Description
NS Verlengd Interregiomaterieel (VIRM) 2/3
! REQUIRES INFINITE ELECTRIC !
The VIRM is a double decker train that is used extensively by the Dutch Railways (NS) as an intercity train. This specifically is the modernised VIRM 2/3, of which the first one was rolled out in 2021. I spent a lot of time trying to make this train as accurate as possible, whilst keeping it within the possibilities in Stormworks. As I haven't seen this train a lot in real life, some details might be off. If anybody spots anything off with this train, please let me know!

Specs
  • Top Speed: >160km/h but recommended 120km/h
  • Passenger Count: 90 (StormLink Compatitable)
  • Length: as long as your pc can handle, but irl they are connected in units of 4 or 6.

Features
I spent a lot of time working on the systems for this train, and that has brought the following features:
  • Working ATB (automatic train control) system, which forces traindrivers to keep a set speedlimit. (more about this below)
  • Automatic Coupling, even with multiple front and rear carraiges. Only the outermost carriages will be able to control the train. All other carraiges will automatically enter slave mode.
  • Realistic Doors. The conductor can open/close all doors from one position. First unlock the doors from the cockpit, and then toggle the central open/close switch on. When you press open door now all doors will open. Turning the switch off closes all doors except the one you are at. Pressing close door closes all doors.
  • Working Destination Signs. Arrival time is randomised as I didn't feel like making an advanced controller for that but you can set a final destination from the cockpit display (as long as it has control). I didn't add all destinations but I might add more later.
    Destination Numbers
    1. Camodo Terminal
    2. Spycakes
    3. Endo Terminal
    4. Trinite
    5. Sawyer North
    6. Sawyer South
    7. Etrain Terminal
    8. Brainz Yard
    9. Serpentine Yard
    10. Scxeech Trading Yard
    11. Mauve Yard
    12. Olli Switchyard
    13. Kenichi
    14. Keptin Aluminium
    15. Daylight Refinery
    16. BVG Depot
  • StormLink Compatitable. You can find the capacity for each carriage either on one of the balconies or in the cockpit.
  • Deadman's Switch. When not in the drivers seat with throttle >1% the emergency brakes will automatically be applied. Can be disabled through the microcontroller properties above the drivers seat!
  • Emergency Brakes. Placed all over the train. Can also be triggered by ATB or Deadman's Switch. To reset a pulled emergency brake wait 10 seconds and then hold the reset button for a few second until the light stops blinking.
  • Intercom System. Can be used by pressing the PTT Intercom button in the cockpit.

Starting the Train
  1. Set the Direction. On the third tab of the cockpit monitor switch the direction so that the yellow CONTROL light is on.
  2. Set up the way you want to: turn on lights, heating, raise or lower the pantograph, turn on the radio, set a destination on the second page of the cockpit display.
  3. If the ATB OUT OF SERVICE light is blinking: Press and hold the ATB Acknowledge button for 5 seconds until you hear a beep. Emergency brakes will turn off in a few seconds.
  4. Make sure the parking brake is turned off. This button is to the right of the brake lever.
  5. Put the brake lever forward into T (traction). Now you can start applying throttle and drive off.

ATB (automatic train control)
This train contains an ATB system, which is short for the Dutch term 'Automatische Treinbeïnvloeding', literally translated into automatic train control. All trains in the Netherlands are required to use this system. The system sends a speed limit to the train, and if the train drives faster than this speed limit, will apply emergency brakes.

My version of ATB consists of a radio beacon next to the track that broadcasts an on signal and a number, which is the speed limit in km/h divided by 10 (so 40km/h = 4). Once the train comes into the range of the controller, the ATB OUT OF SERVICE light will start blinking. You will now have to press and hold the ATB Acknowledge button for 5 seconds. This will activate ATB. If the ATB system isn't activated in time, the emergency brakes will be applied.

You can see the speed limit set by ATB on the dial to the right of the radio display. If you go over this speed limit, you will hear a fast beeping noise. You will have to slow down enough to be below the speed limit or apply your brakes for more than 10% within a set timeframe or emergency brakes will be applied. When this happens, the ATB SPEEDBRAKE light will come on.

Whenever you are not in range of an ATB beacon, the system will be disabled and you can drive as fast as you like. When leaving the ATB beacon's range you will hear a repeated beeping noise for a few seconds and the ATB OUT OF SERVICE light will come on.

I included one ATB beacon at the rear of the front carriage, which has a default speed of 40km/h. You can do whatever you want with it. I might make an addon later which covers the entire map but it is too much work for now. (if you want you can make one too) If you do not want to use the ATB system, you can disable it through the property settings on the ATB beacon which should be at the rear of the front carriage.

Credits and Redistribution
This creation uses the amazing electric bogies by hypothonk, which allow it to drive at very high speeds without any wheelslip.

You can reupload this train if you want, as long as you modify it at least a small bit and link to this page.

Make sure your side has control, and then toggle the light switch on the left side. If the carriages are connected correctly, the lights for all carriages should sync.

how do i turn on all of the light in all of the cars?

The alarm is probably from the ATB beacon, to disable it, whilst in the editor, click on the microcontroller of the antenna beacon behind the front carriage of the train and turn it off.
I might switch it to being default-off later so people don't get confused as to why there is an alarm going off.

In the workbench on the top toolbar press the select button, then click on the big microcontroller in the roof above the drivers seat (called "VIRM Cockpit Controller") and then on the left side of the screen you will see a switch that says "Deadmans Switch". Disabling this disables the deadmans.
