Era - 1930s - Boxing - Middleweight

Thought to be the best Light Heavyweight ever by the great trainer Ray Arcel, and fellow Light Heavy legend, Archie Moore and second best by another all time trainer in Eddie Futch, John Henry Lewis was a force to be reckoned with. Combining superb speed and a granite chin with a refined outside style and brutal body punching and able to carry his power up against Heavyweights, Lewis was a terrible conundrum for many foes. A great, great nephew of American boxing pioneer, Tom Molineaux, Lewis was the first black American boxer to win the Light Heavyweight championship.

Born in Los Angeles in 1914, Lewis was merely five years old when he started competing in boxing exhibitions. By 14, he became a professional, and was already a fearsome threat by 1931, winning an Arizona regional Middleweight title and defeating future Heavyweight champ, James J. Braddock in the following year.

By 1935, Lewis had set himself up for a shot at the Light Heavyweight title, defeating Bob Olin in a heated contest. He would lose a non-title bout during his reign to "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom, but would beat the tricky technician later on, along with the likes of Tiger Jack Fox, Al Ettore and Johnny Risko, even beating the power punching heavyweight, "Violent" Elmer Ray in 1938.

A fight for the Heavyweight title against the great Joe Louis would follow, with Louis giving his friend the title shot on account of his fast declining eyesight, looking to give Lewis a big payday. Lewis would lose the fight by knockout, the first KO loss of his career as a result.
