I believe the pit is just a well for water, not meant to be an execution device. The reason this is significant is because the Persians demanded offerings of earth and water to symbolize a conquered enemy's submission. When the Persian emmisary was thrown down the well the statement is "Here is your earth and water."

and technicly the pit it is know as a a path into Tarturus the lowest point in Hades/the Underworld/Hell
