Extract this mod and take a look at the contents, it'll give you a pretty good idea of how to do it. Bunch of files declaring the items, properties, & textures used + the 3d models and audio effects.
1: Go to wherever steam downloaded the mod, usually your steamapps workshop folder and look for a folder named /341674761
2: Inside that folder will be a .bin file of the mod that steam downloaded. Make a folder on your desktop and COPY the .bin over to it
3: Extract the .bin using 7zip
4: That will make a bunch of stuff appear, go to data/BLUEPRINTCLASSESSGAAO.sbc
5: Open it with any text editor, Notepad worked for me
6: Change
<Entry Class="Tools" BlueprintSubtypeId="AssaultRifleGun" />
to
<Entry Class="EliteTools" BlueprintSubtypeId="AssaultRifleGun" />
For every gun, then save and exit the file
7: Drag and drop this folder to %appdata%/Roaming/SpaceEngineers/Mods
8: Enable it in-game
The mod uses models and textures which Keen originally designed. They are distributed with the Mod API by Keen.
@Dezerker: Updating them to get them to work should be relatively easy. As for quality issues, that's on Keen. New textures could be designed, but that takes time and not every modder is good with textures. Feel free to give it a go yourself, should you feel so compelled. Updating mods isn't *too* difficult. Just compare the weapons.sbc file with whats in this one. Add in the settings which are missing.
Texture updates require a bit more finess. Shaosoul did a video series that can walk you through it.
