To make your image properly lightened you need to create an alpha channel that will be used as brightness map, where black is the brightest and white is the darkest. The most simple way to do so is to
- copy entire image with all RGB channels selected,
- create blank alpha channel and paste it there,
- invert this newly created channel.
After that export your dds file as usual.

On a side note, how did you convert these images? I'm trying to add a few posters from Prey into the game, but they end up looking very muddy and dark (unless lighted directly by the sun). It seems to have something to do with transparency, as transparent parts appear lighter. How did you add transparency based on lightness to these images? Just a simple photoshop filter or something?

Nice! I had the "Space Grand Tour" calendar last year and it had all of those pictures in it.
