A new version of this mod is now available, "Generals and Admirals".

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3117516233 .

It was better to remake from scratch. Generals and Traits is now obsolete.

It's too bad this mod hasn't been updated, looks sweet.

Thanks coach

This mod is no longer being updated in its current form. The barbarossa update with No Step Back last year added a character system that requires a complete re-write of all the content. In addition, we are now looking at an Italy update and a division commander system and it's not clear how that will affect the characters. A new version of this mod is in the works. You can expect it probably a few months after the release of the Italy dlc so PDX can get all their updates out of their system. The next version will be better balanced and include more nations. I'll post more later in the Fall. Thanks.

does the AI get the same advantage or just the player?

@Coach Bud Kilmer You have still acces to your mod if u need help to get it write me pm.
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Jun 29, 2021 @ 7:03pm
This mod was last updated before BFTB, so it uses the old Turkey text file. The file is located in the mod folder in history\countries\TUR - Turkey.txt. This outdated text file is overwriting the newer file located in the main HOI4 files. You can rename or delete this text file in the mod folder and BFTB Turkey will be back to its normal release state.

Since the new launcher was created, I have been unable to update this mod. The Steam ID will not appear. So, there will have to be a completely new version made and posted to Steam.
801 TTS Airbats Jun 27, 2021 @ 3:51pm
so
i can unto you and this mod at the beginning of summer

when using the mod it removes all of Turkeys starting spirits (from BFTB, sectarian woes, kemalist officers, disorged army)
Im trying to figure out why, as its JUST THIS MOD that does this

Kinda confusing why (turkey is still perfectly playable, it just affects some of the gameplay that BFTB added to Turkey)
Cheetah (Star wing) Feb 2, 2021 @ 4:40am
Can i use this mod alon side the mod called "real traits"?
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Jan 25, 2021 @ 5:53pm
Turkey will be fixed. You can delete the Turkish text file and it should just use the default for now. I will see about adding Scandinavians.
Wrath_of_Janos Jan 25, 2021 @ 4:56am
Can you integrate the skandinavien countries?
Glacier_is_Capoo Jan 22, 2021 @ 5:32am
Oh I almost forgot, this mod will COMPLETELY SCREW TURKEY GAMEPLAY
That need to be fixed
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Jan 17, 2021 @ 5:18pm
I've got HOI4 back up and running and am testing the mod out for latest version. Needs a little love. I don't have the last two dlcs but shouldn't be a problem. Updated version should be ready soon. No admirals yet, but a little more balancing for general traits will be in order.
Glacier_is_Capoo Jan 15, 2021 @ 2:08am
Update?
Timmysoboy Sep 8, 2020 @ 9:32am
Looking at your mod, I'm guessing this information is in the 'Generals and Traits' doc, and is not something that someone with little programming experience could tackle.
Timmysoboy Sep 7, 2020 @ 9:13pm
How were you able to add new modifiers to general traits? I've only been able to work with existing ones (eg, army_artillery_attack_factor).
dolphette Sep 6, 2020 @ 4:42am
this mod is awesome! I have a quick question regarding trait-modding:
I know one reload command for the trait-window itself ("reload traittreecommonwindow.gui" or something like that) but it doesnt reload the traits themselves. If I add a trait I have to reload the game for it to appear in "Leader details". Do you know of any reload commands that solves this? Thanks in advance and I hope you dont mind me asking!
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Aug 28, 2020 @ 4:27pm
It could probably be done with scripting and decisions.
EndlessSauron Aug 7, 2020 @ 4:44pm
is there any way to add the ability to fire generals, field marshals and admirals?
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Jun 5, 2020 @ 6:38pm
Mod is not compatible with Expert AI because they both alter the 00_traits file, which is the main change.

Be advised my computer went tango uniform so there will be no further updates or developments until I can afford a new one, which may be quite a ways off. This include the 1.93 update.
jeep4 Jun 4, 2020 @ 5:47am
A heads-up, not working with new update 1.93... Otherwise a great mod before the new update.
Youricko Jun 2, 2020 @ 11:22pm
Unfortunately, this mod is not compatible with Expert AI.
panpiper May 13, 2020 @ 7:36am
You are a scholar and a gentleman, Sir.
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] May 12, 2020 @ 8:11am
1.92 is uploaded. Nothing changed at this time.

Panpiper, I just had that Rommel graphics glitch in a recent test game. His portrait changed to Balck when I promoted him to FM. After I promoted Balck, then he went back to normal. No idea what causes that.

No immediate plans for an update, but still would like to do admirals at some point, as well as Netherlands, Greece, and a couple of additional generals for majors. It's be cool to do something for air force generals, but no idea on how that could be programmed properly. Plus only Germany and U.S. have portraits.
panpiper Apr 20, 2020 @ 10:52pm
(1/2) WOOT! Ok, so I'm having fun. :-)

So I took Hermann Balck and put him in command of five "mechanized infantry" (26 width combo of light tanks & motorised with artillery). I sent them to Spain. (I cheated the quantity of forces I could send.) With that force of course, he blitzed through everything. When he came back he had reached third level with basic skills in the twos and threes, not to mention several bonus earned skills. I expect by the time he's gone through Poland, he'll be the equal of native Rommel or Guderian, except for the trouble, he'll also have all those extra bonus skills.
panpiper Apr 20, 2020 @ 10:52pm
(2/2) The issue now of course is how to get more generals progressing similarly. I think I might just game the game and stop my forces 'before' they take Paris. Pull them back at that point to Belgium. Switch out generals, and let them reach the outskirts of Paris before pulling back yet again. Rinse and repeat. Just imagine how much could be gained by doing the same with Moscow! Of course at that point, it's kinda redundant. ;-)

I know, not the way the game is 'supposed' to be played, but hey, it's my game. Your mod though... It great.
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Apr 20, 2020 @ 12:11pm
...
To answer your first question, the amount of units does increase experience. Compare von Manstein in Spain with two panzer and one motorized divisions versus Messe in Ethiopia, where he can have 24 divisions including 3 tank and 3 cavalry to gain all traits faster than anyone in the game. The amount of specialized units doesn't seem to make a difference in how those traits increase. For example, just having 3 tank divisions out of 24 (to make the 10% required) means you will gain the panzer leader experience even if those tanks aren't in combat yet. The threshold was lowered to 10% to obviate the need to put all your tanks in one army, and keep the option available to spread them around with infantry divisions as they were historically.

I'm not sure what the hell is going on with Balck and Rommel. I checked their portrait paths and didn't see any duplication. See if it still happens with the new version.
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Apr 20, 2020 @ 12:11pm
1.91 is up. Let me know if there are any issues as updating with this new system has become a real mess. No admirals at this time.

panpiper: Thanks very much and glad it is working for you. I think they really missed the boat with general progression. It could have been a much more interesting feature with guys progressing upwards from leading armies to army groups, then theaters, then becoming national advisors. Also, a slowly rising experience level could help, such as gaining terrain traits from moving through enemy terrain types and not just combat.

cont...
panpiper Apr 19, 2020 @ 6:08am
I've got an odd bug, though by no means game breaking. The portrait graphic of the German generals Hermann Balck and Erwin Rommel randomly flip each other;s portraits, such that each will have the portrait of the other. It's as if they were each sharing two different but identically named files and the game is randomly switching between which on to use. The random choice is made pretty much each time their portrait has an opportunity to appear on screen.
panpiper Apr 18, 2020 @ 8:01am
Marvelous mod. This really brings to life a feature that really did not work well for me, it worked so little that as a feature, it might as well not exist. In 300 hours of playing without this mod, I do not recall ever one of my generals gaining a single trait. Now they can and do. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Question unrelated to the mod specifically, though certainly directed towards ways to use it... Does it matter how many units a general commands in order to gain XP? Am I better off sticking each one of my mixed armor/infantry division with a separate general in order for all of them to progress, of will my generals progress faster with more divisions under their control?
Tanobi Apr 8, 2020 @ 3:07am
Coach Bud Kilmer

I'd apprecheate it much! A mod "all in one" would do it for me. If you would put a youtube video on how to do it, the community could help you out.
Luna Apr 7, 2020 @ 9:16am
plz update it to 1.9.1 :-)
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Apr 6, 2020 @ 7:34am
Interbastian: Honestly I think they dropped the ball on how generals and national advisors work. In HOI3 we had them becoming available on the first day of each year. In HOI4, they had the opportunity to make new generals available through a number of ways, such as focus trees, decisions, and national spirits. They could have made a system where you start with the old gaurd, and then access new talent throughout the game. It also would have been possible for dogs to learn new tricks as you described, as well as having a more balanced system for earning traits, which is what I tried to create with this mod. I would definitely support your idea to post it to the developers.

Tanobi: I've thought about it but haven't really looked into it yet. Maybe in the future. The admirals and generals are all part of the same text files so I'd either have to make it all-or-nothing or make multiple versions of the mod to do so.
Tanobi Apr 6, 2020 @ 5:11am
could u do a "admirals and traits" mod?
laceleste Apr 2, 2020 @ 11:31am
Those are all valid points Coach, I especially simpatize with the argument to keep the mod compatible with other mods as much as possible, perhaps I should take my suggestion to the game devs as I still think it's a sound idea. Good luck.
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Mar 29, 2020 @ 4:57pm
Interbastian, the only way I know how to do that is by scripting events or decisions, and I'm trying to stay away from that since I want to keep as much compatibility with other mods as possible. Another method would be to have a trait that requires the negative personality trait as a pre-requisite, but this would significantly alter the whole trait tree. And I've been trying to keep that tree as close to the original as possible without fundamentally altering the graphics or adding tons of new traits. But good food for thought and I will think about it.

If anyone has any requests to buff or nerf any of the traits in this mod, now's the time to post your suggestions. When I get some time after the release of 1.91 I will update this mod, so if there's changes you'd like to see (or not see) we will have time to discuss before release. Thanks.

Is it possible to fix game crash with Generals and Traits+Europe only mod?
Soldier311 Mar 20, 2020 @ 7:57am
the comment under this one seems awesome.
laceleste Mar 18, 2020 @ 6:15am
Hi Coach Bud Kilmer, interesting mod.
I have a suggestion, if I may, how about introducing the ability to train generals and field marshals not for new traits but for removing already existing bad ones.

For game balance I don't want to have op generals just ones that don't suck.
laceleste Mar 18, 2020 @ 6:12am
@Youricko it clearly is stated in the description i will be revisited after the 1.9.1 patch.
Right now 1.9.1 is only beta.

Youricko Mar 17, 2020 @ 2:25am
So, does this mod work with 1.9.1 or not?
gofastskatkat Mar 9, 2020 @ 6:36am
Alright, launched the game with just this mod, and the spy traits work. Time to go find which one is doing that.
gofastskatkat Mar 8, 2020 @ 7:37pm
As I said, I dont know if its this mod, because I took it out and still was having the same issue, bout to try playing with just this mod though
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Mar 8, 2020 @ 7:28pm
OK, thanks for letting me know. I'm not sure why the mod is not compatible with the new Spanish and spy traits. These traits are posted in the updated main files, which this mod is based on, which don't require LaR to work. Like you said, it's hard to see what else could be a problem without the DLC. I'm going to work on this when 1.91 drops and see if it's fixable.
gofastskatkat Mar 7, 2020 @ 6:00pm
Not 100% sure its this mod, but seems to make all the spies not have their traits, of course that'd probably mean that you would have to get LaR to fix. Just a heads up though
Coach Bud Kilmer  [author] Feb 27, 2020 @ 5:55pm
Thanks, Lazarikho. I can't tell what's causing that with LaR. The new Spanish loyalty traits are in the 00_traits file so that should be unaffected, and there's no Spanish generals added to the history files. We'll have to see but the mod may prove incompatible with LaR Spanish Civil War games.
Lasariko Feb 27, 2020 @ 9:32am
seems to not cause spanish generals to transfer correctly when civil war starts
