Is this mod still up to date ?
Agraza Dec 22, 2021 @ 9:32pm
would you consider creating a patch for sos2 to give their insects chitin if vfei and/or alpha animals is running?
Xurker Sep 4, 2021 @ 4:47am
@stevezero hello, great mod first of all, second of all can chitin weapons be smelted? im finding that metallic chitin doesnt let you smelt it

Okay, so I am a bit confused and I just want to understand this Mod more clearly.

1. Insect Chitin, which is a type of Leather, is dropped by Alpha Animals Insects and, using a Mod, from Vanilla rendition Insects. It is kept in this Mod.

2. Building Chitin, which is a type of Metal, is dropped by certain VFE Insects when they are Butchered. You can also now shear an Iron Beetle to get it as a renewable resource, but it is still possible to get it the normal way.

3. Butchering Insects now produces less of all types of Chitin.

Do I have this correct?

Building Chitin is extremely rare ; I have only seen a Large Infestation once, which gave me several hundred units of Building Chitin. I do not believe the rate at which it is dropped after you butcher Insects with Building Chitin should be adjusted.

would this be compatible with https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2045595134? if it isnt is it possible for it to be?

Patch patched: errors caused by latest Alpha Animals update fixed.

@ec#2718, Yeah these two are incompatible since Optimized Leather - Alpha Animals (OLAA) removes hardened chitin from the game (that's why there is an error thrown with these two mods active). Other than me rewiring my whole patch, the simplest fix would be to ask that mod's author for compatibility with this patch. They would only need to conditionally check if this mod is not active before deleting hardened chitin.

It'd be really nice if this could override "Optimized Leather - Alpha Animals"; it's wonderful to slim down all the modded types of leathers, but I think your mod here does add actual value and variety and sanity to chitin, so I kinda want to use it as well!

@Deeds426 market value will determine how often you see chitin stuff. Raiders have an "allowance" to spend on gear. So if a chitin axe is cheap, it shows up often. Market value is determined by material amount, cost of that material, and work to make. I believe commonality of the material also plays a role there. Chitin from the VFE insectoid mod has a high commonality.
Deeds426 Apr 9, 2021 @ 11:17am
Question. How does this effect the vikings mod? I have thought about messing with all the chitins from the mods mentioned in you description because it was confusing and redundant and in my mind should have worked differently as far as uses and stats. So i did tweak the defs of those mods but I am still getting 60 viking warriors in a raid carrying "chitin" seaxes. So i am wondering how this mod would effect the factions arms and armor? If I buff the VFE insectoid chitin or nerf it I am thinking it would effect the viking raid balance.
UltraDelux Mar 13, 2021 @ 10:52am
ha that's awesome, thanks. i wrote that after i had been staring at my screen for so long, scouring the internet for some info on how i might fix my perceived issues, that i wasn't even sure i was making any sense at all. guess it does. anyways i cruised through the vfe insectoids comments and found a number of people who thought the same thing about the "commonality" of the stuff being way too high. any other issues i've had seem like they are addressed with this patch you've made. especially the black hole black chitin. i'd just sell the stuff because i couldn't bear to look at it. anyways (again) i haven't actually tried the patch yet but i'm looking forward to your update. thanks
SteveZero  [author] Mar 12, 2021 @ 7:07pm
@UltraDelux yup. I've been thinking of rebalancing vfe chitin for a while by reducing commonality, but making it stronger to make ironhusk beetles more valuable to have around. Now that you've brought it up, I will patch this weekend ;)
UltraDelux Mar 12, 2021 @ 4:59pm
my biggest gripe is how many items made from vfe chitin show up in vendor inventories. has anyone else here noticed this? is it possible this could be addressed too? seems like you'd be the one to know how. personally i imagine chitin to be a little better than steel but certainly no better than plasteel as far as weapons and armor go... but i just want to stop seeing traders with so many things made from the stuff
SteveZero  [author] Feb 14, 2021 @ 9:38pm
hey nick, no that's not meant to happen. I tried to replicate with a 11 day old megaspider from a larvae and it dropped regular chitin. If its happening consistently could be a mod conflict.
123nick Feb 14, 2021 @ 2:04pm
i butchered a juvenile megaspider and got 3 kinds of chitin, is that intentional? its just a normal megaspider aged 11 days. https://i.vgy.me/ZO5ntW.png
Kippy Feb 5, 2021 @ 11:57pm
Ah okay, thank you! I much prefer your chitin over theirs so I think I'll use this mod instead.
SteveZero  [author] Feb 5, 2021 @ 6:25pm
@kippy, as long as you have VFEI and AA installed, the patch should also apply to other mods if they're based off vanilla insects instead of animals. Some mods have insect looking creatures that aren't classified as insects. This would only be the case with regular chitin though as hardened chitin would required a closer look per mod. So it does have some compatibility with other mods, just not tailored.
"Insects have chitin" is more of an alternative to this patch. The author there goes differently by simplifying down all chitin to one type, where I'm more aligned with keeping multiple tiers of chitin without overlap.

SteveZero  [author] Feb 5, 2021 @ 6:12pm
@Fluffysminion, no sorry I don't play with that mod. I'll check it out.
Kippy Feb 5, 2021 @ 8:00am
I can think of a number of chitin-bearing animals from other mods. Have you considered adding compatibility to other mods? Or, as an alternate route of applying your system to applicable insects, have you considered compatibility with Insects Have Chitin ?
Fluffysminion Feb 3, 2021 @ 8:33am
This is a neat idea! Have you thought of tiding up the Morrowrim chitin types as well?
adobo Feb 1, 2021 @ 8:39pm
I don't think chitin being a "cheap" alternative to steel with how hard it is to get unless you have a massive milkbeetle farm. At best, it should be an alternative steel source to smelt since steel is needed more for other things.

It's not exactly cost efficient to use chitin in place of stone unless you need a strong wall somewhere. Stone walls IS useless for defense purposes since Vanilla Expanded has reinforced walls.
SteveZero  [author] Feb 1, 2021 @ 8:15pm
@majikero yes, hardened chitin is from raptor shrimps (also sand prowler and blood shrimp to be exact), but the same could be said about iron chitin. Iron chitin is from ironhusk beetles. Furthermore, iron chitin stat-wise was the same as hardened chitin, except for sharp where it had a 5% difference. Which when computed to apparel it made little difference. So I simplified it, "hardened chitin" made more sense as for something that you can craft apparel with.

Iron chitin to me seemed like it should be a metal type, which is what VFE was going for with their chitin. So replacing one with the other seemed fitting.

drops rates have indeed been nerfed for all insects. Missed that in description.
SteveZero  [author] Feb 1, 2021 @ 8:15pm
@majikero Been thinking the same about blunt, I'll make an update for it. Though I still think the insulation needs to remain lower than leathers. Without patch, Black chitin is as good as an insulator as plainleather at 14C (pl is 16C), largely any difference in overall insulation when combined with other clothing. The original mod values make other chitin insulation as good as the bad leather insulators. I made it worse than all leathers as otherwise there would be little to offset how much better it is in combat than leathers, and how much easier it is to obtain than leathers.
SteveZero  [author] Feb 1, 2021 @ 8:14pm
@majikero, yes you're correct about steel vs. VFE chitin from a crafting perspective, but imo the double HP was unbalanced in regards to other building materials. It essentially made stone walls useless. So I nerfed it down in all aspects so it fits as a cheap alternative to steel. For crafting its better than stone or wood and for building walls and such is much like steel.
adobo Jan 30, 2021 @ 7:34pm
Chitin from VFE has 92% sharp armor over steel's 90% sharp armor. Blunt and heat is lower than steel. Not exactly overpowered. It's HP is double though but defense-wise, its not really all that better than steel. It does have higher weapon modifier than plasteel.

Black Chitin is better defensive overall but thrumbofur is still king in sharpness. It already has lower temperature modifier. Honestly, the other chitins should have higher blunt defense than leather.

Hardened Chitin is from raptor shrimps. This is totally different.

So all the changes and reasons for them are a bit questionable.

Alpha Animals insect chitin level is Insect Chitin < Iron Chitn < Black Chitin. Hardened Chitin is from a different animal.

If your going to nerf black chitin, its better to nerf its drop since a single black insect raid can net thousands of them.
