BERLIN Class Aerial Battleship

The sands swallow all that roam upon them,
and the biting wind destroys that which relies on it.

To wage war, there is no option but the belching flame of rocket engines.



10,000 years past the death of humanity, a colony ship that had been dormant for millenia crashed upon a desert planet. Despite being critically damaged, the ship’s essential functions remained and the humans aboard remained alive in stasis. When they awoke, what awaited them was a barren hellscape, with a thin atmosphere and scarce mineral resources. With no alternatives, the settlers continued out into the desert to build a new civilisation for themselves.

Centuries have passed since the colony ship, now referred to by the populace as the Grand Source, arrived on this world. Since then, society has developed and various nations have arisen. Most prominent is the Kingdom of Pertau, which controls a vast territory surrounding the point where civilization first began. Their society is one of opulent royalty and vast wealth inequality. Nevertheless, the average Pertanni enjoys a reasonably high standard of living relative to other nations, such as Pertau’s main economic and territorial rival the Northern Principality.

This has come to be due to the nature of traversing the desert; wheels and tracked vehicles sink in the sand, while combustion engines and jets are rendered useless from frequent dust and sand storms. Rocketry is the only viable propulsion, leading to the creation of increasingly vast rocket powered airships. While Pertau houses a decent industrial base and has monopolised uranium, the only source of which being the vast stores from the Grand Source, it crucially lacks underground ice deposits, essential for the production of hydrogen rocket fuel. The Northern Principality has these in abundance, and as such Pertanni royalty has set its sights on obtaining their territory, to fuel their ships into the future.

Pertanni intentions were made clear with the formation of the Royal Pertanni Aerial Armada, and their construction of vast armoured battleship hulls. These hulls would become the Berlin Class of aerial battleships, flying behemoths whose purpose was to reign in the sky. Requiring vast amounts of resources to construct, and even more to maintain and fuel, it was the hope of the Pertanni royalty that these ships would carve away at the Principality’s territory, and secure the fuel to keep them airborne.


The Berlin Class is the first true warship to come out of Pertau, and is fitted with as much armour and firepower as can stay airborne. Its top deck is lined with turreted artillery, and the hull below houses massive arrays of fixed cannons both frontally and on the broadside. Also in the hull are two storeys of musket decks, useful for deploying large numbers of soldiers in landing and boarding operations, as well as providing extra firepower when broadsiding enemy vessels or shooting downwards at targets on the ground. Filling the central hull are vast fuel stores, necessary for keeping such a vessel in the air.

Complex electronics such as digital cameras for precision targeting aren’t possible at the current technological level of Pertau, and as such a skilled helmsman is a necessity for effective firing of the main frontal and broadside batteries.
