Description

Built from scratch by die-hard Half-Life fans, Half-Life 2: Remade Assets aims to provide the Source 2 community with a variety of high-quality assets.

Our assets and prefabs are built from the ground-up for VR gameplay, and contain assets that are both direct remasters of those found in the Half-Life 2 trilogy, and entirely original assets themed around Half-Life’s world, all designed to provide variety and further flesh out the setting.

As a tight-knit group of talented individuals from a number of unique backgrounds, we always strive for perfection and aim to perfect our craft. Half-Life 2: Remade Assets represents an enormous undertaking for everybody involved, and we continue to improve every day. With each pack that’s released, we look forward to raising the bar ourselves, and seeing what the community creates with what we’re able to give.

Features

Half-Life 2: Remade Assets is designed in a way that’s intended to make it as easy as possible to use, while providing the highest quality assets. Features include:

  • Matching file paths from Half-Life 2, allowing for easier porting of Source 1 .vmfs
  • Assets designed with VR gameplay in mind, including:
  • Handposes for assets where we expect player interaction
  • Interactive prefabs for assets such as cabinets and drawers, desktop items, and other machinery
  • Additional original assets themed around the Half-Life world
  • Including assets that were originally brushwork or textures in Source 1, given new life and made VR-ready in current-gen Source 2

A full list of all assets contained in this particular pack can be found here.[docs.google.com]

Per community request this pack also includes an additional showcase map, with included source files. Play through the Half-Life: Alyx addon menu to see these assets in a game environment, or open up the included .vmap to to see how they were put together.

Setup Guide
To play the included showcase map:
  1. Subscribe to this pack and allow Steam to download it fully
  2. Start Half-Life: Alyx
  3. In the main menu, navigate to "manage addons" and enable this addon
  4. Start a new game on the "showcase_hl2ra_part4" map through the "enabled addons" menu
  5. Enjoy!

To use these assets in another addon:
  1. Subscribe to this pack and allow Steam to download it fully
  2. Locate the VPK file named "2696793186" in "steamapps\workshop\content\546560\2696793186"
  3. Extract it using a tool such as VRF[vrf.steamdb.info]
  4. Place materials and models folders in "steamapps\common\Half-Life Alyx\game\hlvr_addons\[your_addon]"
  5. Place all other folders in "steamapps\common\Half-Life Alyx\content\hlvr_addons\[your_addon]"
  6. If this pack contains soundevents, add the appropriate soundevent files to a .vrman file in your addon's directory. A guide to this process can be found here.
  7. Open your addon in Half-Life: Alyx's workshop tools.

That's it! At this point, all assets should be visible from the asset browser, and usable in your addon!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I’ve found a bug I’d like to report, or I’d like to provide feedback. Where is the best place to post a report?
A: We highly value any feedback we can get! Our devs are most active on our Discord Discord[discord.gg] server, so we encourage you to post any feedback or bug reports there, where they’re most likely to be seen.

Q: Can I use these assets in my addon for Half-Life: Alyx or even on a different engine?
A: If your project is not monetized, yes! However, please keep in mind that our assets will be officially supported only for the Half-Life: Alyx branch of Source 2. If you’re interested in seeking additional support for other engines, or have questions about monetization, please reach out to us at project17dev@gmail.com.

Q: If you’re remaking models from Half-Life 2, are you remaking levels as well?
A: Half-Life 2: Remade Assets is not remaking any environments itself. However, we’re developing a sister project, Project 17, in tandem with Half-Life 2: Remade Assets. If you’re interested in following that project, we encourage you to join our Discord[discord.gg] and follow us on Twitter!

@d.grunert These addons are primarily for map creators to use higher quality HL2 assets in their custom maps. Some examples of maps using them include C17YSCAPE Update Parts 1 & 2 (embedded in the map) and Monomyth (requires Parts 1-3 of this collection to be downloaded and activated). As an added bonus, the team added a playable map to the 4th part, so you can see a showcase of some of the newest assets. That's not typical, and if you look at other asset packs they generally do not include a playable map within. Again, this is just for developers and has already been used in numerous places. I recommend trying to find all of the Easter eggs in the embedded Part 4 map and then maybe check out Monomyth if you haven't yet. After that you can hang on to them if you have the space or just uninstall all 4 parts and reinstall if you need them in the future.

Unfortunately, despite the download of 4 parts with 2.5 GB, I can only start the fourth part. The other parts are displayed in the addons manager, but not in the maps that are queried when you want to start a new game. only part 4 is displayed, it also loads, but without any playful content, it's just a map that is very nicely designed, but nothing happens, nothing to work on.... why, what for? Is this a mod to continue working on?
Could someone please explain to me how I can fix the loading problem? This is not the first time what I have described above has happened to me. That's a disappointment for the loading quantities, especially since I unfortunately don't have a fast internet connection.

Absolutely! We love seeing our work being used by the community, whether it's in S2FM or other modding projects. The only restriction is our assets can't be redistributed as part of a commercial/paid product.

i wonder if you still answer questions,
if you do, are you okay with creators using these models for scenebuilds in S2FM?

Also, I forgot to mention, it seemed like the food rations packet was casting a checkerboard shadow. I'm not sure if that is an issue with the asset itself or an issue with the environment.

Incredible work! I have one small nitpick / suggestion: I think it would be much better if the full day bread substitute rations pack used the same metallic blue & maroon color scheme that the HL:A rations use (desicated sustinance bar / gelatinated calorie paste). While the colors you have used are certainly closer to what they were in HL2 (more purple / red), they are so close to the HL:A colors that is seems annoying that they don't match. In order to seamlessly integrate remade assets into the hi-res world of HL:A, I think graphic cohesion between all of the food rations would be a better choice. You have already taken many liberties with the recreation of your assets (you have to!), so I think shifting the colors of the rations packets to match their HL:A counterparts is the best choice. Thanks again for your contributions to the community.
