Sorry my second reply didn't really have any actual input, I somehow misread your message.
I would recommend not attacking from a distance after the enemy attacks. Not only is the Reaper fast, but your enemy is going to be stunned after you hit them, so you could get out of their hit range pretty quickly.
did y'try the description for combat tips? I emphasized the intention of having the character attack before the enemy is within reach. You're supposed to time it to compensate.
