@Habanero these are going to come in very handy! I'm probably going to have to bake the normals of the hi-res figures onto the lo-res polys, but you expect to see some of these assets make their way into the mod soon! Thanks!

Thank you! I was thinking that's probably what I had to do but I wanted to see if the work was already done somewhere with the audio already split out. But that's totally fine! Awesome mod btw!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Mar 11 @ 8:19am
Hello, @Gooseggs! I would say that probably the easiest thing to do is the same thing you'd do with a physical copy: record a gaming session either with this mod, or running the ROM in MAME, and then extracting the audio from the recording. You could stream your session to Twitch, for example, and then download the video.
Gooseggs Mar 10 @ 4:43pm
Hey Mr. Mixelplik, I'm attempting to make a physical version that mimics as close to the original as possible. I've been trying to find sounds and found that this has most if not all of them! Do you know where I can get these sounds? (I don't own a physical copy)
emilwmiller Dec 18, 2024 @ 4:35pm
Bless you, Mr. Mixelplik! Very straightforward instructions that worked like a charm. It's going to be great to play this game with my son again. I owned the original until my evil ex took it in the divorce...and then sold it for cigarette money! We used to have friends over once a week to play. I rigged the tower up on a 4-stop rotor so I could spin it to each persons position when it was their turn and I even put in a small FM transmitter so the sound could go out over our stereo. I truly love this game and you have done an amazing job of bringing it back to life for all of us!!!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Dec 18, 2024 @ 5:36am
Hello @emilwmiller! To begin, load Tabletop Simulator, and choose the big "Create" button. Choose whether you want to play single-player or multi-player. A table should load, and you should be presented with a Games window (you can also bring up the Games window anytime using the first icon at the top of the screen). You'll find this mod, or any other mod you subscribe to, under the blue "Workshop" section of the Games window. Click the game and select "Load."
emilwmiller Dec 18, 2024 @ 1:36am
I'm brand new to this so I'm going to admit to my ignorance right upfront. I bought Tabletop Simulator, downloaded and installed it. Then I SUBSCRIBED to your game...it shows "SUBSCRIBED" on this page. I just can't figure out how to actually load the game into Tabletop Simulator. I tried opening the .json file but that just cause a Tabletop Simulator "Catastrophic Failure". Can you help me get a clue? Thank you!
Buck Jun 13, 2024 @ 6:51pm
I have a real copy of this but love the ez set up of digital and the auto tracking on the cards of warriors ect! So good thx!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] May 6, 2024 @ 2:52pm
@Maxx, the button UI elements should only appear on the screen while it's your turn, to prevent other players with messing with your turn
PbP-DM May 4, 2024 @ 6:22am
Love this, I own the game but my tower stopped working. lol One thing that annoys me and I cant figure out is the big version of the tower buttons disappears early on and I dont know how to get it back. Other than that, this is amazing. Thank you.
RifRafJonesy Mar 21, 2024 @ 11:10am
I bought the IRL game when it came out. Took ALL of my Christmas money to get it. Way back then it was $40-$50, a lot for a teenager to spend back then. Loved the game. Sadly it broke after about 30 years. Looking forward to giving this mod a go!
Scythesickle Feb 2, 2024 @ 5:44am
@gazoxtahagen This game is already one of the best representations I've seen of the game, but your suggesteion of making it a monument to the original, built on those mechanisms that were rediscovered recently, better emulating the tower experience would be truly great. If you enjoy the work I think it would be worthwhile, so many of the simulations out there get so much wrong. I don't think the original game was the pinnacle of design but it WAS better and deserves a well done simulation of the experience. I think seeing the tower windows light up in a picture in picture sort of display could also simulate players looking closely at the tower waiting to see what will happen on their turn, or maybe an optional autozoom fixed camera in game? Is that possible?

All your feature ideas sound great, looking forward to it.

Speaking of Pegasus management in the game, I'm starting to question if this is something I should have done… or, as a preservationalist, a decision I had the right to make. There's a part of me that wants to strip out all of the TTS hooks and make the Tower as close to emulating the original as possible. This would probably involve rebuilding the Tower from the ground up, but there are a lot of things I would do differently in the current version of TTS, specifically with the UI API where graphic overlays and sounds don't have to be contained in separate AssetBundles. And getting rid of the interaction with the TTS seats would allow the Tower code to be stored in the object itself, so it could stand apart from the game. Then we could get some proper hotseat support, and I could write the variable storage to mirror the ROM and introduce saved game support. All of which is to say that we're coming up on the 7th anniversary of this mod, and I think the best days are still ahead!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Jan 30, 2024 @ 5:20am
Yeah, the only difference in this TTS version is that the Tower keeps track of Pegasus ownership, so you must interact with it on your inventory card so that it will be removed from your inventory and can be given as a reward again.
I did this mainly because it was technologically impossible to keep track of Pegasus ownership in the board game; having done a deep dive into the actual ROM chip and code, I can verify that you'd be hard-pressed to find a place in memory to store it, even as a four-digit binary. WIth TTS it's possible, so I wanted to eliminate a personal annoyance of mine: being award a Pegasus as loot when you already have one.
twentyquestion Jan 29, 2024 @ 5:23pm
Ok so it’s the same as the manual describes,I thought maybe because its TTS it was a different method. Thanks

According to the rule book:
"... if you have already collected the magic key in the kingdom you presently occupy, you may fly to a territory with a building on it in another kingdom, press the FRONTIER button on the same turn and wait until your next turn to press the appropriate building button." This version should work the same way... hit FRONTIER first, end your turn, and then on the next turn you're allowed to engage the building.
twentyquestion Jan 28, 2024 @ 12:34pm
How do you use the pegasus to go to a building in the kingdom to the right after you obtain the proper key?
Kingbobman Mar 31, 2023 @ 9:58am
Everything about this table is perfect, and as a long-time player of the physical DARK TOWER I appreciate you patching all the bugs with the Clear button.
Scythesickle Feb 17, 2023 @ 2:18pm
Your algorithm updates make this sublime. Thank you for this :)
templars83 Oct 22, 2022 @ 11:26pm
I remember wanting this so much but geesh, it's a random crap game though the work you put in here is appreciated.
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Aug 10, 2022 @ 6:50am
Thanks for the tip, @Habanero! I grabbed it. I wish I could find a decent scan of all six sides; I'd put it in the mod. I've been tempted to buy just the box.
Habanero Aug 9, 2022 @ 8:09pm
A poster-format scan of the box was uploaded a while ago, dunno if you saw it.

This game was such a big part of my youth. Thank you so much, for this.

Hey, everyone! Just wanted folks to know that a new update has gone live, with the algorithm updates (as well as a couple of other things). Check out the Change Notes tab above for a full list of changes. And don't forget to rate the mod if you enjoy it! Five years and counting!!!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Apr 1, 2022 @ 7:32am
Thanks @Keeper of the Void! I do have a big update coming! Follow this thread on Board Game Geek:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1087086/anyone-know-chance-event-happening
...in which I've gotten my hands on the actual board game's source code and try picking it apart!
Keeper of the Void Apr 1, 2022 @ 5:46am
This! This is the reason I re-installed Tabletop Simulator. I just recently got the Return to Dark Tower board game from Restoration Games and got curious if anyone had recreated the original here. Glad I looked. Thank you.
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Mar 6, 2022 @ 5:17pm
Hi, @AJtheNerd! If you hit the Subscribe button on this page, the mod should be ready for you. Just boot up Tabletop Simulator, click the CREATE button, and then the SINGLEPLAYER button. A "Games" window should pop up. There will be a blue button called "Workshop." All of the mods you subscribe to, including this one, should be there!
AJtheNerd Mar 6, 2022 @ 1:35pm
Hello. Is this a game that can still be played? I bought the $19.99 tabletop simulator, but I can't figure out how to play. I am new to Steam. thanks
notradaem Nov 24, 2021 @ 11:58pm
literally the best mod for tabletop sim. so accurate.
orkus2001 Nov 20, 2021 @ 10:42am
Man, this f*ing awesome. My physical copy broke down about 1000 years ago after having been played a lot. This adaptation is beyond great. Sounds, down to the cylinder revolving, visuals and really, really simple to play. Well done. Thanks for taking me back about 40 years or so.
Coma-Toast May 13, 2021 @ 11:47pm
I saw Spoony's video on this back in the day and thought it was the coolest board game ever right behind Deadly Danger Dungeon
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Apr 16, 2021 @ 2:25pm
I should note, on the previous workaround, that the Tower will only ever think there is one person playing, so it will never show a Curse.
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Apr 16, 2021 @ 2:23pm
Hi, @xxThe_Lion! Yes, it's a bit of a pain, but there is a workaround:

• In the first seat, take your turn. When your action is completed, the Tower will show a dash and your color abbreviation ( -R , -B , -Y , or -G ) to let you know your turn is over. DO NOT HIT THE END BUTTON YET.
• Use TTS's "Change Color" function to move to the second seat.
• Press the END button on the Tower (you won't have the UI control pad yet). It will now be the second seat's turn.
• Repeat. Try to remember that every time you see -R , -B , -Y , or -G that it's your cue to Change Color, and then hit the END button afterwards.
xxThe_Lion Apr 13, 2021 @ 2:40am
Is there any way to play a 2 player game alone? I apparently would have to sit at two colors at the same time to get the game going. Is there a way around this?
Sauerkraut Apr 9, 2021 @ 5:08am
The tower display is black when I switch players. I press end turn (Tabletop) then I press end turn (on the tower), but it does not return the tower display (it is still black). Is there a fix for this classic game ?
ShadowNeko Mar 4, 2021 @ 4:17pm
Ohhh I didnt know that. Also you having the mod as close to real life is why I like yours over the "HD" one :P
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Mar 4, 2021 @ 7:56am
They served a purpose in real life as clips to hold the two halves of the game board together. They serve no purpose here. I can't tell you why I'm anal about things like the board clips on one hand but then on the other hand I can also completely redo things like the scoreboards.
ShadowNeko Mar 3, 2021 @ 10:39pm
Is there a purpose for the large white arrows?
ShadowNeko Feb 20, 2021 @ 3:30pm
\o/ amazing mod btw, I cant even imagine how you made this

badlands122 Oct 3, 2020 @ 9:22am
I have my ORIGINAL copy of the game from my childhood that I still enjoy, I just stumbled across this game on here that I'm sure I will enjoy. I also participated in the RTDT kick starter that I'm looking forward too!!
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Sep 5, 2020 @ 1:13pm
Finally added the token objects, everybody! Enjoy!
ADIBYTE Aug 9, 2020 @ 3:56pm
Hello Gazo, well done on the build of Dark Tower. I appreciate your scripting taglines for ease of access editing as well.
TinkerHollow Jun 27, 2020 @ 4:32pm
Otherwise, brilliant game. I've had a blast being able to finally learn and play this game that I couldn't learn from my childhood (my brother owned it and would never let me play). Your set-up is very clever and I love all of your technical and programming additions. Its great fun and I love to share it with my friends, thank you for all of your time and hard work!
TinkerHollow Jun 27, 2020 @ 4:32pm
When I read through the instructions did say that the tower was meant to only be seen by the eyes of the active player only, however, you were welcome to share the screen for a more relaxed game play. "The buttons you press and the resulting events are designed for your eyes only. However, if you prefer more interaction with your opponents, your visual and audio adventure displayed may be discussed openly...the choice is yours!, (pg.19) I think it would really help to turn the hidden tower screen into a setting we could turn on and off. It especially helps when teaching people how to play for the first time since its harder to explain things when you can't see what is happening for them. It is a cleverly designed feature though. In the meantime I'm going to see if the "peek" control will help.
Mr. Mixelplik  [author] Apr 15, 2020 @ 5:13pm
Hello, Christy. The default key to hide Tabletop Simulator's interface is F11. I'm led to understand on a Mac it might be Option-F11.
