I originally added a mask but it worked perfectly with those mods without it, so I took it out. possibly they changed something that needs it to be added again

Doesn't seem to work properly for me? The inner ear is still hair-colored. I have Better Gene Graphics Framework and Vanilla Expanded Framework installed, also tried with only one or the other and neither but it never seems to work.

Thanks for the 1.6 update! :steamhappy:

Thank you so much for this! It's more required than wall lights.
Holgast  [author] Apr 27, 2024 @ 3:20am
It's working now. I had overlooked something minor with the loadfolders. :P
Holgast  [author] Apr 13, 2024 @ 8:34pm
ok, so it looks like it's tied to them rewriting the pawn rendering in 1.5 full release. I've rewritten the patch but it doesn't seem to be working right now. FUN
Holgast  [author] Apr 11, 2024 @ 2:09pm
darn...well, something was bound to happen 😂
IPN Apr 11, 2024 @ 1:59pm
Hello! Just letting you know that Rimworld Anomaly seems to have changed how the cat ears genedef works. This mod is listed as working for 1.5 but throws errors when enabled.
Holgast  [author] Dec 1, 2022 @ 5:24am
just found out that character editor also adds a shader. so if you are using that, that would explain why you don't need to also use the VE shader ;P
Holgast  [author] Nov 22, 2022 @ 1:25am
Both VEF and Better Gene Graphics Framework should do the same thing so you don't need to use both
Katieclysm Nov 21, 2022 @ 5:12pm
Ok, so to clarify, if I have this and VEF, no need to worry about anything else? Does Better Gene Graphics Framework do anything for cat ears now?
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:20pm
Alternatively, maybe because I already disabled skin shader waaay back in the comments, it auto turns on the other shader that I was trying to enable with the patch. I guess it doesn't matter why, if it works without needing to add a patch that's great.
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:18pm
To explain further, while I didn't change the actual graphic of the ears, I basically added an extra mask file that says 'add only half transparency to the inner ear' but that can't work by itself; it needs another mod that adds a shader that'll interpret that file.
In the update before I had to disable the VE patch, the patch was using VE's shader to apply that transparency, which specifically needs to be enabled in a patch (at least according to their wiki). But if it works without that extra bit, and you're not using any other mod that enables this, maybe the wiki's wrong and it's enabled by default or something? 🤷🏼‍♀️
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:10pm
I removed the VEF integration in the last update, so it now should do nothing additional. What it used to do was add the shader to the gene, which links into the mask graphics I added. If you are also using Facial Animation like the other user that reported issues, that mod has its own shader, so it might be automatically hooking into that. I can't imagine that VEF by itself is also automatically hooking into the mask if I didn't specify a shader to use, but it may be doing so.
Talesin Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:36am
Well i tried all 3 options, This mod only changes the ears to hair color.
This mod + VEF now changes it even more.
VEF only makes them look silly skincolored as vanilla.

So is it possible that when you added the VEF code, you just made it double since its allready integrated in VEF?
Seeing how this mod + VEF actually work together to change the ears.
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:29am
Weird, I didn't change the texture! oh well as long as it works
Talesin Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:28am
Ok so i unsubbed both mods and redownloaded them.
Now its all working ok yeah.
Actually i notice the ears got changed to look better now?
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:26am
sorry, I was referring to the animated portraits, which it seems like is facial animation, I got the same portrait error popup as Talesin when I was testing it with the patch on. I think their shader is clashing with VE's
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:22am
is it working again with the update? I removed the VE patch so it's just back to being a basic retexture if you aren't using better gene graphics framework
Talesin Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:20am
Ehm no. Portraits at the top of the screen is vanilla?
You can toggle them off though, so maybe you haven't seen the option in bottom right?
However its affected by any mod that changes anything to the character.
BUT, its only the characters with cat ears that gets affected by them dissapearing.
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:07am
...I just realised you are both talking about portraits and not the actual character sprites. Hence why I didn't get this issue, I don't use portraits. So it's whatever mod adds the portraits? is that facial animation?
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:05am
please redownload, I've just removed the VE patch so it should work as before. Also, it seems like there were some VE updates, they may have fixed whatever it was if you want to force update VEF
Talesin Nov 17, 2022 @ 4:04am
I tried what Halbara said.
Without Character editor there was no change at all.
But the portrait would return when i went into character editor with the character.

Weirdest part: i played abit without VEF. Loading that file with VEF, only 1 characters portrait dissapears???Still gets the errors though.
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:59am
Ok, I've just removed the VE patch, so it should work as before now. I may never figure out what the clash was with :P
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:51am
Oh well, I'll just either make the patch optional or comment it out for the time being.
Haibara Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:50am
I started the save without Character Editor now, but it's the same issue :/
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:36am
but in any case, I didn't have any issues with just this and VE on, so I think it's another mod clashing
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:35am
I wonder if it's Character Editor? I could see if I could make it an opt-in patch
Holgast  [author] Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:34am
yeah I think maaaybe another mod is causing problems if you have a gene shader on. not sure if I'll be able to figure it out
Haibara Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:11am
I actually came across a similiar issue as Talesin.
I didn't see en error (neither about Vanilla Genes (I don't use the mod anyway) nor about this mod here), but yesterday my colonist protraits started to appear invisible sometimes. It would either fix itself after a few seconds or I would open Character Editor menu and it would be fixed. Not game-breaking, but a bit annoying. There were only like four mods updated since the last time I played on the previous day.

So today I saw these comments here and switched this mod out with "Cuter Biotech Cat/Dog Ear Replacer" mod and the protraits are completely normal again.
I also tried loading my save without VE Framework (and all mods depending on it) as Talesin suggested, but it just gives me a black map and is unplayable.

I'm not saying this mod here has issues, but maybe it's a combination with a different mod that makes things weirdly funky.
Talesin Nov 16, 2022 @ 3:05pm
Added the 2 types of errors i get in the discussion part.
By removing Vanilla framework expanded i did not get any issues btw.
Holgast  [author] Nov 16, 2022 @ 1:52pm
If you think it is a conflict with VE, you could delete the VE patch in the Patches folder
Holgast  [author] Nov 16, 2022 @ 1:50pm
Just run another test and not having the same issue - there's an error on load but no issue with the graphics. Can you let me know which other mods you are using?
Holgast  [author] Nov 16, 2022 @ 1:37pm
I added a shader a couple days ago using VE's gene shader system. But I did test it then and it worked.
Talesin Nov 16, 2022 @ 7:40am
So loaded my game today and got errors and the picture of all colonists with cat ears was missing.
Apparently Vanilla Expanded Framework and this mod doesn't work together anymore.
Not sure if i'm missing something seeing how you mention said mod, but i couldn't find any options that would fix this issue.
Holgast  [author] Nov 15, 2022 @ 3:21am
Just added a shader for users of Better Gene Graphics Framework or Vanilla Expanded Framework! The ears now look much better on dark brown hair, which before was not very visible.

It doesn't look as good on white hair any more, but you can just delete the patch if it affects your favourite character too much.
Holgast  [author] Nov 10, 2022 @ 4:22am
I'm aware of the drama with Neronix, but good call on that, I guess I could use either one
RutraNickers Nov 10, 2022 @ 3:50am
Before that, go give a look at Better Gene Graphics Framework. Long story short: VEF team kinda stole their code for a time and, after getting caught, removed the guy that stole it from their ranks and apparently rewrote things from scratch.

Holgast  [author] Nov 10, 2022 @ 3:24am
ooooh, VEF just published an update that allows you to use masks on genes...maybe I'll add it as a VEF toggleable patch?
Holgast  [author] Oct 24, 2022 @ 2:13pm
yes, they are called floppy ears
RutraNickers Oct 24, 2022 @ 9:14am
The floopy ears you mean the vanilla dog ears?
Holgast  [author] Oct 23, 2022 @ 4:37pm
Cheers, I've added it now. Completely forgot about testing that after work
Holgast  [author] Oct 23, 2022 @ 4:25pm
Ooooh, that does look much better. I'll add it in then.

Fixed the ears myself by just adding what @Chris_ said

Should be fine.
ᚢᛁᚱᛁ Oct 23, 2022 @ 7:41am
Is it safe to add it midgame ?
《ELIF_》 Oct 23, 2022 @ 6:28am
Love it, also please do the suggested fix, its true that the ears still have this orange tinge to them, because both the hair color and skin color are being multiplied together.
Holgast  [author] Oct 23, 2022 @ 4:14am
Oh, I like it! You made the ears part of the hair.
