"You feel vibrations from deep below..."

The Destroyer, a mechanical excavation/demolition engine meant to emulate the Eater of Worlds. Where the Eater of Worlds devours, the Destroyer eradicates. He ejects autonomous probes from his spinal column, which seek out and destroy anyone who threatens their metallic host. While his main body burrows through the ground at lightning speed, his probes mop up any sort of resistance on the surface.

Another really popular boss request after the Eater of Worlds. He also happens to be one of the more challenging bosses from a stylistic standpoint. Just like Twins, there were a lot of mechanical oddities that had to be smoothed out during his creation. I decided to keep a lot closer to the sprite this time, and not go off on some tangent like I did with the Twins.

Several things about his design are rather mysterious. After checking around a bit, I found that there wasn't really any common agreement on some of Destroyer's various doodads.

For example, what are the little T-shaped things on his side running down the length of the body? Rockets? Laser guns? Pointless metal bits? I decided to bank on the rocket idea, and turned them into very basic jets.

On the Eater of Worlds there are tons of eyes running along his spine. I decided to turn these into glass-dome cameras for the Destroyer.

Probably the biggest change from the original design is the inclusion of black tubing between his sections. In the game, he simply bends his metal frame when he wants to turn. I felt this was a bit immersion destroying in 3D. Having dividers made out of a stretchy black plastic feels a bit more realistic.

The face area was a bit of a guessing game. Beyond the base silhouette, I had to decide what to do with his mouth area. The mandible portion is pretty straightforward, but the large cylindrical attachments on either side of his head are a bit of a mystery. I interpreted them as some kind of ground sensor for detecting movement, or perhaps they create vibrations that allow the Destroyer to move through the ground easier. It's really up to anyone's interpretation at this point. I also added grinders inside of his mouth, if simply because they felt imposing. It adds sort of mechanical T-rex vibe. The blue tubing near the cockpit is a holdover from another idea that revolved around him being powered by blue souls. At this point, I don't think I could tell you how he actually digs through the earth, or how he propels himself so quickly with such minimal effort. There's no real science here.

Finally, I made a few improvements to my texture techniques for flat non-TF2 metal. Destroyer is scratched up and worn from all the digging he's been doing, and it is reflected in his texture.

I could talk more about Destroyer, and Probe as well, but this description is way too long as it is.

Notes

Mostly a repeat of the Eater of World notes. He is enormous in size, so he's been split up into different lengths for ease of use. Small and Medium are you goto sizes. Tiny doesn't really have a use in this context. Large has been readded to the submission, for super large coiling shots.

-Sizes(including head and tail):
Tiny: 3 sections
Small: 6 sections
Medium: 12 sections
Large: 24 sections

-Destroyer ups the complexity compared to Eater of Worlds by nearly three times. He's quite detailed in his metalwork and bone structure, and boasts nearly twice the number of triangles, three times the number of bones, as well as a few extra features to compensate for his different operating states.

-After some rework with the large model(and getting it fixed for GMod), I was able to work around some of the limits that were blocking me before. As with the Eater of Worlds, it features 24 segments. Sadly, I was not able to keep the probe attachment points for the large model, so you'll have to use a smaller Destroyer if you wish to bind individual probes. Not really much of a loss, however, as I doubt anyone would want to bind 23 probes to Destroyer manually.

-Scripts will be provided to help manage his complex rigging.

-The teeth section contains two horizontal grinders and two rotary ones angled from the back of his mouth. These can be turned off with the "teeth" bodygroup to reveal his throat.

-There are a few blue pipes scattered along his head portion to add a bit of color variance, but if you do not care for this feature you can turn it off via the "pipes" bodygroup.

-Each section of the Destroyer has two rockets on either side. They have attachment bones for binding particle effects like rocket exhaust. Just lock the particle to the bone and One it in place. I decided to use bones here because attachment points were not compiling like they should.

-The Destroyer has an attachment bone for Probes at each section along his spine. Simply lock the rootTransform and probe bone to the attachment point and One it in place.

-If you do not wish to plug in every Probe into Destroyer manually, you can enable baked probes via the "probes" bodygroup. These baked probes will also respond to skin changes with Destroyer.

-The Destroyer and the Probe can be turned on and off using skins.

-As with Eater of Worlds, be sure to use FK posing when wrapping the worm.

-Probe has an attachment bone for attaching particle effects. You can use this to quickly add some jet streams out the back.

The original concept and design of the "Destroyer" is the intellectual property of "Re-Logic".

Omg. I hate fighting this death machine. I always wanted to animate what it was like when me and my sister fought the thing for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time.

So what's next for ya? Maybe Skeletron Prime? Or how about Ocram from the console version? He'd make a cool model!
