Soviet S-class Submarine C-51

Description
Soviet S-class C-51 Submarine

"As a part of the ESSR, or "Europa Salvage Submarine Replacement" program headed by the Europan Coalition, offworld wreck salvagers have continued in their operations to raise submarine wrecks from the oceans of Old Earth in an effort to replenish a diminishing supply of reserve submarines available for Europan captains to commandeer.

Found in the torrential depths of the Baltic Sea, salvagers rose the wreck of a mid-20th century submarine identified as "C-51", a vessel that once belonged to a long-dead nation, the Soviet Union. Several months of repairs and modifications made "C-51" operational for Europan deployment and was shipped offworld to Europan orbital shipyards to complete inspection and approval. Upon commissioning, it was delivered to the shallowest colonies underneath Europa's icy surface, ready to explore its frigid depths."

Design Specifications

This Soviet-era vessel was designed through international collaboration between Soviet and German engineers, a by-product of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, which resulted in two different, yet similar, classes of submarines that clashed in the latter years of WW2. This version of the Soviet S-class Submarine has been sanctioned by the Europan Coalition, in partnership with offworld salvaging companies, to better combat the harsh and hazardous environment of Europa's oceans.

Weapon Specifications

Sporting an average range of weaponry, the C-51 boasts:
  • 3 coil guns (1 on top-aft and 2 at the keel)
  • 1 chaingun stationed in a heightened position just aft of the conning tower
  • 1 main fore railgun
  • 1 aft depth charge
  • 2 bow torpedo tubes

Handling Specifications

Its original diesel engine powergrid has been replaced with a limited nuclear reactor and serves as its new main engine compartment. The vessel's junction compartment is adjacent-aft to the main nuclear engine room, with a backup electrical array serving as the vessel's electric engine in the case of a main engine failure or absence of fuel. This electric engine is wired into the main grid and is togglable via a switch left-aft of the electric engine array.

  • The Navigation Terminal has access to primary steering and docking functions, as well as access to the on/off status of the ship's engines.

Its main method of propulsion is a twin turbine propeller engine capable of generating forward thrust up to 27 km/h. This propeller system is able to be switched on or off for diver safety at the Navigation Terminal.

The vessel's conning tower has access to its main docking port and main airlock for excursions and dives.

The first deck, from left to right, contains the brig, engineering, and junction compartment/battery array all at the aft end of the boat. The nuclear reactor room, medbay, and main command room, are mid-ship. The gunnery compartment and crew quarters lie at the fore and bow of the vessel.

The second deck contains the fore and aft ballast compartments, a single cargo/stowage compartment, and armory and ammo storage. The brig, as well as the armory's secure steel cabinets, can only be accessed via a Captain's or Security Officer's ID Card.

Accessible via these two decks is a central access shaft and ladder which extends from the top docking port through the vessel's conning tower, into the command room, and depositing into the armory.
