There is ALWAYS one near a damaged capsule, and there is also ones just here and there all over the place, but the no-dig method works on all of them.

The exception to this is the cargo pods around wrecked freighters those are commonly deep enough that you are forced to dig it out, also sometimes the side with the door that you need to access is away from you or not on the top, forcing more digging.
