The Story of Nelly
How did such a stupidly named game come about?

Good question.

This game began ten years ago as a birthday present for my girlfriend. Her nickname is Nelly Cootalot and she loves pirates and birds. So Spoonbeaks Ahoy! is about a pirate who rescues birds. Natch.

Having begun writing it as a birthday present, I then ran over-schedule and it became a CHRISTMAS present. Then I ran over-schedule again and it became a NEXT birthday present. And finally, in 2007 I released it into the world of freeware indie games. And there were many lovely reviews, and one offer of marriage which I diplomatically declined.

Nelly and Alasdair at Halloween

Many years and a successful Kickstarter later, I released another Nelly game called Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet. This was a much bigger game, and featured cool voice actors including Tom Baker (Doctor Who, Little Britain). But I still harboured a lot of love for Spoonbeaks Ahoy!.

Our MacBook-smashingly-good Launch Trailer

However, the low-res Spoonbeaks graphics which used to look great on my chunky old CRT monitor, look increasingly crummy on high-resolution LCD screens. And sometimes the game doesn't run at all. Luckily, most of the artwork in Spoonbeaks Ahoy! started out as vector art. This means it can be scaled up without any loss in quality. So we want to remaster the artwork to take full advantage of high-res widescreen monitors.

There will be challenges along the way, but we think it's worth preserving this cool, funny little game and bringing it to new players on Steam.

This is Alasdair, signing off.

Description
Release date: Early 2017
“Nelly Cootalot is a Hoot… a delightful little adventure game” - Kotaku

Introduction
The response to our comedy point-and-click game Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet - (click here!), with lots of lovely reviews and fan mails, has inspired us to bring Nelly's first adventure to Steam.

“Creative puzzle design and charming characters” - Adventure Gamers

Spoonbeaks Ahoy!
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! (“one of the loveliest AGS games ever made” - PC Gamer) was released back in 2007 as a free download. Tens of thousands of downloads later, the low-res graphics don't really hold up on widescreen monitors. We want to give Spoonbeaks Ahoy a high definition makeover to get it running on current PCs.

“Splendid design, with gorgeous hand-drawn background graphics” - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Remastering
The screenshots above are from the 2007 edition of the game. As you can see, a high definition version will suit modern screens much better:

Original Resolution (640x480)

High Resolution (1920x1080)

The Story
Nelly Cootalot, fearsome pirate and lover of tiny and adorable creatures, is charged by the spirit of a dead buccaneer to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fleet of birds known as spoonbeaks. Her adventure will bring her face to face with the nefarious Baron Widebeard as she uncovers corruption and wanton punning in the Barony of Meeth.

“Best Freeware Adventure Games 2007” selection - Indiegames

The game offers the opportunity to:
  • Rescue endangered and unusually named wildfowl.
  • Acquire morally dubious items on behalf of minor aristocrats.
  • Intercept the private correspondences of a daredevil pilot.
  • Come to the aid of downtrodden supernatural beings.
  • Be confused by Nelly’s obscure colloquialisms.
  • Borrow facial hair from long-dead pirates.
  • Wantonly misuse the word ‘borrow’.

I played The Fowl Fleet and I couldn't stop until I finished it. It was that good. I'm looking forward to playing the remake of Spoonbeaks Ahoy.
