Giant United States

Description
A giant map of the United States from 60 degrees W to 125 degrees W and from 25 degrees N to 50 degrees N. Now, you can get your Manifest Destiny fix on an insanely huge map.

Designed for BNW with G&K. Support for other versions is unintentional and not guaranteed. This map is MASSIVE and will cause lag for weaker computers. If you are using a weak computer, play the map in strategic view, but still expect really long turn times.

Features:

Accurately scaled Giant map (180 x 94) of the continental United States.

Navigable Mississippi (up to Minneanapolis), Ohio (up to Pittsburgh), Missouri (up to where the Yellowstone river splits off), and St. Lawrence rivers.

With 3 canal cities, you can connect Lake Superior all the way to the Atlantic. With a canal city on Baja California, you can connect the Gulf of California to the Pacific.

Natural wonders are included in their real-life locations (or fantasy locations, in the case of the Fountain of Youth). Krakatoa is used to represent Mt. St. Helens (don't mind the rendering issues that Civ V has with it), Lake Victoria represents part of the Great Salt Lake, Mt. Kailash represents Yosemite, Kilimanjaro represents Mt. Washington, and Gibraltar represents Acadia.

Resources and ancient ruins are all randomized. I might also include a version in the future with geographically accurate resource placement.

WARNING: Randomized resources can lead to sparsity of luxuries if the map is improperly loaded. Although it will generate resources as an activated mod, it does a much better job (i.e. more than 1 deposit of each strategic/luxury) if you just go in and move the .civ5map file to your maps folder. From there, load the map WITHOUT activating the mod, and you should see a much higher concentration of luxuries. If this doesn't work or you want more resources anyways, use Really Advanced Setup, found here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=126959669

Geographic inaccuracies included for balancing reasons:

The Baja California is only 1 tile wide (should be two) near its bottom so that a canal city can be constructed.

Lake St. Clair is directly connected to Lake Huron to allow a canal city to be constructed there.

Florida is a bit too short so that ships can pass into the Gulf of Mexico.

I would recommend playing this with more than 22 civs in order to fill it out. A good DLL for this that doesn't crash the game can be found here: http://www.picknmixmods.com/mods/CivV/DLL/Various%20Mod%20Components%20-%2034%20Civs.html#
WARNING: DLL mods only work on WIndows. Mac users will have to make do with only 22 civilizations.

I would also recommend using the Pontoon Bridge mod so you can build bridges across the Mississippi basin and St. Lawrence rivers, found here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=158739017&searchtext=pontoon+bridge

Finally, this mod works great with calcul8or's US state civilizations, found here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=243812420

In order find your IRL location on the map, get your coordinates in X degrees W, Y degrees N form.

Subtract 60 from your W coordinate, then divide by 65 and multiply by 180. Finally, subtract that value from 180 to get your X coordinate. In algebraic notation: 180 - (180 * (X-60)/65)

Subtract 25 from your N coordinate, then divide by 25 and multiply by 94 to get your Y coordinate. In algebraic notation: 94 * (X-25)/25

Now, you can either find that location in WorldBuilder or count X tiles from the left of your screen and Y tiles from the bottom to find your in-game location within about a 1-tile margin of error.

Note: Going 5 degrees W on this map is about 14 tiles, and going 5 degrees N is about 19 tiles.

Report any bugs (such as rivers missing a tile or the map not working) below. I will attempt to address them as best that I can.

You can also complain about the location of things like mountains, hills, features, or rivers below so that I can ignore you. It is almost impossible to get a good map of all mountain locations, and rivers in WorldBuilder are a huge pain.

If the map doesn't appear in your list after adding the mod in the in-game menu, luckily, there's an easy fix.

Assuming you're using Windows like I am, in "Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5" are a large handful of files. Within "MODS" you should be able to find the mod packages and take the ".civ5map" files, these can then be dropped into the "Maps" folder.

This SHOULD work. Blame Steam and Firaxis' finicky systems

My thoughts 4 years after:

Sadly, Civ 5 is not optimized for this map size. Maps of this size become unstable during gameplay. Some major limitations include the RAM limits caused by Civ 5 being a 32-bit application and an issue where a single civ having more than 250 cities causes city captures to take many minutes or longer to process. Increasing the minimum distance between cities and introducing strict unit supply limits could improve stability, but it's just too damn big. Likewise, this map is not a good candidate for transfer to Civ 6 because that game ALSO has stability issues on maps of this size with recent DLCs.

Great map! Just watch out in which folder you are putting it (See description or Tyrone's comment). Also you should go for full amount of Civs and City States and use some Mod like Barbarian Spam fix or somehow magically ban Barbarians ;)
