This map is quite impressive, especially for nations who want caves. Highlands and mountain regions are a tad rare so far as I've noticed though.

I think about 10-14 for land nation gives a decent amount of space. You should run into the enemy after taking 10 or so provinces at those numbers. All start positions are connected by land. I normally play with 12 players. 1-3 for cave nations as the caves are no start in the middle. Perhaps, 3-4 water nations?
