Introduction
Hello!

Welcome to my guide for Fallout 4 and how to fix various bugs for the best vanilla experience possible and stable modding foundation. Every step that I have listed are the steps I personally use to make my game run much more smoother and with less bugs on my PC system.

If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments below and I will be sure to assist in any way that I can! Constructive feedback is also welcome!

And remember that Bethesda....Bethesda never changes.

This guide is intended to be used with game version Patch 1.34 and with all DLC installed, this guide was not made to be used with the game version Patch 1.33 and under. Edit at your own risk if using game version Patch 1.33 and under. Some mods will require some of the game DLC.

It is highly recommended for you to also install 7-zip[www.7-zip.org] as most mods and tools use this format for compression when uploaded for download.

LIKE ANY TYPE OF GAME GUIDE THAT MAKES YOU EDIT THE GAME FILES ALWAYS, ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES BEFORE STARTING!

Game Version 1.10.163
THIS GUIDE IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH GAME VERSION
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀1.10.163!!

F4SE mods need to have the "1.10.163" version downloaded if provided by the mod author.

All F4SE mods features on this guide have a 1.10.163 version available or are compatible!

Please use Simple Fallout 4 Downgrader[www.nexusmods.com] before starting!
Step 1 - Installing F4SE
F4SE is a script extender for Fallout 4 and is Essential to getting started with modding Fallout 4.

Step 1 - First you will need to download f4se HERE[f4se.silverlock.org] Download the version "0.6.23" for Fallout 4 runtime 1.10.16

Once at the site click on the latest build version to download

Step 2 - Once downloaded go into the games directory, the game should be installed at... "Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4"

Once there open the .7z file and extract the contents of the download into the games main directory with a simple drag and drop

Step 3 - F4SE is now installed.
Step 2 - Installing Mod Organizer 2
Basic knowledge of how to use a mod manager is required for this guide and for this guide we are going to be using "Mod Organizer 2". This is how to set up Mod Organizer 2 as a "Portable" version.

To run Mod Organizer 2 you will need the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable you can download it from HERE![docs.microsoft.com]

Step 1 - Download Mod Organizer From Here[github.com].

Once on the site click the top listed version and this link to download

Step 2 - Once downloaded Place Mod Organizer 2 into a separate or newly created folder.

Step 3 - Go into your newly made folder and extract all of the contents inside the "Mod Organizer 2" .7z download file into the newly created folder.

Once extracted into the folder double click on ModOrganizer.exe

Step 4 - You will be greeted by this window click on the button in the top left corner called "Create New Instance"

Once clicked on you will see this window click on the "Create Portable Instance" button.

Once clicked find "Fallout 4" in the list of games (you should have the game downloaded) once found click on it and press "Next"

Next you will see this click "Next".

Next you will be greeted by this window continue by clicking next, also make sure that "Automatic Archive Invalidation" is selected.

Then after this screen click on "Finish".

After doing this Mod Organizer 2 will launch.

Step 5 - After doing this for easy use/access to the tool create a shortcut for you desktop by right clicking on the "ModOrganizer.exe" file and selecting "Create Shortcut"

Next move the shortcut onto your desktop and rename it by right clicking and selecting rename.

Step 6 - Mod Organizer 2 is ready to use with Fallout 4!

While Running Mod Organizer 2 For the first time you will be greeted by this little window...

Click YES! This will make it easy to download and install mods!

Step 3 - Border-less Window Mode

Step 1: At the top of the window on the bar there should be a jigsaw puzzle icon click this.

then select edit "INI Editor"

Step 2: After a window will open called "INI files" select the tab called Fallout4Custom.ini it should have the last step we did still present on it.

Step 3: once in the tab paste the text under the lines we added in the previous steps
[Display] iSize H=2160 iSize W=3840 bBorderless=1 bFull Screen=0

Note: put in you screens resolution into iSize H and iSizeW mine is 4k which are the numbers shown.

It should look like this

Step 4 - Once done click save and close the window.
Step 4 - Cleaning Vanilla Files
When using tools like LOOT to organise your load order you may notice that some of the vanilla plugin files have ITM records and LOOT says they need to be cleaned!

The vanilla version of the game files come packaged with some dirty edits or "identical to master records" (ITM) that Bethesda has left in these files. With FO4Edit these files can be easily cleaned. If mod plugin files are reported by LOOT to have some ITM records report it to the mods respective mod authors on the mods page.

Step 1 - Now you will need to download FO4Edit, it can be downloaded from HERE![www.nexusmods.com]

Once FO4Edit has been downloaded extract it somewhere you will remember like inside a folder or the documents folder.

Step 2 - Next step is to run FO4Edit in FO4Edit Quick Auto Clean mode. Going to FO4Edits extracted location make sure to click the executable called "FO4EditQuickAutoClean.exe"! to open it!

Once the program opens up you will be greeted by this window with all the games plugins like this. (The red lined ones are Creation club and do not need cleaning/may not be there for you)

Next you will need to select a plugin to clean, once selected press "Ok" in the bottom right corner.
ONLY SELECTING ONE PLUGIN AT A TIME WHILE CLEANING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Once completed the program will say this...

The program can now be closed and the plugin is now clean!
Each dirty plugin will need to be cleaned the same way separately.
Step 5 - Bug Fixing Mods
Below Are all the bug fixing mods that fix various things from engine related bugs to game-play and scripting bugs.

@andy - Only mods that have MCM support will show up under the MCM menu in game to tweak settings. all of the mods will be loaded but in the mods tab only the mods that have compatibility with MCM settings menu will show there. Most mods have if they support MCM in their descriptions on their respective pages. :cozybethesda:

@Tetragromaton - rtx cards and the driver updates that are required for them to work are known to not work particularly well with fallout 4. You could try rolling back to nvidia driver version v442.92 and below if its supports rtx cards. its up to Bethesda or nvidia to fix the card incompatibilities like this unfortunately.

@Tetragromaton - Thats an interesting bug, looks like most likely could be your GPU what game drivers are you using and what graphics card do you have? Fallout 4 is known for not playing well with newer driver updates. Also could be corrupted game data files or modded files. Although most likely looking like a graphics card issue.
