Backpack Crafting Enhanced

Description
We can craft complex armours and weapons, but we can't craft backpacks?
Now you can turn your leather into backpacks, animal backpacks, quivers, and MORE!

I always found it strange that with all of Kenshi's advanced crafting, that there was no way to craft backpacks and that there were so few available. This mod aims to fix these problems, first by adding backpack crafting via research and second, by adding in new items such as animal backpacks, quivers (made by Zheyron), and a special series of backpacks called "Wanderer Backpacks" (made by Elwo).

The Quiver and Thieves Quiver in this mod were made by Zheyron. I simply edited the stats, textures, and icons slightly to fit this mod. I asked for permission to include his quivers and his response was "@2PercentNate You can use my mod's assets for other Kenshi workshop projects as long as you credit me :) I give you consent." Here is his original upload:

All backpacks/quivers titled "Wandering" in this mod were made by Elwo and come from the Backpacks Expanded 2.0 (Quivers added!) mod. I simply edited the stats, names, and vendor distrubition slightly to fit this mod. I asked for permission to include these backpacks and the response I got was "@2PercentNate Go ahead! :D" Here is the original upload:

Note: Since all of these items were slightly adjusted, they are considered new items. Therefore, this mod is 100% compatible with both of the above mentioned mods.

New Items:
-Quiver: Slight stealth penalties with a 2x6 inventory and 15 total stack size. Also reduceds weight by 80%. No need for Strength on archers!
-Thieves Quiver: No stat penalties with a 2x6 inventory and 15 total stack size. Also reduceds weight by 80%. No need for Strength on archers!
-Dog Backpack: Similar to the Medium Backpack in stats, but with an added 4x bonus stack size.
-Dog Thieves Backpack: No stat penalties, but has a small inventory and no bonus stack size.
-Goat Thieves Backpack: No stat penalties, but has a small inventory and no bonus stack size.
-Padded Bull Backpack: Compared to the regular Bull Backpack, this one has two less stack size (3 instead of 5), but no combat penalties.
-Padded Garru Backpack: Compared to the regular Garru Backpack, this one has two less stack size (4 instead of 6), but no combat penalties.
-Crab Backpack: Compared to the Padded Bull Backpack, it has a slightly smaller inventory, but the same stack size of 3 and also no combat penalties.

New Items - Wandering Archer's Quivers:
-Wandering Archer's Heavies Quiver: Designed to hold Bolts [Heavies]. No stat penalties and 90% reduced weight, but has a 2x3 inventory, making it impossible to hold all types of bolts.
-Wandering Archer's Leather Quiver: Designed to hold Bolts [Toothpicks]. No stat penalties and 90% reduced weight, but has a 1x3 inventory, making it impossible to hold all types of bolts.
-Wandering Archer's Mesh Quiver: Designed to hold Bolts [Longs]. No stat penalties and 90% reduced weight, but has a 1x5 inventory, making it impossible to hold all types of bolts.
-Wandering Archer's Metal Quiver: With a 3x5 inventory, this quiver can stack lots of bolts and can accomodate for any type of bolt as well. However, there is a 40% reduction to stealth and dodge.
-Wandering Archer's Normals Quiver: Designed to hold Bolts [Normals]. No stat penalties and 90% reduced weight, but has a 1x4 inventory, making it impossible to hold all types of bolts.
-Wandering Archer's Wooden Quiver: Comparable to the Leather Quiver, this one also has a 1x3 inventory to hold Bolts [Toothpicks], but has slight combat penalties and a larger stack maximum.

New Items - Wanderer Backpacks:
-Wandering Engineer's Backpack: Huge combat penalties, very little weight reduction, but lots of storage space and stack size. Also good for strength training!
-Wandering Nomad's Backpack: Stealth and dodge reduced by 50%, but no combat penalties. Has a x4 stack size and plenty of space.
-Wandering Scavenger's Backpack: Comparable to the Small Thieves Backpack, but with better weight reduction and 15% stealth and dodge penalties. Can be used by low strength characters easily.
-Wandering Smuggler's Bag: With a huge stack size and an 2x3 inventory, this bag was meant for stacking Hashish! Also slightly boosts stealth and dodge.
-Wandering Thieves Backpack: Comparable to the regular Thieves Backpack, but with no combat penalties, a x2 stack size, and a slightly smaller overall space.
-Wandering Trader's Backpack: Comparable to the Wooden Backpack, but with less combat and stealth penalties and a slightly larger inventory.

Stat Tweaks:
-Trader's Wooden Backpack: Increased from 50% to 60% weight reduction to make it different than the regular Wooden Backpack.

Backpack crafting is available with the following research:
-Basic Backpack Crafting - Available at Tech Level 1; Requires 1 Book
-Backpack Crafting - Available at Tech Level 2; Requires 3 Books
-Advanced Backpack Crafting- Available at Tech Level 3; Requires 5 Books

ALL backpacks are craftable, including Shopkeepers and Traders! You just need to finish the respective research and also find and purchase the blueprints.

The new backpacks and the blueprints are sold in their respective stores. I.E. Most Backpacks are sold by adventure shops, Thieves Backpacks are sold by the Shinobi Guild, Animal Backpacks are sold by animal traders, Crab Backpack is sold by Crab Raiders, and Quivers are sold by crossbow stores.

Unfortunately backpack crafting is not fully implemented into the game, so when you craft backpacks they end up being produced instantaneously. In order to combat this glitch, I added a new item to the game called Leather Strips. Leather Strips can be crafted using the new Leather Strips Bench, which unlocks with Basic Backpack Crafting. The time spent to craft the backpack will instead be spent crafting Leather Strips.

This is also the case with storing backpacks in a unique container; they were never implemented. I added in a backpack storage container, but technically anything can be stored in said container.

This should be compatible with most mods. Most changes are additions with the new research, buildings, and backpacks. There are only two vanilla edits: The Trader's Wooden Backpack and adding to vendor lists. Since this mod adds items to the vendor lists, they should still show up in most cases. If you have other mods editing Trader's Wooden Backpack, this would need to loaded after if you want to keep those stat changes.

P.S. There are many mods that allow backpack crafting, but I wanted more than just vanilla backpacks, so that's why this version is an enhanced backpack mod!

If you enjoy my mod, feel free to hit that 👍

Thanks for mod! I made a few submods for it:
IWK+ Backpack Crafting Enhanced - integrate Backpack Crafting Enhanced into IWK+
Cross-mod Backpack Integration - balance and research tree rebalance for integration

I absolutely agree! So many incredible modders and the awesome developers that let us poke away at their game <3

Man, this is part of why I love Kenshi so much.

The game offers so much, that what isn't there, or what doesn't work properly in vanilla sticks out, so seeing creative and talented modders and programmers coming forth to bring their ideas forward, the accessibility of it, and how well they can fit into the base game and feel like natural additions is just fantastic.

@CENKER THE FATHER If there's enough support for it, then yes, I'll stop being lazy and make a no penalty version. Otherwise, you're free to dive into the FCS! It's not that hard to use and you're welcome to edit my mods to your heart's content <3

can we have a no penalty version of this?

@Lord Dickinson McCheddar There is a bug in vanilla Kenshi where stores don't restock properly. I've had it happen to me several times, usually at Waystations for some reason. An import does fix this bug.
Otherwise, the blueprint is set to spawn at a 300% rate at Shinobi traders, so it should show up quite frequently (despite it seeming like it would guarantee show up, there's an item limit, so even though it has a high chance of spawning, it still might get cut off by the item limit).

I bought and then sold back the blueprint for the thieves backpacks. Now it's not showing from what I can tell. Is this a bug or is it just a rare spawn?

Fair enough. Well it's still awesome variety of backpacks and textures are also nice. (: And with hundreds of stored materials actually I don't care whatever it takes to craft:) thanks for the mod!)
2PercentNate  [author] Feb 14, 2024 @ 5:01am
@Dvatrij That's not a simple change. Unlike regular items, there is no "ingredient" option for backpacks, so the materials used to build them are tied to the workstations. I could make several different workstations, but that feels obnoxious, so I'd rather just have the inaccurate crafting costs.

Nice backpacks, yes :)
I've got some thoughts about crafting materials.

Due to description some of them may require steel/iron.
And I think it surely needs fabric.
And maybe wood... (although there are no wood in game, what a shame! xD)

It's not full-leather after all. (:
