First Things

This game uses Games for Windows - Live (GFWL) so if you hate this platform then avoid buying this game although there are workarounds to avoid using it.

GFWL is not shutdown, the marketplace on the other hand is, you cannot buy games and DLC through it but it is needed for multiplayer, achivements and acts as a DRM that annoys many. It is also needed for some save game files. (If you use the workarounds, the save games will not work with a user that uses a GFWL version of the game and vice versa)

Region Locking is one of the worst things made by Microsoft as a result GFWL suffers from it, this link provides all the countries that can use it (Link works with most english speaking countries, your results may vary).

There is a possible fix for those if you are in a region locked country, however it must be done on account creation for it to work and I should stress that it is a possible fix not a guranteed one.

Note: Although the marketplace does not work you still can sign into it to view previous purchases (if any) that you have made be it Games or DLC. As long as the game connected to said DLC is still using GFWL, the DLC will still be present & usable.

Steam Note: As of the 17th March 2017 the Original Bulletstorm is no longer available on steam, if you want to purchase this game, it is still available on Retail. It is not available to purchase on Origin but any keys that have been bought on steam previously or via retail are still redeemable via Origin.

Bulletstorm Demo

The demo is still available even tho it is not advertised.

The demo does require you to have GFWL however the workaround does work for the demo to bypass it.

The Demo features have: Part of the game ( 1 Chapter I think) half way through. Three weapons, the PMC (Your basic rifle) Screamer (Revolver) & Flailgun (Chain Grenade Launcher) and one Echos mission (Short single player score attacker, if you have GFWL then you can try and beat your friends scores, if any)

Gameplay fixes

Sometimes you will come across a bug that will prevent you from continuing for whatever reason, the easiest way to fix this is to exit then hit continue when you get to the menu.

If this has not fixed the problem then exit goto Campaign then Act then Chapter and select the one you were last on, select then choose the one you were on (if your new it will be the latest one). All the progress you made before hand will be saved up to that point. Any progress after will be lost, if that does not work try the chapter before that.

If that has not worked then it could be your install might be corrupted and you need to install the game again. (I know it is annoying but it has happened to most of us)

Textures/Graphics Fixes

Some of the Textures are bad in this game but can be fixed by some tweaking and replacing of certain files. Usally the ones affected are those with newer graphics cards after the games release.

Crash Fixes and GFWL

Most crashes and startup crashes are related to GFWL, this is usally caused by the version that comes with the game, it is old and works if the GFWL was not partially turned off.

To fix this you need to visit Xbox Live and download the latest GFWL there. To get best results, make sure you un-install the old version before installing the new one.
Note: Verifying the Game Cache will cause it to download the old version again, despite what steam says this is not a good fix for this game, avoid this option.

If the fixes above do not work and you are not fussed about multiplayer or want to avoid GFWL altogether, then use Subscrub's for the workaround or SHOUBISHOCK's one for both the workaround and tweaks to the game. Files have been used by lots of people with no complaints of viruses or malware, if you are not sure then use your judgement. (Bear in mind the Steam filters are in affect and the link might not work, drop a message to the guide creator for help if need be).

It also is possible to avoid the workarounds by creating an offline profile (Your system results may vary) You can do this in two ways:
When you log in for the first time on GFWL in-game and select 'Create new Account' you might get an option that will allow to play offline.
The other option is to startup the game, then disconnect yourself from the internet either when you have signed in or not.

There also a file to download that apparently will fix it too, but due to bad rep levels, I will not provide the link, use it at your own risk when searching for it.

If you have a Firewall on your computer or network turn it off for it to update/login then after turn it on once you are done. HTTP protocol is in some Firewalls, turn that off as well and turn back on when done. (RealOwl124)

It has also come to my attention another reason why it won't update is because you might be in a region locked country which does not support updates. Unless you have access to a Proxy address in a country that is not region locked there isn't much else to use. There is a few vids on youtube that can also help are they are:

If your trying to use a retail copy on steam or still have no luck then try switching to Origin as some users have had better luck there.

If all fails then try Xbox Live or Origin/EA support (bear in mind if you activate it via Origin, you might lose the right to refund it on Steam)

Input Devices

Gamepads although can be used for this game are not supported and as such you might have difficulty to use for this game only one solution so far and its for the Xbox 360 Gamepad:

It has been mentioned that you can try the same fix with PS3 controllers but it is not a confirmed fix

GFWL Login Problems

Been made aware that some people might have a Parent lock either through the service or through their computer.

While there is not direct way to fix it, you can use three methods to go around it.

The first only works if friend requests are problematic you can bypass this by logining in through the GFWL site:

And send a friend request there.

The other method which apparently works is to do the following:

Go to: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\(game blocked by parental controls)
Click on the games name that won’t let you download/update/play on steam

It’ll tell you something like you don't have permission to access the folder. What you do is when the error pops up, click on the blue words and it will take you to the permissions for the folder, from there just go to each account and change everything to full permissions by checking the boxes. After, just click Apply and you all good. It WILL let you in the first folder from common, just click Binaries and the error will pop up.

I also uninstalled the parental control program which was Windows Family Live Safety or something (not sure if you have to do this but could be part of the problem, if you are not sure then leave it alone)

P.S. YOU HAVE TO BE AN ADMINISTRATOR TO CHANGE THE PERMISSIONS

The third is to contact Xbox Support to request the lock reset, might be a bit of a headache but that is the best there is if the other two did not work for you.

There's nothing in the config. The actual solution was on the thread you linked; the international version is pretty much identical to the German version, except that in Germany it also includes a series of UPK files with "LOC_DEU" at the end. These are all German Edition files that contain cleaner animations. Clearing those files will remove the changes, though some of the prerendered cutscenes are still cut down a bit.

When you activate your key on Origin, it'll ask you to pick from three different versions of the game; one of them is a Chinese or Japanese localization (not sure which), the other seems to be an international version with everything from American to German to Russian, while the third is the heavily modified German version that got absolutely panned at launch. They're all compatible in multiplayer anyway.

By "can't be reversed," I meant that whatever version you pick is the one you keep. This German version is ONLY German and English, no other language.

Whatever you do, DO NOT click the version that is only Deutsch/English. This version is the no fun edition and can NOT be reversed.
