Rome At War

Description
WILDFIRE STUDIOS' SUMMARY FROM 2001

WildFire Games has released quite possibly the largest mod for "Age of Empires II: Age of Kings", featuring the replacement of the Mesoamerican civilisations of the Aztecs and the Mayans with the Romans and Greeks. With over 13,000 downloads and featured on the cover disks of PC Powerplay from Australia and GameStar from Germany. Both are leading gaming magazines. Now you too can build an empire on the backs of your enemies!

March your soldiers up and down the Rhine, across the sands of North Africa, through the Grecian city-states, along Hadrian's Wall, and patrol the shores of the Mediterranean Sea as you subdue all who stand in your path. Can you build an empire to equal Augustus and Caesar? Will your name be immortalised on busts of marble and triumphal arches?

FEATURES

-Total Conversion of the Mesoamerican Build Set into a new Mediterranean one.

-Includes a full conversion of the Aztecs to the Romans and the Mayans to the Greeks.

-5 new units (including the Legionary and the Auxila - a light horseman).

-Tons of new eye candy, including henges, statues, aquaducts, and bath-houses.

-35 new buildings, including 3 brand new renders.

-Complete sound and graphics interface conversions (including a hexed language.dll).

-Exhaustively playtested by some of the best modders in the AoK scene.

RAKOVSKY'S DESCRIPTION

Wildfire Studios made the Rome At War Mod in 2001. Some AOE2 Scenarios depicting the 1st-2nd Centuries AD that I am focusing on were made with RAW, and I have AOK HD, so I wanted to play those Scenarios in AOK HD. The original AOE2 RAW Mod used an AKX file and other data files, so it needed to be converted to work on the HD version. I was unable by myself alone to convert the Mod to work with AOK HD using the Genie Converter, which converts Mods to work with AOK HD. So the Genie Converter's Creator, Vardamir (AKA "Jorritkarwehr") sent me a copy of the RAW Mod that he converted for AOE2 HD. It worked for me, so on this webpage I am presenting his RAW Mod as he converted it to work on AOE2 HD.

Since Wildfire Studios hadn't posted a converted version of their Mod for AOK HD, I emailed them. Jason from Wildfire Studios gave me permission to post the converted Mod. Stan from the Wildfire Team encouraged me to upload the Mod file.

The main Advantage of the Mod is that it lets you play Scenarios made with Rome at War (R.A.W.) and lets you design your own. I suspect that the good quality AOE2 HD DLC "The Forgotten" may have used some R.A.W. units and buildings, like for the legions and the Italian Civ. But the downside with using The Forgotten for making ancient Roman Scenarios is that The Forgotten is set in the medieval period, like with the Sforza Campaign. So while The Forgotten's buildings remind me somewhat of ancient Roman buildings, they also remind me of medieval Italy. So R.A.W. might help you do a better job making an ancient Roman campaign.

I fixed the sound directory so that the Mod will play Roman or Greek music as intended when you start Standard Games as the Romans or Greeks. The Mod still works for me as of today, 8/16/21.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Subscribe to the Mod
2. Make sure that you have no other Design Mods "enabled" or turned on in your game's workshop that could interfere with it, particularly architecture Mods. You can still enable Scenarios and Music Mods though.
3. Go to your Single Player menu and make sure that "Original Game" is selected in your Dataset box in the top right corner of your screen.
4. Open and run the "My City" Campaign in your Single Player Campaign Menu to check if the Mod works.

SCENARIOS FOR ROME AT WAR

I have played and recommend the following Campaigns and Scenarios on AOE2 HD using the R.A.W. Mod:

- Roman learning Campaign (includes Boudica's revolt from 60 AD)
http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=974

- Jerusalem 65AD (I beat this Showcase Scenario by putting the relic in the Temple and then ejecting the relic from it.) http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=11500

- Germania (This is a campaign has only one scenario. Its story relates to the movie "Gladiator", which took place in 180 AD.)
http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=898

Here is a list of entries in the AOE2 Heaven Games database that include "Rome At War":
http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/lister.php?search=%22rome+at+war%22

The Heaven Games database's RAW campaign "El Gladiador (English Version)" works in AOE2:TC (CD version). But in AOE2 HD (2013), a trigger glitch in the second scenario shows up that keeps it from progressing past the part where Commodus is supposed to arrive in the emperor's camp. So I recommend playing this campaign in AOE2 (CD) or else using the "i r winner" cheat when you get to that part in the scenario.

StevnG,

Let me clarify that Jorritkarwehr did not make the Rome At War mod. The actual maker of Rome At War is Wildfire Studios. I recommend going to the WIldfire Studios forum, which is still in use:
wildfiregames.com/forum

Wildfire Studios made Rome At War for AOE1 (CD version). Jorritkawehr took the Rome At War AOE1 CD version and changed it to work with AOE1 HD. Then Wildfire Studios gave me permission by email to upload it online.

I guessed not, just had to be said.

Stevn, I sent you a Friend request so that we can chat with PMs. I don't think that you are asking about the ROME AT WAR Mod in particular, right?
StevnG Jan 2, 2022 @ 12:43pm
rakovsky well I was wondering if Jorritkarwehr still changes certain units into a different unit skin that exist in game.
rakovsky  [author] Dec 31, 2021 @ 4:40pm
What do you mean by that, Stevn?
StevnG Oct 27, 2021 @ 2:37pm
Do you still make graphics reshuffles?
rakovsky  [author] Aug 16, 2021 @ 6:02pm
Nice.
Fun fact:
The AOE2 HD DLC "The Forgotten" took its Legion unit and maybe other objects from this R.A.W. Mod. Since AOE2 DE by default includes "The Forgotten," I guess that AOE2 DE might have indirectly picked up some objects/units from this Mod too.
RMPGSwift Aug 16, 2021 @ 3:53pm
It now works since i am just using the original data set. Thank you for the help

RMPGSwift and IMPERATOR,

After reading your messages, I checked and the Mod still works for me on AOE2 HD as of today, 8/16/21.

My guess is that it did not work for RMPGSwift because he did not have "Original Dataset" selected in his Single Player Menu. This is because the Mod is compatible with the "Original Dataset" - AOE2 TC, but not the later ones that come with DLCs like The Forgotten. But it's still pretty easy to switch between Datasets by going to your Single Player Menu and switching Datasets.

Another possibility is that RMPGSwift has another Mod enabled that interferes with the Rome At War Mod, like an architecture Mod. But I doubt that this is the case. I have added this information to my Description and I took a new screenshot of the My City map and posted it above to show that the Mod is still working.
