Era - 1980s / 1990s - Boxing - Heavyweight

The protege of the great Joe Frazier, taking his mentorship and nickname in the ring, Smokin' Bert Cooper was an all action mainstay in the Heavyweight division of the 80s and 90s. While Cooper struggled with consistency and generally lost against top level opponents, he packed enough of a punch and showed enough heart in defeat to continue to take on notable foes.

Born in Sharon Hill, PA in 1966, Cooper was a product of the famed Philadelphia fight scene and Joe Frazier's gym. He would turn pro in 1984 and two years later, went on to win a second tier Cruiserweight title in an upset against then-undefeated Olympic Gold Medalist, Henry Tillman. A move up to Heavyweight would result in losses to the likes of Carl "The Truth" Williams and the comeback version of George Foreman, along with other lesser opponents. A win against Orlin Norris preceeded a tough loss to Ray Mercer and a second round knockout by the hands of Riddick Bowe.

Cooper's problems with substance abuse would have an effect on his performances, but he still managed two of the most exciting Heavyweight title fights of the 90s against Evander Holyfield, the first man to knock Holyfield down in his career, in a losing effort, and a year later in 1992, knocked Michael Moorer down twice in an eventual defeat.

In 1994, Cooper fought Joe Savage, a UK based, undefeated bare knuckle boxer, and despite the hype surrounding Savage from certain quarters, Cooper utterly obliterated his rotund opponent within a single round.
