Historical Ship Class Names and Naval OOB

Description
Please note this mod will not be updated further. Due to the sheer scope of work required to update The War at Sea to 1.6.*/MtG, I just don't have the capacity to do both. Anyone else who's keen is welcome to take the mod and continue it, and I'll support them as best I can.

Version 1.5.3 Update

- A minor update to remove a duplicate U-101 from the German sub namelists – cheers to Lopus for the heads-up.

Mod description:

This a primarily flavour mod, although the OOB changes will have a minor impact on balance. The idea is to have a mod that has relatively light interactions with other game mechanics, so it's easy to play with new DLC/patches without needing a lot of testing - there will be other more involved mods down the track.

This mod covers:
- Historically accurate ship class names and naval OOB for the 1936 start, within the limits of the vanilla HoI4 game (so the naval statistics for model/year types won't change, but variants will change, and in some cases the model/year type for a particular ship will change. Techs have been added where necessary (eg, for the two Tone class CAs Japan had in production at game start). Small ships like sub 800t TBs have been removed, a few minor ships that the vanilla game missed have been added, as have submarine-minelayers (as they were capable of acting as submarines in a world without mines, like HoI4). That said, Paradox did a very good job with the starting OOB, so the main addition here are accurate class names.
- Historically accurate naval production at game start. The vanilla game is missing a lot of ships that were partially completed on 1 January 1936 (like the CVs Yorktown and Enterprise, for a couple of famous examples). Sadly, at the moment this is mainly a player feature, as the AI will remove production for any ships it doesn’t have enough dockyards to work on (regardless of how completed they are), but there’s some hope that this will be changed in the base game.

Thanks to Elouda for his scripting tips, and von_Lipstig (Soviet OOBs), Telematic, ITA, FrancescoT, Sparrow and The Balbinater (Italian OOBs), Alwar and Solfall (Norway OOB) from the Paradox forums or Steam for their input and insight :).

If anyone's keen they're welcome to ask (and it's highly unlikely I'd say no) - I've always said of all my mods that anyone is welcome to use any of the content therein. I am plugging away at a deeper rework in TWAS, but that's a ways off at this stage.

ever thought of giving the mod to someone else to continue?

Hi All - Sadly, I will no longer be updating or working on this mod. I'm not abandoning HoI4 (I still think it's a great game), but I'm tied up in other HoI4-related things (that were very much unexpected) and can only manage one thing at a time. Thank you for your support of this mod, and I wish you all the best for your HoI4 and other gaming in the future.

Hey @jdexpress6842 - I totally agree, but the main aim of this mod is to be a 'flavour without balance impact', so if I adjusted HMS Eagle to only be able to carry 25 aircraft, say, then I'm jumping into the balance train. My other naval mod, The War at Sea, goes into much more detail like this, with aircraft complements of the various carrier classes being much closer to their historical figures.

A way you can make the deck size of some of the carriers that should be smaller is to increase their armour.

No worries - if I had set the Schlesien and Schleswig-Holstein to Bismarck class, that would definitely be worth mentioning :). If you do find anything awry, I'd definitely be interested. Either way, happy gaming :).

weird I'll look into it I don't think there should be anything affecting it lol, my apologies

@G0dd - this mod has the Schlesien and Schleswig-Holstein as the Deutschland class (they were Deutschland-class pre-dreadnoughts). If you're seeing them as Bismarcks, you may have other mods enabled that might be causing things to go awry.
Perc Sep 5, 2018 @ 7:54pm
"Historical" makes the WWI battleships of Germany into Bismarcks lol okay.

There's a good argument for one (and there's much better data for the 1939 OOBs), but I'm afraid I don't have the capacity for that at the moment or in the forseeable future.
