@Kurt Russell unfortunately that mod doesn't seem to allow unarmed hunting, only melee hunting with a weapon, so for anybody else wanting their colonists to hunt using natural weapons like claws and whatnot, we're stuck waiting on this one to update, or for the mod you linked to fix this oversight

Heyo, if the author believes they won't have a chance to update this to 1.4, could you please link the following mod:

Per the description: "New! There are options to enable melee hunting for various sizes of game (big, medium, or small) and to enable hunting predators (turned off by default). Note that your hunter's fight or flee setting will still apply when the hunted animal fights back."

Mod Error Checker throws an error on this mod. It will probably need recompiling against Rimworld 1.4 I think?

Yeah that was my problem too seems to not work for unarmed ? or if you have claws trough genes that dont work either i think has to be equipped melee weapon. I also noticed my hunters pretty often just stop hunting (mid fight) and try to go eat or rest or whatever while animal is still trying to kill them. Dont know if it has anything to do with mod but i dont remember this before :O

Mod works in 1.4 I checked using 10 mods and checked again with my list of 223 mods. Works fine as intended. Though I recommend to manually change your pawns encounter to danger from run to fight. As this allow pawns to fight instead of running when animals decide to attack back.
A small problem though is that if the animal decides to move it does have a delay response on moving towards the updated target's location.

Seems like someone will have to port this to 1.4
though it seems that had to happen for multiple versions for this mod. How hard would it be to just pop out a quick patch? Allowing melee fighters to hunt seems simple enough.

i dont have simple sidearms, and it used to work in th eearly game, but currently when my melee pawns try to hunt, they try to path, the pathing tool draws the line, the pawn twitches, then stops moving, i drafted them and put them near the animal, but they just stand there. this mid might have broken with the last 2 game updates, not sure, but it's odd and creepy.

I'm getting an issue where if a melee preferred pawn (From Simple Sidearms.) tries to go hunting, it lags the entire game for a moment and the pawn is stuck standing there, before it happens again a few moments later. It keeps doing this until I eventually fix it by making sure they're no longer assigned to hunting. Yes, Simple Sidearms compatibility is checked.

Bugged for me with a plasteel knife. Not running simple sidearms. Hunter will melee hunt, but he uses the knife as a blunt weapon - all bruises and cracks, no bleeding. When I draft and have him attack, he uses the knife properly - all cuts, all bleeding.

Does not seem to work with drafted hunt. I selected 3 "hunters", drafted them, took them out near huntable animals (that would have been shot at if they had rifles) and enabled drafted hunt. They just stood there until I forced them to attack stuff. I undrafted them, selected animals and selected hunt and they went right for them.

@Drgn! Netrve - I pushed up a fork and made a pull request into your github repo fixing the simple sidearms dependency. The author of Simple Sidearms updated their mod to use more fully-qualified names for their Extensions class, so it should be fixed once you merge it in.

Yeah this doesn't seem to recognize the new Simple Sidearms. There's a small warning in the console about how it can't find Simple Sidearms and support is disabled. It's likely to do with the latest versions of Simple Sidearms with the new UI.

Netrve Just a guess but it seems like Simple Sidearms has changed their settings menu, so that it is now unconfigured until the user choose which sorts of weapons can be sidearms(there was one related to melee but not sure what it does), and it gave me a little warning on the SS menu telling me to choose a setting preset when I loaded up a new colony. Not sure exactly how you'd go about patching it but the default preset that comes with the unconfigured mod settings might not allow melee anymore and you might need to make the check a bit more complex.

With the new simple sidearms update, HuM is giving a yellow warning saying simple sidearms is not being detected and support is disabled despite SS being loaded before it if it helps any. I'm using RimPy.

Hmm, I don't modify the game logic in regards to the hunting job.
What HUM does is that it extends the check which the job uses to verify that a pawn has a gun to report back "yes" if they have a melee weapon (if fist fighting is on, it always says yes). So any misbehavior with the job shouldn't be caused by HUM itself, but I will look into it.

This appears to conflict with mods called Legobricks and Heavy Melee Weapons. Hunters get stuck in a loop unable to start a hunting job with a melee weapon. Just a heads up for people looking for melee mods to go along with this. Sadly you can't use a plasma lance to incinerate herds of alpacas...

I got out of the habit of using this and now that I'm running a colony of mostly Melee Specialists I want to get back to my Persistence Hunting roots :3

The update has been pushed to Steam already. I have heard of issues regarding Steam not updating mods properly, so it might be worth trying to redownload it. Best way I know is using RimPy.

Is the pushed update going to be only Github for now or when will be the update for Steam? Since my Issue persists. Of course I could use the Github version but I attempt to keep my mod folder short. Have to say, great mod and helps if you go for a specific, non range theme.
