- Added setting for the "move in close on sleeping animals" behaviour

Hunters will consider the current conditions before and during hunting.

Things which affect the decision to hunt:

Toxic fallout
Distance to target
Target's size (big or small game)
Whether the target is a predator (likely to attack back) and whether they are sleeping
Their own needs (food and rest)
Their own movement efficiency
Their own eyesight
Outdoor temperature
Current stocks of edible nutrition

If some of these in combination would make hunting more dangerous or much less efficient or negatively affect their mood, the hunter will skip that target or the job entirely. The reason why will be listed on the right-click menu.

In particular, if stocks of food are low, hunters will ignore their needs in favour of increasing the food stock level.

Hunters with sight worse than 55% will not do any hunting even if they are assigned.

Things which affect the distance they will try to maintain when shooting:

In previous versions, hunters would choose a range from the target which was an arbitrary percentage of the weapon's maximum range. In this version they will choose a range which suits the weapon they have in hand.
If the target is not currently downed and would explode on death, the hunter will potentially add an extra four tiles of safety range to account for the target moving towards the hunter.
Weather (fog in particular) reduces the distance.
The Trigger Happy trait reduces the distance a bit as well.
If the target is asleep, the hunter will move to the same close range they would if an animal is downed.

There is an option in the mod settings menu for Hunting Restriction called "Haul hunting targets that explode." By default it is unchecked. Leaving this unchecked means that you will need to have another pawn beat out the fire around and on a boomalope or boomrat corpse before it can be collected. Or by checking this option, hunters will do as they do in vanilla and potentially catch fire while retrieving their kill.

New! There are options to enable melee hunting for various sizes of game (big, medium, or small) and to enable hunting predators (turned off by default). Note that your hunter's fight or flee setting will still apply when the hunted animal fights back.

Don't comment asking when the mod will update.

Comments regarding mod updates have become a nuisance. I can understand that people get excited and post before they think or read, but I have social media, go and check there to see if I have posted about RimWorld. You will be saving me a lot of time.

A small issue I ran into with this mod: a Megasloth, which is not a predator but has 50% revenge chance, combined with the "shoot at point blank when sleeping" lead to, well, the obvious outcome of a downed pawn. It would be perfect for the sleeping option to be disallowed on anything with a revenge chance. Is that even feasible? idk, I'm not a modder.

I also have this issue - in the logs, the only entries for this mod are when it's doing its patching for the workgivers. If I remove the mod, the pawns can hunt a raccoon. If I add it back, the raccoon is suddenly given "explodes on death" status.

Not sure what could be causing the conflict; I can try to tinker with mod combos. In the interim, I did want to add my voice to the group, even if I can't make an "official" report since I'm not seeing anything weird in the logs (not that I'd know the best, since I'm not the modmaker, but still).

@Mile. Seems I'm late to the party, but I'm having the same issue. All potential melee hunting targets are flagged as exploding. I'm not sure where this is happening, I'm not great at reading the debug but I don't think there was anything about it; trying to select them as a target also doesn't generate a log.

My one idea is possibly dlc/vanilla conflict of some sort? Wish I could help more : /

@Brumm Bär Well, it does not happen with only this mod and Harmony loaded so not sure what you mean by it being incompatible with harmony.
I have yet to see any actual report of this, either here or on the Discord server.
Brumm Bär Oct 28, 2024 @ 6:18am
@mile it seems that the mod is incompatible with harmony
......
no matter what you try to hunt you just get a "can´t hunt becouse explodes on death"
so you can´t hunt at all
.....
that is the issue that DraconisG describes and that i talked about in september and about 2 years ago
Brumm Bär Oct 28, 2024 @ 6:16am
@DraconisG
just use Tweaks Galore
Mile is very busy with the countless mods he keeps alive
......
Mlie  [author] Oct 9, 2024 @ 10:16am
@DraconisG Not sure I understand the issue here. What are you trying to hunt and with what weapon?
DraconisG Oct 8, 2024 @ 8:09pm
I am also running into the same problem. I have taken my mod list down to Core, Harmony, and this mod only, and checked all the settings, and I still get the "Cant hunt because animal explodes on death" error, so there is absolutely something broken in this mod.
Brumm Bär Sep 7, 2024 @ 11:44pm
well thank you anyway love your work
to keep the old mods alive
i try to find out what mod it is incompatible with
Mlie  [author] Sep 7, 2024 @ 5:45am
@Brumm Bär As stated, works with only this mod loaded
