No Mining Penalty

Description
Removes the hidden yet crippling 50% mining penalty.

Resource probes are still required for you to see the density, but with this mod you only require one resource probe per sector to avoid the penalty.

Vanilla has a hidden mechanic which checks if your mining ships are within 40km of a resource probe owned by you and silently applies a 50% penalty to mining efficiency if they are not. Thus, players are unknowingly hamstrung by this mechanic as there is literally no way to learn it exists in-game.

This mechanic is particularly troubling because vanilla has no automatic method to deploy resource probes, so it's extremely tedious to avoid the penalty without mods. If you know the penalty exists, there is no indication if or when it is applied to your ships.

Even when using a mod like Satellite Service to automatically blanket the entire sector with probes, it is still possible to receive this penalty because the probes are deployed on one plane. Therefore, you would receive the penalty if the ship moves >40km above or below the probes. Covering the entire sector with probes also reduces performance and visually clutters the UI.

The mod KUDA AI Tweaks also provides a configuration option to remove this penalty. My mod functions as a standalone alternative but does not use his code.

Proof of the mechanic: developer confirmation on their official forum[forum.egosoft.com].
He refers to it as a bonus, but it is actually a penalty since the end result of the calculation is multiplied by 0.5.

Awesome. I hate having to manually make sure miners are always near a probe... Thanks.

The most beloved hidden penalty since Terraria added bad luck with ladybugs and torches.

@Tisoon:
It does remove the penalty from NPC factions if they own at least one probe in the sector. The vanilla penalty code checks for probe ownership, so your probes will not remove their penalty and vice versa.

Does this mod also affect AI miners? Or do they still follow the Vanilla behaviour?
Thanks for the mod 🙂

they need to fix this bullshit mechanic. Thanks man

At some point in the tutorial it is mentioned that a miner without a probe is less efficient but I thought it would be like a bonus if a probe was within the sector and not like penalty and the miner needing to be in range of it

@IchBinGroot
I didn't claim it only affects the player. A penalty is still a penalty if both parties can receive it. The problem is the lack of information about its existence, and the lack of feedback if and when it is applied to your ships. Players who enjoy the penalty can choose not to use the mod.

the penalty applies for ALL mining ships. the reason is balancing. the AI get this penalty too. the idea is to boost the player if the probes are used.
so what everyone calling a penalty is just 'normal'

So the presumed intent is to equip miners with probes and when they arrive somewhere, drop the probe. Refill as needed. As usual makes good sense from a perspective one would have no idea to start from ;)

Thank you!
