No, they are entirely different, like France and England. Mali's culture split into a bunch of groups collectively know as the Mande and Songhai got split in half along the Mali-Niger border leading to the culture to become almost entirely gone, although it was in rapid decline before this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songhai_people#:~:text=The%20Songhai%20people%20%28also%20Ayneha%2C%20Songhay%20or%20Sonrai%29,western%20Sahel%20in%20the%2015th%20and%2016th%20century .

Mali:

Closest singe group is the Mandinka (notice how many countries they are split between):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandinka_people

The Ghana Empire was also a different culture than these two:

The Wassoulou Empire, the last precolonial powerful Empire was the same culture as Mali but a different country:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wassoulou_Empire

These cultures used to be a lot larger and more numerous, but following the collapse of Songhai, the groups diverged into a bunch of different groups leading to the division and strife in the regions today. Colonialism has made the situation nearly hopeless to overcome because the similar groups are split up across a bunch of countries and with dissimilar groups leading to constant discrimination which leads to war.

Isn't Mali similar to Songhai? Can someone please enlighten me on the difference?

@zipwip
Some people experience issues with the 3D leader which may be what's causing the crash. Read the note in the description above about switching to a static leader screen and see if that fixes the issue.

Crashes my game when I meet Mali, warning for anyone else.

Oml yes, just what I've been looking for. I love the Mali Empire from Civ 4.

Sofa directly upgrades to Gatling Gun instead of Skirmisher even with the Enlighthenment Era mod. Is this intentional?

@Tomatekh I also had a bug with great prophet, I couldn't use them to found a religion

Askia's voice startled me. That voice does not fit with that body

@JEELEN: I've had this issue occasionally with a variety of civs (iirc it was CL's Zapotecs and Tarcisio's Massagetae). My best guess is that something else was interacting badly with HR.
JEELEN Dec 27, 2017 @ 11:33am
@Tomatekh: Not that I'm aware of. (I only use Historical Religions.) Also, Sunni wasn't founded. My guess is they went off to find a Holy Site - none were in place yet. so they were basically just wandering around aimlessly.
Tomatekh  [author] Dec 27, 2017 @ 5:38am
Hmm, that usually happens if something erases a civ's religious preferences. Mali's should be set correctly, but I'll double check. Do you use any othere mods which might alter or delete religious preferences?
JEELEN Dec 26, 2017 @ 10:37pm
@Tomatekh: Not sure if it's important, but I noticed an oddity in my last game. Mali generated TWO great prophets and... used them as scouts. In doing so, they failed to found a religion. I've seen some odd AI behaviour, but this definitely ranks high.

It has served me well to stay clear of Civ mods that have brief mentions of bugs in the Comments sections. They will likely break your game (learned the hard way). But it's only fair to turn it around: I've played with this mod forever and with all kinds of set-ups (Community Balance Patch, etc). Never had a problem. Recommend.

Fun and functional, except for one oddity: Mansa Musa plays Askia's voice clips. I don't think it has to do with the 3D leaderhead either, since I'm using DX9 and 2D leaderheads anyway (on a weak laptop).

I know some people have been having problems due to the 3D leader head. Above in the description, under the notes section, there are instructions to switch to a static version of the leader image. If the problem persists, I would suggest checking if it still also occurs when using the static version.

Having an issue for some reason after first encountering Mali. I can meet them as normal and establish embassies, trade, discuss, etc, but after the conversation is over and the game has me resume my normal activities, my game freezes while moving the screen over to whichever unit is in need of orders. It's very bizarre, but it has happened two out of three times meeting them on the map. I'll try to recreate it a few more times to see if I can figure out exactly what is causing it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into make the civ feel less situational/start dependant next time I do an update.

Beginning to wrap of a game w/ Mali, among other mods. I really enjoyed the Sofa, initially, I didn't realize they were ranged, however they are very effective. I found a problem when I reached the treasuries: none of my cities had any Gold, Salt, or Silver. I had to settle a third city just so I could have the Gold. The start didn't particularly lend itself to the Mali. I think they have a powerful UA and UI, and, like Spain, are a bit of a gamble, if you get a good start you're golden, otherwise you're stuck with a sub-par civ. In spite of this, I recommend using the mod, if not just for the new AI.

v.50
-Mod compatibility update (EE; Cul Div; Cul Inf; Sovereignty; Mercenaries)

If you need the previous version (48) to continue a save, a download link is at the bottom of the description.
Tomatekh  [author] Sep 15, 2015 @ 3:13pm
@Morgaln
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the mod. They don't have a start bias for gold/silver per se, but do have a bias for the terrain those resources are most likely to spawn on
Morgaln Aug 21, 2015 @ 2:31pm
I've tested this mod this week, and I did like it a lot. It somewhat plays like a religion-focused version of Morocco, I think. Is there a start bias for gold/silver resources in the mod? I had at least six sources of gold near my capital (easily claimed with just three cities), and also some silver. That made the treasuries that much more useful and gave my faith an additional boost thanks to Religious Idols.
I didn't really have the opportunity to test the Sofa, since I never went to war, but they do sound very strong from their description. I'll play it again some other time and go a more aggressive route to see how they hold up to expectations.
Great work on this one.

The new update will break previous saves. If you need the previous version (41) to continue a save, a download link is at the bottom of the descrption.

Gameplay:
- Treasury Gold thresholds now scale x1, x2, x4 instead of x1, x2, x3.

Misc:
- Added YnAEMP v. 23, ExCE, and Unique Cultural Influence support.
- Added additional leader diplomacy lines.
- Touched up the UU icon.
- GA tooltip now gives better information regarding Treasury GA points

- Added a 2D leader alternative. To use the 2D leaderhead instead of the 3D leaderhead:

1) Locate your mods folder; (~/Documents/My Games/ Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Mods/Mali (Brave New World).
2) Directly in the Mali mod folder you should find two xml files: “Mali_Leader_Scene” and “Mali_Leader_Scene_Alt”.
3) Delete “Mali_Leader_Scene”.
4) Rename “Mali_Leader_Scene_Alt” to “Mali_Leader_Scene”.
Tomatekh  [author] Feb 4, 2015 @ 9:15pm
The Holy City can be of any religion. I originally would have liked it to be only Mali's religion, but, after some testing, limiting it in that way didn't really give much benefit within the game's religion system. And it's per building, so 600 gold with 5 treasuries will give you 15 GA points. It might be too strong, I'm not sure. Hopefully, I'll be able to adjust the balance better in the future after some more feedback.
Nkrumah Feb 4, 2015 @ 6:42pm
For the UA does the Holy City have to of the same Religon? Also thank you for making an Appropriate Mod for my Country! Sofa were the main componet of Malian Armies and you made an accurate representation of Musa's Pilgrammage. Also for the UB if you have 600 gold and a Treasury in 5 cities does that give you 3 or 15 Golden age points?
Tomatekh  [author] Jan 31, 2015 @ 8:58pm
Yes, and actually I've planned to add it in a while ago. I've just been too busy to sit down and make the update :/
Mister Molecule Jan 31, 2015 @ 8:47am
I feel silly asking you for more after you've improved my life so much, but are there plans to make a sans-animation version for those of us having problems?
Tomatekh  [author] Jan 29, 2015 @ 12:18pm
Thanks for the suggestion, but I am happy with the current balance of the mod.
Nkrumah Jan 21, 2015 @ 7:37pm
Seems a bit underpowered how about plus 2 Faith from Mints, Markets, and Banks; and Make the UU have March and/or Medic 2?

For some reason, if the AI plays as Mali, whenever I first meet them the game crashes. Happens every time.
