DEI - Roman Shieldwall

Description
THIS MOD REQUIRES Divide Et Impera parts 1,2 and 3!!

Introduction & Contents
Roman Legionnaries have "defensive formation" in vanilla DEI, which is essentially a shieldwall ability which helps Roman infantry outlast their foe with better stamina and stats. However, the limits of modding R2 has made it incapable of stretching wider than a certain point unlike phalaxes and barabarian shieldwalls in DEI. For those who found this frustrating and lackluster, I've made a mod which gives native Roman infantry units their own version of the barbarian shieldwall ability. Yes, this mod is OP af.

Here are some further details:
  • After Polybian reforms take place, Only Scipio Bodyguards and Late Polybian Principes will have access to the custom shieldwall ability. For the sake of consistency, I have made Late Triarii a hoplite unit as well, like its earlier Camillan counterpart. Allied Socii variants of these units will not be affected.
  • Once Marian and Imperial reforms take place, all of your native, non-auxiliary legionary type units will have access to the custom shieldwall ability.
  • The ability is overpowered against most types of infantry and even cavalry since it functions the same way a hoplite phalanx or barbarian shieldwall does; however, the roman shieldwall has slightly shorter reach. In other words, despite having higher damage output, roman units with their shieldwall enabled will not be able to beat hoplites or pikemen on a straight confrontation.
  • The animation may look awkward for some users (including myself), since Romans who are in the second and third row will thrust their swords forward and their shield around their waist repeatedly, essentially mimicking the barbarian shieldwall ability. Unfortunately I cannot do anything to make these animations look less awkward at the moment.
  • Roman units with the custom shieldwall ability retains the use of pila and also maintains their ability to use disciplined formation.
  • Yes, this mod is compatible with "Stronger Rome."

Note that this mod is currently pretty op. I will nerf this ability in what ways I can to try to make it as immersive as possible.

Installation & Compatibility
  • To install, first subscribe to this mod, and place this mod above the 3 DEI parts in the mod launcher.
  • If you have other submods for DEI which you want to play with, simply place this mod over them as well to make sure the changes within this mod override them all. If you want to play this mod with my other submods, also place this mod on top of them.
  • This mod is save game compatible, and will likely be compatible with all future versions of DEI. I will update this mod should the combat system of vanilla DEI be overhauled once more.
  • Although this mod will be multiplayer compatible, multiplayer in R2 is often a very buggy process that I will not be able help much should it become an issue. All I can say regarding this is make sure both parties have the identical setup and mod load order when attempting multiplayer.

Credits
All of the texts and entries used in making this submod are not my original work, and are credited to the DEI team.
I have merely rearranged & edited existing content from DEI and the R2 native files to create this submod.
Seriously, go make a donation for DEI or something. The project deserves it.
Thanks to "Imputed" from the DEI Discord channel for helping me with the screenshots. Much appreciated.

The modding scene for R2 is so dead though. The only people who could do it are people I already know. And I have asked many times.

You should make a post in Steam asking for someone to take over

If only somebody could take over the modding scene for me, I've long left this game for years now. T-T

Hah.. the mod is perhaps out of date.

I've used it with DEI 1.3.3 and 1.3.4

I use the roman units reskin and when I turn on this mod the textures of the shields, the bodies of the units disappear. It's weird, but it's a fact.

I believe the mod should not need an update. Pls let me know if it does.

the standard defensive formation does not behave the same as the shieldwall ability. It is just the same as the hoplite phalanx with lower range. Defensive formation can at times be better but the issue is due to how the engine works it can actually end up being disadvantageous to use it at all. Shieldwall on the other hand is better against crowded infantry and even cavalry.
