Resident Evil REupscale Project (v1.5a)
When the HD remaster released back in 2015 there was some fussing about the remaster's visuals compared to the GameCube original. It was clear that Capcom didn't re-render new backgrounds like they did with the RE0 remaster, and instead cheaply fed them through an upscaler with a wax filter. While the game is at LEAST 1080p, the same could not be said for the handful of pre-rendered FMV cutscenes which play during scripted events. Some looked incredibly compressed and blurry, (especially the pool draining one) as they were originally meant to be shown in a 4:3 aspect ratio and at a much lower resolution.

Luckily a modder by the name of Shiryu took it upon themselves to re-upscale the backgrounds by running the original GameCube ones through Gigapixel and ESRGAN. At its best it matches the RE0 Remaster in terms of quality. This release currently contains more than 1600 replaced textures between gameplay and cutscenes. More detailed comparisons along with info about the project can be found here[reupscaleproject.blogspot.com]

I should note that the pack is not entirely complete so not all the textures have been upscaled. The rooms that Capcom DID re-render in 3D have not been modified.

(Click on images for more detail)

Just for comparison, here is the original HD Remaster versus the REupscaled project + GC Shader w/Film Grain Turned OFF. The improvements speak for themselves.
https://cdn.knightlab.com/libs/juxtapose/latest/embed/index.html?uid=41af5702-a0ae-11ec-b5bb-6595d9b17862
Huge thanks to Shiryu for this work!
Instructions and Download
  1. Download the REupscaled project v1.5a.[reupscaleproject.blogspot.com] Note that it is a 8.5GB download as it replaces almost every BG texture in the game.

  2. a) Copy the folder "nativePC" within the mod archive to:
    "X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER".
Replace any and ALL files when prompted.
    b) The password (if needed) to extract the files is:
    REupscaleproject
  3. That's it! Load up and enjoy REmake with new and improved backgrounds.
The HD Remaster is still a bit of a mess so I would pair this excellent REupscale mod with some others listed below.
GC/Wii Shader Restoration
To download and find out more about the mod check out the creator, Masterotaku's Steam Thread on the shader.
This real-time graphics mod adds hotkeys to disable the contrast boosting shader responsible for crushing the blacks in this remaster. Instead it replicates the gamma levels we saw in the GameCube/Wii release while balancing the lighting and enabling the option to remove film grain.

When installed, options for the Noise, Colour and the Fog filter are bound to F1-F3 respectively. With those F1-F3 effects disabled, the overall improvement seen in terms of restored background detail is well worth it. Cutscenes DO require the fog to be acceptable, as without it the image is blurred, but this is as simple as toggling F3 on and off between cutscenes.

Again, a comparison[cdn.knightlab.com](with the REupscale mod of course) against the original.
Huge thanks to masterotaku!

Instructions
  1. Download the mod here.
  2. Unzip the contents of that file into the root folder of the game,
    "X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER".

Hotkeys (by default all effects are untouched):

F1: Noise Filter toggle.
F2: Black Crush/Color Filter toggle.
F3: Fog toggle. You should toggle back to the default setting for in-game cutscenes, or else there will be a broken depth-of-field effect.
F4: Bloom toggle (effect not present in many places). Can be fun to see how objects emit light but also disables the map and menu graphics, so if you want to try it, make sure it's only when you're controlling your character.

There is a "profiles" folder made with two different "DX9Settings.ini". One of them is the default one, and the other has the noise filter, color filter and fog disabled by default.

              ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────

If you're using the FPS Fix Mod, which is also a "d3d9.dll", rename it to something else and uncomment the-
ProxyLib = "I:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER\fpsfix.dll"
-line in "DX9Settings.ini", writing the correct path to the renamed dll.
RE Mod Manager
Since a lot of these next mods require backing-up original files and manually swapping between them, this Mod Manager Tool developed by FluffyQuack instead makes modding REmake take seconds rather than minutes. No need to worry about keeping backups as this tool automatically takes the original files and restores them when a mod is uninstalled. It doesn't just support RE HD either! If you've ever modded any of the RE Engine games then you'll be familiar with FluffyQuack's mod manager.

Huge thanks again to FluffyQuack, his tool certainly made testing out a few of these mods MUCH easier for me. Go support the talented bloke on patreon[www.patreon.com] and twitch![www.twitch.tv]

FluffyQuacks Steam guide. Go check it out!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=602693012 I've labeled each mod with a specific category and their compatibility with the Fluffy Manager 5000 below, so you can easily see if they're able to be automatically installed by the manager, and so I don't have to say so for each one.

           ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Use these tags as a guide to installing them, whether automatically with the Fluffy Manager if they're compatible, or manually using the steps provided if they're incompatible. I will still include MANUAL instructions for specific mods below if you want to do it that way too.

Download
Download the latest version of Fluffy Manager 5000 here: https://residentevilmodding.boards.net/thread/507/fluffy-manager-5000

Instructions
Simply unpack it to anywhere on your hard drive (ideally in an easy to access place like your Documents or Desktop folder), then run modmanager.exe to install it. Maybe make a shortcut for the program on your desktop while you're at it. Be sure to launch the "Updater.exe" every once in a while to make sure the program is up to date.

To install mods that are compatible with the mod manager, it's as simple as drag and dropping your mod (.rar file) into the program as shown with me installing this OG Jill Outfit. You can then easily activate/deactivate them at any time.

You can then easily activate/deactivate them at any time. Of course there are rare exceptions where mods seem like they should be compatible when they aren't, but I will include instructions for the few that do require manual installation.
If you're having issues simply drag and dropping compatible .rar files into the window, make sure you don't have the file open in programs such as WinRAR or 7-ZIP. You can also try either running the manager as Administrator, or placing the .rar file in FluffyManager\Games\REHD\Mods (same place you installed the program).

If the mod is compatible with the manager, but contained within a .zip file, you will need to unzip it and place the extracted folder in the "Mods" folder wherever you placed the mod manager (same place as the Modmanager.exe). For example mine is in D:\modmanager\Games\REHD\Mods\.

I want to install this Master Chief Mod replacing Chris, right... Dragging and dropping it straight into the program didn't work, so I extracted the .zip file and placed the folder in the "Mods" folder as shown instead.
Fixed Background Music and SFX
This mod fixes the volume and speed of the soundtrack, which in the HD Remaster was dramatically sped up and pitched higher, for whatever reason. If you're familiar with the original it just sounds incredibly weird and this mod instead drops normalized GameCube tracks in their place.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀   Original release                                HD Remaster

This mod can be easily downloaded and installed by FluffyQuack's "Fluffy Manager 5000", download for that here.[residentevilmodding.boards.net]

Simply click "Choose Game" > "Resident Evil HD" >"Downloads">"Fixed BGms" Once the download has completed you can then easily install the mod by selecting it in the Mod List menu.

Manual Installation
  1. Download Mr. Bunny's mod here[residentevilmodding.boards.net].
  2. Locate your HD Remaster installation directory,
    e.g. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER\.
  3. Open BGM Fix (UPDATED).rar using programs such as 7-Zip[www.7-zip.org]or WinRAR[www.win-rar.com] and extract its contents to the <gamedir>\nativePC\sound\bgm\wav subdirectory in the nativePC folder.
  4. Overwrite any existing files with the same name, select Yes to All.
  5. Optional: Backup a copy of the \wav folder to preserve the default music files in case something goes wrong. Otherwise, you'll have to verify the game files with Steam or perform a reinstall to restore the defaults.
  6. Enjoy the game with the corrected background music!

-Credit to Bunny for restoring this game’s soundtrack to its former glory!

Magnum SFX Restoration
This mod by Sonny Bauer restores the previously botched sound effects for the .357 Magnum and Barry's .44 Magnum using the GC/Wii samples. Simply download the file and install using the Fluffy Mod manager as usual and you're good to go.

Comparison

Door Skip mod - RE1 HD Remaster / RE0 HD Remaster
Depending on how you see things, this mod may be essential to your enjoyment of REmake. I personally don’t mind the door animations in classic RE, though I understand why many players find them annoying, especially when backtracking. There are a few options for mods to skip doors but any one will greatly improve transition times between rooms. Normal door animations last 7.6 seconds, both author's mods will reduce them to roughly 2.2 seconds.

See for yourself!

For this mod you have 3 options.
  1. A standalone mod by user ThirteenAG (doesn't require activation every time on startup)
  2. Another standalone version by FluffyQuack (requires activation every time on startup)
  3. Via a trainer built into FluffyQuack's Mod manager 5000 (see section below for more on that).
Option 1 (ThirteenAG's Standalone Mod)
This mod by ThirteenAG skips all door animations in the game. It's worth noting that this mod can also be used for the RE0 HD remaster on Steam.
  1. Download the mod here[github.com].
  2. Open the RE0.RE1.DoorSkipPlugin.zip then extract the files (dinput8.dll and Scripts folder) into your game directory: \Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER
Your folder should then look like this.

Option 2 (FluffQuack's Standalone Mod)
  1. Download the mod here[github.com]
  2. Place in game folder (SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER) and do any one of the following:
a) Run the exe, then run the game. The tool will wait for the game to start and then automatically apply the mod.
b) Run the game, then run the tool. The tool will instantly apply the mod.
c) Run the tool with the "-launchRE1" or "-launchRE0" command line argument and it'll start RE1 HD or RE0 HD for you, then wait for the game to fully startup before applying the mod.

The mod is then deactivated whenever you quit the game.

Trainer
With the mod manager open and game running, simply click "Choose Game" > "Resident Evil HD" > "Trainer" >"Skip Doors"

-Notes
  • You will most likely receive a "Windows protected your PC" warning if you decide to use FluffyQuack's mod. Run the tool anyway. FluffyQuack recently uploaded a new version of the mod which should finally convince most anti-virus programs that it's safe.
  • The door skip mod ONLY works with the latest release available on Steam.
  • Both mods do not disable achievements.

Huge thanks to both ThirteenAG and FluffyQuack again for these mods. Definitely check out Fluffy's guide and Youtube!

UI and Icon Improvements
This mod offers a higher resolution UI and redone icons for almost all items, using the in-game 3D models instead of the poorly upscaled originals. It also includes a font mod, which replicates the kind of typewriter font seen in the GameCube version. The font mod only supports the English, Spanish and Japanese versions, but the UI Icon pack works with ALL versions of the game. -(Check under Update, May 16, 2016 Icon Improvements, v.1.01).

You can pick which ones you want if either are not to your liking, as the Font and Improved Icons mods are separate.

If your language is not included above but want the GameCube-Style Font, this[residentevilmodding.boards.net] similar mod by Mr. Bunny should do the trick for all languages. (Can be installed with Fluffy's Mod Manager)

FPS Fix
This mod may dramatically increase FPS if you're experiencing framerate or slowdown issues on low end hardware. It works by removing an unneeded call to query the game for its current state every frame and should alleviate any problems with performance.

Download and Installation
  1. Download Resident Evil HD Remaster fps fix [community.pcgamingwiki.com]
  2. Copy the d3d9.dll file to your game installation folder. This is commonly located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil

PlayStation Button Prompts

This mod by vectorunit0 rips the prompts from the PS3 version to give us the PlayStation buttons Capcom never gave us. This is a godsend and essential to anyone that uses a PS controller...
  1. Download here[residentevilmodding.boards.net]
  2. Copy the NativePC folder from the mod archive into your Resident Evil installation folder, located at X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER. Overwrite any files if asked.

Make sure you BACKUP the old files if you wanna go back to the Xbox 360 buttons this game uses by default.
1996 Resident Evil Mods (PS1 Models and SFX)
This section is dedicated to these special mods which get us as close to that 1996 original. From SFX to full character and enemy models, you can choose how C H O N K Y and nostalgic you want this game to be.

1996 Character + Enemy models
Modder ΛLISTΞR has modeled and rigged almost every character and enemy to look just like the PS1 originals and is perfect with the other 1996 mods down below.
With this mod you can choose to either download a "Characters" pack (which is just characters) an "Enemy" pack (which is just the enemies) or the "Complete Pack" (which is both).

Backup your original files first!
This is always good practice as it means you don't have to be re-downloading the original game files EVERY time you're finished with a mod.
  1. Make a folder named something like "Original Models REHD" and put it in a safe place.

  2. Then make 2 separate folders within that one specifically for the Character and Enemy models.

  3. The folder that contains the Player models is locate at
    X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER\nativePC\arc\pl
Press CTRL + A to select all the files and copy and paste them into your OG Character Model Backup Folder.

  4. The folder that contains the Enemy models is locate at
    X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER\nativePC\arc\em
Press CTRL + A to select all the files and copy and paste them into your OG Enemy Model Backup Folder.

*IMPORTANT* You're going to install/drag and drop all of the audio mods into Fluffy Manager 5000. Do NOT drag and drop the Character + Enemy Models packs. Those must be installed manually.

Installing
This mod needs to be installed manually so pay close attention to the instructions and what directories you're installing the mod to.
  1. Download the Original 1996 Models here[residentevilmodding.boards.net]

  2. Making sure you're in the nativePC\arc\pl sub-directory, copy and paste all the Character files from the mod archive. Overwrite all files when prompted.
  3. Making sure you're in the nativePC\arc\em sub-directory, copy and paste all the Enemy files from the mod archive. Overwrite all files when prompted.
1996 Original OST

  3. If it doesn't appear hit "Refresh mod list" and install it from the list.

1996 Main Title Screen and Voice Announcer
Modder Dralkkin has lovingly recreated the classic Resident Evil main title screen and announcer. This mod goes great with all the other '96' mods and sets the mood for the rest of the game. This mod is NOT compatible with the Fluffy Manager and must be installed manually, so make backups.

*Note: this mod currently only supports and works with the English, French and Spanish versions of the game.

Installing
  1. Download the mod here[residentevilmodding.boards.net]
  2. Copy and paste the nativePC folder from the mod archive into the main "Resident Evil Biohazard HD REMASTER" folder

Cosmetic Mods (Skin/Model edits)
Retcon Pack

This mod's goal is to improve textures and to maintain coherence/consistency between the look of the characters in REmaster. It makes subtle changes to things such as characters eyes and their S.T.A.R.S outfits through absurd attention to detail. It also improves Chris and Jill within the character selection and ending screens, matching the changes made to their models. If there's any cosmetic mod you should should play with, it's this one by Bloodyhunter ...
Changes
  • Jill S.T.A.R.S.
Jill wears a blue outfit in the FMVs and in most renders of that outfit. It was also supposed to be that way when the game was about to be released on GameCube.

  • Chris S.T.A.R.S.
Chris's design has actually been pretty inconsistent since the beginning of the franchise despite having the same face since REmake ( let's not think about RE7 ...) Sometimes his eyes are blue, sometimes brown and his hair sometimes very dark, sometimes brown so two versions are now available to let you chose your preferred version.

  • Rebecca S.T.A.R.S.
Based on her renders from RE0 remaster. Her textures from RE0 are reused, except for the skin, gloves, belt buckle and boots. Bloodyhunter mostly just kept the original textures and adjusted their colour, taking that opportunity to fix the tiny points of black stuff that could be seen on the grey part of the boots.

  • Barry
His eyes look hazel in Revelations 2 so they're reused here.

  • Richard
RPD logo on his t-shirt is replaced by the one from RE2 Remake.

Jill Original Blue S.T.A.R.S Outfit
In the remake, Jill's S.T.A.R.S outfit seems to have a slight greenish tint rather than blue. Similar to the Retcon Pack, this mod tries to match the colours we saw in the 1996 original and in box art.

RE3 Cop Jill Outfit
Replaces Jill RE3/"Casual" Costume with the S.T.A.R.S Cop uniform seen in the original RE3. Note that you'll need to have beaten the game twice with Jill to have unlocked the 'Casual' costume which this mod replaces.

The mod author also accidentally left a Dr. Disrespect Character select screen picture in the mod, so if you see...that, no worries.

Ashley Graham
What?! A new challenger... Ashley Graham screams into battle!
Replaces Jill's "Army" (Sarah Connor) costume with Ashley so you have the option as both Jill and her. This is an excellent mod and is probably my favourite out of all the cosmetic ones. The model is fully animated down to facial animations and it's clear so much effort was put into it. 10/10

*Note: You'll have to unlock the closet key first by completing either Jill or Chris' story modes once and then twice with either on the SAME save file.
Download here[residentevilmodding.boards.net]

Textures seen in my screenshot of Ashley above are slightly different and come from user izacky. Link for that version here[residentevilmodding.boards.net].
-Master Chief
Finish the Fight...
Replaces BSAA costume Chris with the legendary tea-bagging, Mountain Dew'n Dorito, MLG, alien-killing all star. To change into Chris's BSAA outfit just select it in the character selection screen during a new save. You can also access it mid-save via the costume room, albeit with the Closet Key obtained by beating the game once.

REHD Randomizer
If you want to relive that sensation of being completely lost then this randomizer by bennpowell is for you. This randomizer allows you to randomize the items, enemies and even doors in the game so as you can choose how "random" you want your playthrough to be.

It can get pretty insane at times, allowing for some pretty crazy sequence breaking while still guaranteeing that all items are collectible. This is for hardcore players who have played through the game multiple times and know the layout of mansion pretty well, enjoy!
You can find the mod at: http://benn-gaming.co.uk/rerandomizer.html

Forum post: https://residentevilmodding.boards.net/thread/8673/resident-evil-remaster-enemy-randomizer

This mod will require a lot of backtracking so I'd recommend pairing it with the doors-skip mod simply because you'll probably spend a LOT of time running back and forth as you learn how items are laid out and begin to work towards actually completing the game. Note that events still only happen when their specific trigger is met e.g. hunters won't appear until AFTER you re-enter the mansion and if you've killed Plant 42. Barry/Wesker also won't give you items or fix the door until AFTER you get the Armor Key or kill Plant 42.
Conclusion

Thank you so much for viewing my guide! I hope you found some mods interesting and that you tried a few out for yourself.

Again, I must thank all the modder mentioned in this guide who have prolonged this remaster's lifespan beyond its release.
