I usually design to meet a particular need when I'm playing survival (as opposed to just designing something for no real reason). I always ask myself how I can do something with less, so my designs tend to be pedestrian. I choose function over form every time, but try to make stuff at least look a bit appealing. I, too, love this game. Sure, it's got issues, but so does the real engineering world. Half the fun is figuring out a work-around that still gets the job done.
