Now what I can do - with your permission of course - is make an addition to the station, topside.
I'll add the hangar there and republish it, the latter happening ONLY with your permission, as "Space Station Freedom".
Regarding your statement of the Columbia disaster. One of the reasons they didn't dock with ISS was their different orbital inclinations, as well as the fact that the shuttle wasn't configured to dock with anything. No fuel, no capability. It's all speculation but it's reasonable to assume that the space Station Freedom would've been set in similar orbit owing to the science needs of the station so they would've been just as much out of luck there unfortunately.
So you're right. It wouldn't have been a hangar, it would have been more of a one-bay factory and "space drydock".
However, budget cuts reduced it to just another docking port.
So think of the hangar-equipped build as a "theoretical replica". A replica of Space Station Freedom, "as proposed" instead of "as built".
As an aside and meaning no disrespect, had the service bay been built as proposed, the brave crew of shuttle Columbia wouldn't have died as they could have repaired the shuttle before it started its' fatal descent and eventual breakup over my home state of Texas.
Speaking of the shuttle, check your page. I've posted some ideas on that beauty as well as the Mobile Launching Platform.
Gotta be a big one, something battleship-sized.
carbon fiber and the like
And, you could make another one that is more function over looks!
Just a thought though!
What about a connector block? I coupled the Orbiter to it and it looks nice!

This is brilliant! Thank you OctoMoose for making this awesome recreation.
Very authentic. Love the attention to detail. Great job!
Nice bit of real-world comparison here for anyone who's interested...
