For those confused as i was, its not one rail yard in the image, its two back to back to look like one yard. One is set for empties and one for loaded. You use a direct train line and set each stop to load or unload the cars at each station.

@primetime_29 Hi, how do you do that? I bought several types of cars but when I use a locomotive to load them, the only options I have is to either load new cars or old cars. I don't get option to pick up certain type.

And other problem I have, that the locomotive always loads full station length of cars, which is not always convenient.

Love the concept but I'm guessing a recent update drastically reduced the speed of attaching and detaching wagons. I've tinkered with the script but none of the variables affect it. :(

Something cool I found: The new update allows you to load and unload specific boxcars making it very easy to transfer cargo from branch lines to main lines.

Does this just work as a normal rail distribution yard or it's just for this confusing car-storage thing I don't understand?

Trying to assign loco from Empty Yard to Full Yard (and vice-versa) says "This building is incompatible".. Stuck

Brilliant idea and looks to be well executed but the images are so unhelpful.
It's just the same view of the finished product, so it's so difficult (impossible) to see how the different parts fit and interact together.
The video clip doesn't show a complete cycle on short area clip and nobody thought to turn off the day/night cycle on the long one, so you can't see a thing most of the time.
What is that "building" the mainline trains are pausing at? It's impossible to see because it's obscured by trucks, but there is no mention in the train's schedule of anything other the distribution storage yard..
It would be far easier if there were pics of different stages of the build - or at the very least show the layout from both ends..
These pics just do not seem to match the items - and I can see from comments that I'm apparently not the only one with similar thoughts.
I've searched youtube for a decent guide without success. If anyone knows of one please post the link here.

To increase number of locos/wagons, modify the file building.ini file in the mod folder.

$WORKING_VEHICLES_NEEDED 5 - sets maximum number of locos available to 5.

$STORAGE RESOURCE_TRANSPORT_VEHICLES 150.00 - sets maximum number of wagons (it is capped however by the storage itself, for small yard)

$STORAGE_FUEL RESOURCE_TRANSPORT_OIL 150 - adds fuel so you can refuel your trains.

@Labby, I've made some tests and found a way to limit output train size without changing rail layout and building size.
The game always uses first CONNECTION_RAIL_ALLOWPASS length. So, it is possible to add a "fake" line within the building prior to real lines. In such case connection marks are displayed, but you cannot connect to them and should consider them as decorations.
I can share ini-files for 80m (size of train station/medium custom) and 140m (size of coal loading station). Would you like to add those in this mode?

This mod doesn't work. The trains wont pick up any cars. It's stupid!

Any tips and tricks to line these up easily? Feels like a guessing game to me. But other than that, adore this mod. Realistic train behaviours ahoy!

Is it possible to make versions of these yards that are even smaller or at least have shorter station tracks? Ideally versions that would limit trains to having either one, two, three, or even four or five cars that way industrial areas can have realistically short spurs and sidings with much shorter trains and a variety of freight cars. I've tried looking into making something myself but I really don't know what I'm doing once I start digging into coding and files and the in-game building editor doesn't have the option to make your own rail DO and I have no clue how you added the non station track rails and get the rail cars to sit on them.

Maybe a stupid Question, but... if one places two of them back to back to create a nearly realistic shunting yard, how can on connect the rail tracks? I mean, there are only 2 rail tracks to snap on track, but what with the other six?

@|KoX|--87-- Unfortunately the offsets of the resource visualization (the wagons here) break if you mirror the building using T. It happens to the vanilla rail distribution office as well.

Yuri: correct. for it to work right, you need one for local trains to pick up cars - which is where outgoing trains drop off cars.. and a second one the other way around. I recommend playing around this mod a little in a Sandbox game before trying to do it on your main-save to get the feel for it.

I did it like the pictures show but its sad they just stop there unload and retake the same ones they just dropped off and its frustrating to test out and nothing works

Fine! I am glad that you are doing the code on the railway without electrification. I'm doing something similar, but like a marshalling yard, with a tower. Perhaps by mirroring the code you will get a good marshalling yard!:steamthumbsup:

Unfortunately there's no real way to control the length of the trains other than the length of the station tracks. This one is set up for around 150m, same as the default rail distribution office and depot. The big version would be 450m like the long depot.

For everyone asking, I'm already planning on making a big version, that's why this one has "small" in the name. Other variations are a possibility too, but I'm focusing on the big one for now.

11 hoppers is really short for freight train. Idea to place two back to back with little offset is brilliant way to hide those cut off waiting tracks of vanilla RDO, but could you make 3 times longer version as complete railway with decorative juctions on both ends? Would be humungous and require flat map to place, but would allow to form 20+ wagons trains.

Great mod! I know i'm pushing it a bit but... is there a chance that you could make a early 1900's version of it with a wooden shed and a dirt road access?

@Gladi aka letsgo2u Added an example image of one way to do the route setup and an explanation in the description. You load or unload "trains" at the storage yard to pickup or leave cars there.
