Akebono, a native of Hawaii, became a successful sumo wrestler in Japan before transitioning to kickboxing, MMA, and pro wrestler.

As a pro wrestler, he has worked primarily in Japan, including runs with AJPW, NJPW, Zero1, and Dragon Gate, but his debut in the squared circle came under the bright lights of WrestleMania 21. At the WWE's premier event, Akebono defeated Big Show in a sumo match.
