That "red thing" on his head you speak of is a particle effect that is part of his default scarf, I believe. I'd have to look at the sets I own for him to see if it's on all the others.
If it can't be removed, though, you coulld edit the earmuffs ("headphones") to make it look like it's a piece of cloth tied onto it.

UPDATE : I just checked him. The red ribbon is actually part of his helmet (my bad!), but while most of his sets have it, the Barrier Rogue set DOESN'T (at least on my end). I'll have to playtest that set in-game, though, since I only looked at him in the Loadout.
UPDATE #2: Just played a Turbo game as Tusk wearing Barrier Rogue (yay for that mode allowing Couriers now, BTW!), and he didn't have the ribbon in play. However, I made the weird discovery in Loadout afterwards that if I give him any fist weapon other than the Barrer Rogue cannon, the ribbon appears! Hmm... (My kingdom for an Edit Comment button, BTW!)
