Me-163B-1a / Komet

Description
A Brief History:

The Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet, designed by Alexander Lippisch, was a German rocket-powered fighter aircraft. It is the only rocket-powered fighter to have ever seen combat and the first piloted aircraft of any type to exceed 1000 km/h (621 mph) in level flight. Its design was revolutionary and its performance unprecedented. German test pilot Heini Dittmar reached 1,130 km/h (700 mph), an unofficial flight airspeed record unmatched by turbojet-powered aircraft for almost a decade. Over 300 aircraft were built, but the Komet proved ineffective in its dedicated role as an interceptor aircraft and was responsible for the destruction of only about nine to eighteen Allied aircraft against ten losses.

Following the initial combat trials of the Me-163B with EK 16, during the winter and spring of 1944 Major Wolfgang Späte formed the first dedicated Me-163 fighter wing, Jagdgeschwader 400 (JG 400), in Brandis near Leipzig. JG 400's purpose was to provide additional protection for the Leuna synthetic gasoline works which were raided frequently during almost all of 1944. A further group was stationed at Stargard near Stettin to protect the large synthetic fuel plant at Pölitz. Further defensive units of rocket fighters were planned for Berlin, the Ruhr, and the German Bight.

Establishing a defensive perimeter with anti-aircraft guns ensured that Allied fighters avoided these bases. At the end of 1944, 91 aircraft had been delivered to JG 400 but lack of fuel had kept most of them grounded. It was clear that the original plan for a huge network of Me-163 bases would never be realized. Up to that point, JG 400 had lost only six aircraft due to enemy action. Nine were lost to other causes, remarkably few for such a revolutionary and technically advanced aircraft. In the last days of the Third Reich the Me-163 was given up in favor of the more successful Me-262. In May 1945, Me-163 operations were stopped, the JG 400 disbanded, and many of its pilots sent to fly Me-262s. In any operational sense, the Komet had been a failure.

Known Issues:
  • Sometimes, at high speeds, the tail landing gear with snap off. For some reason this affects maneuverability. In order to fix it, switch to Cockpit Toolbar #3 and press #3 to add a new head to the hinge. If it happens to the piston, press #4 instead.

  • These craft feature only small ammounts of fuel. I suggest use of the "Hydrogen Revamped" mod to get better consumption rates. - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=689090005&searchtext=hydrogen+revamped

  • In order to get the most out of this plane's thrust package, I suggest a speed mod. Maximum level airspeed for this model (fully-loaded with ammunition) is approximately 350+m/s.

New and improved showcase world! The old testing world got over-written, so I went all out and built a brand new testing facility. Not only has the testing range been improved, but to mark the occasion, I present a new model as well; the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor F. Mk.III! Please un-sub from the old one and re-sub to the new one in order to continue receiving new models and world updates. Sorry for the inconvenience is causes.

The blast door corner inset mod is no longer required for this model.

As of now you will no longer need the Conveyor Hinges mod as the Plane Parts mod now incorporates hinge-style motors.
