Anemoia

It was kinda bound to happen that I would continue the Anemoia skin on some other weapons after it being received so well by the community. I decided to try and make an Anemoia skin for the MAC-10 this time because last time I did a CT only weapon, and now the T's get their own weapon. With this design I tried to explore the concept a bit more and work with the new geometry of the MAC-10. I experiented a bit more with baking 3D details on the plain geometry and it was a lot of fun to say the least. I hope you like this one just as much as the M4A4!

Work Process

This time I did not need to come up with a whole direction I wanted to take, because the groundwork was already out there. I first masked the area's out that were paint, and the ones that were the greyish plastic/metal. This is where I started to realize some less fun things that are happening on the UVSheet of the MAC-10. Because the tip of the barrel is on the same island as the circle that connects to the little flippy thing at the bottom I could not paint the barrel orange. I decided to work around this by having the paint scratch of at the front which blended it in nicely, and didn't look weird with the overlapping islands.

When it came to modelling I decided to kick it up a notch this time. See what I could do after getting acquinted with it in my last skin. This resulted in extra details for the magazine, grip, and the flippy thing. The grip was the one that took the most fiddling around because I wasn't quite sure what was working, do I make part of it orange, or just leave it completely grey? Below you can find one of the version I had during the work phase.

I ended up going for a more realistic looking grip and added some screws to it to make it stand out a bit more. I made the grippie bits a little darker to give a bit more pop, but after that it looked pretty neat. Then the little strap at the front. I wanted to go for a bit of a nylon like string but quickly learned that if I made the normal strong for the in-game viewmodel it would look almost wet and weird in the inventory. After playing with some values I decided to go with the current one where it is the best of both worlds. I ended up really liking the strap design on this gun.

Then the drawings. The drawings were a bit more difficult to work with this time becacuse even though the MAC-10 seems to have a rather flat surface area there is still some geometry that will mess with the perspective of your drawings. I initially sketched my mountains way too low and this started messing a lot with the perspective in first- and third person. Below you can find a picture of it.

To fix this I drew the mountains higher up which also complemented the geometry of the MAC-10 more. I also realized that the brush I used to draw the silhouette made the drawings very rough and sadly enough, a bit strange. So I went over it with a regular brush which luckily made it look better. I filled up some empty space with a broken tree and was good to go. I then fixed some small issues, made the alpha map so the wear is good, and then published it to the workshop.

Last Words

I'm happy with how the skin turned out and will be posting a purple and blue version to the workshop later when I get to making them. Making the skin was a lot of fun and I feel like I'm becoming more confident in using all the programs that 4 months ago seemed rather difficult to use. I will probably make a version for the M4A1-s at some point, but also want to look at some different skin ideas that I have been working on.

In the meantime, stay healthy, make sure to wash your hands, play some CS:GO and look after yourselves! :)

Love,

Hollandje
