@hottt3; I am not complaining & yes...it runs fine via Steam.
My question was about being able to run this mod without Steam. I own the game & I have the mod in the mod folder; most Steam Workshop mods will, still, run without being logged into Steam; but not this one.
hottt3 Jul 8 @ 3:47am
@eddieballgame This mod runs with Steam workshop perfectly. I've been following this thread for years. Can't remember any complaints regarding Steam workshop.
eddieballgame Jul 8 @ 2:38am
Any way to get this mod other than via Steam Workshop...which I did.
Curious, as unless one is running this game through Steam, the mod will not run. thank you
I hate Steam...sometimes. :)

@Chumley, I have a to-do list for my mod and I'm about 30-50% through it. If I ever finish this,
A) Do you know if I can package only my changes and load those on top of your mod? How do I ensure the correct load order?
B) If not, do I have your permission to publish it stand-alone as a Renaissance variant while giving you full credit for 99% of the work?
Phr0stByt3 Jul 2 @ 9:08pm
@Chumley, thanks for your reply. I'm not even sure how I would find out if a perk is referenced somewhere or not. If I delete some "city" perks (using the editor) and it doesn't warn me of dependencies, am I good? I guess I just delete a few that don't warn me of dependencies, play the game, and hope for the best :).
harry_purvis Jun 30 @ 12:33am
Thank you for your answer. I was just curious because my eye vision is very weak :)
Chumley  [author] Jun 29 @ 5:05pm
@harry_purvis - Hmm... I'm not quite sure how you'd even accomplish a font change with the current set of modding tools. But if you figure it out, feel free to share your method here in the comments.
harry_purvis Jun 28 @ 4:29am
I bought Warlock 2 to play this mod. Thank you for your hard work over the years!
Here's a question/suggestion. Is there any way(or plan) to import the font of Warlock 1? Can I modify some files with a text editor or copy/paste some files? I think warlock 1 font is more recognizable and looking good especially for my weak vision.
Chumley  [author] Jun 27 @ 8:30am
@Phr0stByt3 - I'd love to help, but I don't have any real documentation on the mod (aside from specific changes found in the patch notes). It's been years since I've made the bulk of those changes and additions.

Honestly, I'm afraid you'll have to make your changes via trial and error. I know that's tedious, but I'm not sure how else you can do it.
Phr0stByt3 Jun 26 @ 12:25am
I want to make just a few custom items and I'm struggling to find stuff I can remove. Is there any chance you'd be willing to give a pointer or two to help identify perks that have dependencies. In general, when I try to "uncheck" an item in the editor, it will pop-up with dependencies, but I have a hard believing some of these items are truly NOT in use. For example, "Baby Boom" and "Big Baby Boom" do NOT warn me about dependencies, but "Badaboom Baby Boom" does. Does that mean the first 2 perks are ok to just delete to make room for more custom perks?
Phr0stByt3 Jun 26 @ 12:25am
I started a personal mod to run on top of Renaissance Mod - calling it Baroque, naturally. I am finding there's a lot of glitches in the editor, but converting the XR files to XML, modifying those carefully and converting back to XR works really well. I was able to incorporate the "varied starting worlds" mod into this already and have made a ton of tweaks. The biggest issue of course is that Renaissance has hit all the buffer limits :) (perks, improvements, actions, spells, etc).
JusticeForApples Jun 24 @ 12:39am
The mod is alright. I did encounter only one crash. Not bad. I enjoy the new races.
Askarus Jun 15 @ 5:28am
Even if the update is a small one, even if I have not played this game for a while, huge Thank You for your ongoing maintenance.

It feels so good, knowing that I have Warlock Renaissance in my game library. At some point I'll need to once again set up proper gamepad controls for this game and play it on my handheld. It worked pretty well last time.
Chumley  [author] May 28 @ 12:12pm
Hey all -- there's a new patch out for Renaissance Mod! Nothing too major... just small balance tweaks and improvements. Check out the details here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/changelog/493257789

Enjoy!

I haven't played this in a looooong time. I might need to fire it up sometime soon.
Chumley  [author] Apr 1 @ 6:03pm
Yeah, I've had good luck with 6-AI solo games on the largest map sizes. With 8, I tend to get that same array error. Much less so with 6.
Oak Apr 1 @ 12:06pm
Yes, this is my ultimate "come back and play" game when I am in between season releases of other games I want to play (I rotate all the big title AARPGS - D4, POEs, Last Epoch). Did some more 8 player - ran into the array error again around turn 156 of my next good start. Just too risky to play too many AI on impossible huge maps it seems. I will stick to 1v1 I think.
Chumley  [author] Mar 30 @ 11:09am
@Oak - So glad the mod is still providing great thrills! I continue to enjoy it myself. :-D
Oak Mar 28 @ 6:55am
Started doing 8 player games risking the dreaded late game crashes. Going against the 7 hardest AI. The challenge is fantastic, lost a bunch in a row until I finally managed to kill a ton of invaders right at my capital (with 7 evil impossible AI players you will be invaded quickly every time) and then pushed back out slowly and surely. Luckily came out of elemental world near a corner which helped a ton. I had to make my army crazy elite with legendary heroes, maxxed out enchants and upgrades. Had to use infernals since they can create such a great economy and archdevils and fate witches are a great combo. Won on turn 200. It was really fun. Will try again now with another race!
Oak Mar 25 @ 12:49pm
Won pretty handily with Infernals. Infernal - Elemental World - Trader - Archon is a powerful combo. If you dont seed near AI when you come to the surface, Infernals grow fast and all their cities can pump great gold, mana, and research all at once which is super strong. I even won with finding the AI pretty early but they drove deep into my territory to come for my capital and I spammed units as they came and used fodder to slow them down and slowly overwhelmed them. Once their main army was defeated, it was just a matter of cleanup. They did make it to my capital so it was touch and go for a bit.
Oak Mar 24 @ 7:44am
Games remains a great challenge on Impossible Huge Map 1v1 versus the toughest AI wizards (the evil ones) even once you master it. If you seed near an AI and they find you in the first 100 turns, your basically toast. I have played about 5 straight now that when I come up from Elemental or Elven world the AI finds me almost right away (super annoying on a huge map with only 2 players). Even found me when I went right back into another elemental world to stay away from the surface (found my few units moving on surface to the other world). AI declared war immediately and smoked me. As always Chumley, thanks for this mod, this game is one of the most replayable of all time.
Oak Mar 18 @ 5:48am
Finally won with monsters - took 4 attempts and got a pretty perfect start on the fourth in a great elemental world and in a corner when I came up to surface with 2 more good portal worlds I took nearby to create an insanely strong base of operations. Spammed champions of grumgog and Call of Suzerain to get 4 of the best legendary heros (three with 3 range) and went right for the enemy capital. Dont really like the race though, so probably last time I do that. I tried another game against 3 AI and got the Array 6 itemsize 41 error again around turn 150. I think I have to sick to 1v1 on the big map to avoid that error. Maybe Ill try just 2 AI and see if it happens...
Oak Mar 10 @ 10:27am
Always come to this mod and game - too much fun not too. My new goal for this return is winning on the hardest possible settings with the Monster race. Their lack of elite ranged units and weake temple units makes them the hardest to win with imo so here I go! I typically go 1on1 with one of the hardest AI on XL impossible for the greatest challenge... Adding more AI can give you lucky wins if they target each other. On an XL map against the meanest AI lords, once they find, you better be ready because they will bring the house to destroy you.

Worth getting the dlcs for it.

Fantastic mod! I'm working on a video to feature it, and I'd love to talk with you @Chumley about the mod! Let me know what you think :shcscribe:

This mod is amazing. A while back, 2022, I followed your instructions in these comments from 2019 about how to make a copy of the Renaissance mod files so I could make my own version of the mod. Back then, I did it and it worked, but now I'd like to go an edit my version of the mod again.

Problem, I uninstalled the game at some point and I don't have my version of the mod anymore. So I followed the instructions from 2019 again and this time the .pack files downloaded by that site don't seem to have the data.xr, viewdata.xr, or locdata.xr files I need to rename to access the mod. Unpacking them seems to just produce a bunch of images from the game. Any advice?
Shrimppuff90 Oct 11, 2024 @ 10:05am
I managed to get around the bug by loading a save that was 40 turns back, but as for the original save, it's bricked, every time the turn ends it instantly crashes. Thanks for replying though, just wish the game was a bit more stable.
Chumley  [author] Oct 11, 2024 @ 7:49am
@Shrimppuff90 - Many array errors are native to the game and frequently occur without the mod installed. Though you may be able to work around the current issue you're facing. Take a look at these two help threads:

https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/493257789/1693788384145490738/

https://steamcommunity.com/app/205990/discussions/0/492378806387103897/

I do experience a crash or two in just about every game I play, though it's truly rare that a game is ruined because of a crash. Often reloading is enough, and when it's not, a workaround usually does the trick.
Shrimppuff90 Oct 11, 2024 @ 7:43am
So seems like this mod now causes an error array to occur pretty frequently. Now can't get one of my games past turn 99 crashing
Oak Sep 22, 2024 @ 6:07pm
I got the array error yet again. This time definitely not perks. I checked everything and I think it must have something to do with dremer and contaminated lands. Its the only thing I can think of unless my games just cant go past turn 157 or so. Sucks too because I actually got a Dremer World start game going and had a chance to win even though it took me 112 turns to bust out of the Dremer World finally. Damn. Deflating... debating whether to take another break or play a new challenge...
Oak Sep 20, 2024 @ 12:35pm
Oh and I tried Dremer World start. That is insanely hard. You should get bonus points for that like Hubris. I am not sure I could win a game with any race with Dremer world start....
Oak Sep 20, 2024 @ 12:33pm
Was on my way to winning with Dremer when I got the array error crash again. Maybe too many perks? Dunno, but I was in cleanup mode. I like taking SSs of my wins, so didnt get to do that sadly. Dremer is pretty bland to play, the economy really just supports getting 4 mega heroes and supporting them with as many Throwers as you can handle and still have mana left... You have to stay aggressive. I used Elven World and Old Orb, was a very good combo for Dremer.
Oak Sep 19, 2024 @ 9:28am
@Atari - Dremer are meant to be a challenge economy wise. You can use workers to counter the spreading rot as the rot drains gold and food. I suggest building cities right away and building the basic gold, mana, and food building right away. Then depending on what is in the city's range, focus to that (big gold node, big food node, big mana node etc). Get Dremer Throwers going early to expand and build whats needed to support that. I was going great in my game I just tried then ran into 2 shadow dragon nodes spitting out shadow dragons and had to quit. I will try again.
Oak Sep 19, 2024 @ 6:28am
I continue to fail as Monsters. They could really use some buffs! I took a break at failing that to do an impossible 3 hardest AI game with planestriders and won on first attempt. I built a archer building in every city, went old orb and glorious tactician and spammed archers who then hit pretty hard and can move 5 spaces to rapidly expand and take portal worlds. Then I settled in and spammed sorcerors who have high move and health on top of being ranged, and they are pretty OP. I rolled over everyone. @Atari - I havent done Dremers in awhile. Will try and get back to you.
Oak Sep 11, 2024 @ 7:56am
@CVR - that is what happens when you hit max saves. Just delete all your saves and you will be fine again.
tellville Sep 10, 2024 @ 11:08pm
Is there anywhere or anyway else one can see YouTuber DasTactic's Renaissance Mod Let's Play? It seems to have been deleted from his channel.
hottt3 Aug 26, 2024 @ 2:30am
@CvR I vaguely remember that this game doesn't support too many save files. After a certain amount of saves it won't save the the game any longer. And this is the issue of the game itself, not of this mod. (If I'm not mistaken).
TRON Aug 25, 2024 @ 12:44pm
Don't get too many (20+) perks on one unit. That will break your game.
You can also check out other bugs in the pinned discussion
CvR Aug 23, 2024 @ 12:48pm
Hey everybody, in multiplayer we encoutered the problem that the game didn't load any longer. After around 70~ rounds it was not longer possible to safe and, when loading the auto-safe, it went 10 rounds back. Did you experience something similar? Is ist because of the mod?
Atari 2600 Aug 18, 2024 @ 1:00pm
Can someone help me understand Dremer overall building strategy? Their spreading contamination often ruins their own spells to improve their own lands for better resources, and also the lands of life that workers create. Seems counter-intuitive?
Chumley  [author] Aug 2, 2024 @ 2:03pm
@Brandon Cassius - You are correct. It is a back-end coding issue that, unfortunately, I am unable to fix. Luckily, it does at least apply one stack. So it's not 'unplayable' broken.
Yossarian Jul 28, 2024 @ 9:25pm
Legendary mod.
Brandon Cassius Jul 26, 2024 @ 12:52pm
This mod has a bug where the effect of the leader perk "Internationalist", which increases the population of other races' cities by 50, cannot stack with the effect of the spell "Prosperous Tidings", which also increases the population of other races' cities by 50. In other words, when both effects are present simultaneously, the population growth of other races' cities can only offset the game's original default -50 population growth, rather than achieving the expected net increase of 50 population growth.
Oak Jul 24, 2024 @ 12:53pm
So I won with the Humans on hardest conditions. They can clear elemental world quite well and quickly with their mages and have a nice economy when you build out the gold buildings and mana/research buildings in every town. Mages 3 range special ability is huge and archers of helia are OP. However, I have banging my head trying to win with Monsters against 3 other tough AI like Stoneheart, Baal, and Dremer. Monsters have weak economy (even with eleven world start), badly lacking range units (biggest weakness), and weak divine units. Werewolves die too easily. Back to it....
MeToLee Jul 19, 2024 @ 5:53am
Yes I didnt realize I had to activate it my bad. Thanks for the help though.
Chumley  [author] Jul 18, 2024 @ 12:28pm
@MeToLee - Sounds like you did everything right. Make sure you have the mod enabled. Click the "Mods" button on the left-hand side of the screen and tick the checkbox next to Renaissance Mod. After doing that, for good measure, exit the game and restart. It should load up -- you'll know it's working when you see options to play as the new factions (Sylvan Order, Infernals, and Dremers).
MeToLee Jul 18, 2024 @ 11:03am
I subscribed and dowloaded the bonus pack and I have all the DLC's but mod does not work. What am I doing wrong?
Oak Jul 8, 2024 @ 11:50am
Took me a few games to get warmed back up but just beat an XL Sandbox Impossible Map against Baal, Dremogog, and Stoneheart. Infernals starting in Elemental World with Trader and Intolerance is incredibly strong. The fire adepts handle clearing the elemental world really well (need elemental damage for fire, wind, and life elemental killing) and the infernal economy is bar none. They get great population growth and you can build every town to go all the way to cursed temple and all the way to Mint and get great gold/mana/research from every town that way. You will ultimately need 2 food towns (every city should make 1 until you get your food going). Focus on a combo of fate witches, nightwalkers, and dementors once you unlock them (otherwise spam fire adepts and get 1 town with archdevils) and rule the world. Really really powerful.
Oak Jun 28, 2024 @ 10:21am
Also, I see someone in the comments mentioning Sylvans are weak. This blows my mind a bit as I beileve they are by far the strongest race. You simply spam Elven Archers and nothing else, build your economy to support making as many as you can, and dominate all at the hardest difficulties.... One tip is to make all your support cities (ones that dont count to city limit) as holy cities for the mana. You will need that mana more than food or gold. They hit hard, move well, upgrade great, and have enough HPs to survive things like AOE spells and most single hits. If you group them up together and move them together, their counterattack support hits are huge as well.
Oak Jun 28, 2024 @ 10:21am
Hey Chumley - doing some playing again. Always love coming back to this game. Started up a 8 player XL Impossible map with the 8 hardest opponents and was doing well but ran into a "Array<6, 6, itemsize=41>:overflow 7 of 6" error on turn 145 I cant get past. First time running into this error. Is this a known error? Not sure what is causing it....
