how it works in this regard.

Great map. I'd love some kind of an older version compatible with the early start DLC.

Do you have an empty map version?

Thanks again for the great map. I just finished my 50 year playthrough of it on realistic mode, and posted a video about it here: https://youtu.be/Zspz9vF54xo?si=b0UBcZWS5QTu9imB
