Tavern and Honey Tweaks

In 1 collection by Nemo Jr.

Description
Wheat required to make Ale reduced from 100 to 50. Mead (Honey Ale) added to Tavern (18 Honey can be turned into 10 Ale). Honey production reduced to 1/4, value increased from 1 to 3.

Tavern:

With this mod, turning Wheat into Ale becomes actually profitable, instead of a net loss. Also, with the addition of Mead (Honey Ale), and the changes to Honey, there are some interesting choices to make now; details in the notes section below.

Honey:

With this mod, Honey is now more of a supplementary food (and a great trade commodity), instead of an automatic "You Win!" item; details in the notes section below.

-rant-

Apiary in its vanilla state isn't just powerful, it's broken. And I'm saying this as someone who likes to play games a bit on the easier side.

With vanilla numbers, compared to a wheat farmer, one beekeeper can produce roughly twice the food in half the space! Food that's instantly available and indifferent to weather (unlike farms) which counts as all 4 food groups, to boot! And it only gets more ridiculous as you keep adding workers, since the area stays the same.

Even worse, there's something else I've observed, and I'm pretty sure it's a bug: If you add a 4th worker (max capacity), the yearly production per worker jumps from an already outrageous 1440 to an absolutely bonkers 2624! Yes, thats 10496 pieces of the best food in the game per year, with 4 workers in an 8x7 building. It's not even funny at that point.

(My Worker Tweaks mod addresses the last part by reducing the max capacity of Apiary to 3, which makes it much easier to balance.)

-end of rant-

Compatibility & Recommendations
- Load this mod above: Building Example (Apiary) -- any conflicts with that mod are intended (or accounted for).

- Any conflicts with my Placement Restrictions mods can safely be ignored. Tested them together; all is well.

- This mod changes the whole production section in the Tavern file, and anything worth changing in the Honey file. In case of conflict, you'll need to place this mod higher, if you want these changes.

- Mod includes minimum required stuff from Building Example mod, and seems to work without it (can buy Honey from traders and turn it into Ale), but wasn't heavily tested that way. Besides, there isn't much point to having this mod and not the Apiary, so just get it if you haven't.

- Pairs well with my Trade Tweaks mod.

Other Notes & Details
With these new numbers, Honey is great for trade-focused towns with limited space (or trade in general), but it won't be enough on its own to support a growing town's food needs. Besides, the discrepancy between total food vs. total value vs. profitability enables some long production chains for the biggest bucks, without introducing a whole bunch of new items.

e.g. You can make Honey, turn it into Ale, sell it for Fruit, turn the Fruit into Ale, and then sell the Fruit Ale for the highest profit. Or, you can sell the Honey as-is (still quite lucrative) while your Taverns are busy chewing through your excess Wheat/Fruit reserves.

Math time:

Assuming... ...the Apiary is at 3 workers, ...wheat is grown in 3 ideal (11x11) fields with 1 worker each, ...fruit is grown in 3 ideal (15x4) vanilla orchards with 1 worker each, ...ideal weather conditions, then, with the new numbers: Food produced per worker per year: Wheat (868) > Fruit (520) > Honey (360) Food produced per tile per worker per year: Honey (19.3) > Fruit (8.7) > Wheat (7.2) Total food produced by 3 workers per year: Wheat (2604) > Fruit (1560) > Honey (1080) Total trade value produced by 3 workers per year: Honey (3240) > Wheat (2604) > Fruit (1560) Total trade value if all is turned into Ale: Honey (4800) > Wheat (4166) = Fruit (4160) Profit ratio for buying and turning into Ale: Fruit (1.6) > Wheat (0.6) > Honey (0.5)

(Fruit production numbers above are half of what you'd get from a full orchard, since that's the average you'll be getting in vanilla orchards with trees dying and being re-planted.)

You can buy honey or otherwise subscribe to another mod that makes honey, but this building does not have a way to produce honey by managing bee hives.

You're welcome, and sorry about the REALLY long descriptions. I wanted to cram as much info as possible in there, while the mod was fresh in my mind :)

Thank you for all these cool mods - I was about to ask some placement questions, but I see now that I just needed to finish reading the page a second time.
